Two-colour photocurrent detection technique for coherent control of a single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot
Resumo:
We present a two-colour photocurrent detection method for coherent control of a single InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot. A pulse shaping technique provides a high degree of control over picosecond optical pulses. Rabi rotations on the exciton to biexciton transition are presented, and fine structure beating is detected via time-resolved measurements. (c) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Time-resolved X-ray absorption-fine structure (Quick-XAFS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopies were combined for monitoring simultaneously the time evolution of Zn-based species and ZnO quantum dot (Qdot) formation and growth during the sol-gel synthesis from zinc oxy-acetate precursor solution. The time evolution of the nanostructural features of colloidal suspension was independently monitored in situ by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). In both cases, the monitoring was initialized just after the addition of NaOH solution (B = [OH]/[Zn] = 0.5) to the precursor solution at 40 degrees C. Combined time-resolved Quick-XAFS and UV-Vis data showed that the formation of ZnO colloids from the zinc oxy-acetate consumption achieves a quasi-steady-state chemical equilibrium in less than 200s. Afterwards, the comparison of the ZnO Qdots size and Guinier gyration radius evidences a limited aggregation process coupled to the Qdots growth. The analysis of the experimental results demonstrates that the nanocrystal coalescence and Ostwald ripening control the kinetics of the Qdot growth.

Driven by the challenges involved in the development of new advanced materials with unusual drug delivery profiles capable of improving the therapeutic and toxicological properties of existing cancer chemotherapy, the one-pot sol-gel synthesis of flexible, transparent and insoluble urea-cross-linked polyether-siloxane hybrids has been recently developed. In this one-pot synthesis, the strong interaction between the antitumor cisplatin (CisPt) molecules and the ureasil-poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) hybrid matrix gives rise to the incorporation and release of an unknown CisPt-derived species, hindering the quantitative determination of the drug release pattern from the conventional UV-Vis absorption technique. In this article, we report the use of an original synchrotron radiation calibration method based on the combination of XAS and UV-Vis for the quantitative determination of the amount of Pt-based molecules released in water. Thanks to the combination of UV-Vis, XAS and Raman techniques, we demonstrated that both the CisPt molecules and the CisPt-derived species are loaded into an ureasil-PPO/ureasil-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) hybrid blend matrix. The experimentally determined molar extinction coefficient of the CisPt-derived species loaded into ureasil-PPO hybrid matrix enabled the simultaneous time-resolved monitoring of each Pt species released from this hybrid blend matrix.

Gadolinium oxysulfide powders doped with different Tb3+ concentrations were prepared from sulfur vaporization on rare earths' basic carbonate precursors. Single-phase Gd2O2S samples were obtained, with Tb3+ doping up to 9 at%. The study of the excitation mechanisms revealed that the Tb3+ emission might occur after the direct Tb3+ excitation either by energy transfer from Gd3+ or from the phosphor host. The characteristic terbium emission lines were observed, resulting from the radiative decay from D-5(3) or D-5(4), to F-7(j) levels. The cross-relaxation phenomenon was observed and its effects on the materials emission color were discussed based on the CIE diagram. By using time-resolved spectroscopy, D-5(3) -> F-7(J) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J) transitions were separated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The primary excited state absorption processes relating to the (5)I(6) -> (5)I(7) 3 mu m laser transition in singly Ho(3+)-doped fluoride glass have been investigated in detail using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Selective laser excitation of the (5)I(6) and (5)I(7) energy levels established the occurrence of two excited state absorption transitions from these energy levels that compete with previously described energy transfer upconversion processes. The (5)I(7) -> (5)I(4) excited state absorption transition has peak cross sections at 1216 nm (sigma(esa)=2.8x10(-21) cm(2)), 1174 nm (sigma(esa)=1x10(-21) cm(2)), and 1134 nm (sigma(esa)=7.4x10(-22) cm(2)) which have a strong overlap with the (5)I(8) -> (5)I(6) ground state absorption. on the other hand, it was established that the excited state absorption transition (5)I(6) -> (5)S(2) had a weak overlap with ground state absorption. Using numerical solution of the rate equations, we show that Ho(3+)-doped fluoride fiber lasers employing pumping at 1100 nm rely on excited state absorption from the lowest excited state of Ho(3+) to maintain a population inversion and that energy transfer upconversion processes compete detrimentally with the excited state absorption processes in concentrated Ho(3+)-doped fluoride glass. The coarsening of the nanoporous structure developed in undoped and 3% Sb-doped SnO2 sol-gel dip-coated films deposited on a mica substrate was studied by time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) during in situ isothermal treatments at 450 and 650 degrees C. The time dependence of the structure function derived from the experimental SAXS data is in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the statistical theory of dynamical scaling, thus suggesting that the coarsening process in the studied nanoporous structures exhibits dynamical self-similar properties. The kinetic exponents of the power time dependence of the characteristic scaling length of undoped SnO2 and 3% Sb-doped SnO2 films are similar (alpha approximate to 0.09), this value being invariant with respect to the firing temperature. In the case of undoped SnO2 films, another kinetic exponent, alpha('), corresponding to the maximum of the structure function was determined to be approximately equal to three times the value of the exponent alpha, as expected for the random tridimensional coarsening process in the dynamical scaling regime. Instead, for 3% Sb-doped SnO2 films fired at 650 degrees C, we have determined that alpha(')approximate to 2 alpha, thus suggesting a bidimensional coarsening of the porous structure. The analyses of the dynamical scaling functions and their asymptotic behavior at high q (q being the modulus of the scattering vector) provided additional evidence for the two-dimensional features of the pore structure of 3% Sb-doped SnO2 films. The presented experimental results support the hypotheses of the validity of the dynamic scaling concept to describe the coarsening process in anisotropic nanoporous systems.

We used dynamic light scattering (DLS), a steady-state fluorescence, time resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ), tensiometry, conductimetry, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) to investigate the self-assembly of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium sulfate (CTAS) in aqueous solution, which has SO42- as divalent counterion. We obtained the critical micelled concentration (cmc), aggregation number (N-agg), area per monomer (a(0)), hydrodynamic radius (R-H), and degree of counterion dissociation (alpha) of CTAS micelles in the absence and presence of up to 1 M Na2SO4 and at temperatures of 25 and 40 degrees C. Between 0.01 and 0.3 M salt the hydrodynamic radius of CTAS micelle R-H approximate to 16 angstrom is roughly independent on Na2SO4 concentration; below and above this concentration range R-H increases steeply with the salt concentration, indicating micelle structure transition, from spherical to rod-like structures. R-H increases only slightly as temperature increases from 25 to 40 degrees C, and the cmc decreases initially very steeply with Na2SO4 concentration up to about 10 mM, and thereafter it is constant. The area per surfactant at the water/air interface, a(0), initially increases steeply with Na2SO4 concentration, and then decrases above ca. 10 mM. Conductimetry gives alpha = 0.18 for the degree of counterion dissociation, and N-agg obtained by fluorescence methods increases with surfactant concentration but it is roughly independent of up to 80 mM salt. The ITC data yield cmc of 0.22 mM in water, and the calculated enthalpy change of micelle formation, Delta H-mic = 3.8 kJ mol(-1), Gibbs free energy of micellization of surfactant molecules, Delta G(mic) = -38.0 kJ mol(-1) and entropy T Delta S-mic = 41.7 kJ mol(-1) indicate that the formation of CTAS micelles is entropy-driven. Modifications of glass surfaces were studied after exposure of samples to an atmosphere resulting from the decomposition of molten KNO3. The diffusion coefficient of K+ ions migrating into the surfaces of float glass and synthesized glasses doped with up to 5 wt% SnO2 was calculated by the Boltzmann-Matano technique. The Vickers hardness and the refractive index increase with exposure time. Infrared spectra show that the migration of K+ is responsible for an increase in the number of non-bridging oxygens in the exposed samples. The spectra of the synthesized glasses present evidences that their surfaces undergo crystallization during the exposure. All results lead to the conclusion that the presence of tin in the glasses hinders the diffusion of K+ ions, thus affecting the Vickers hardness, the refractive index and the infrared spectra. It is shown that the exposure method can be used as an alternative process to promote the K+ migration into glass surfaces. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultrafast photoinduced absorption by IRAV modes is used to detect charged solitons in oriented polyacetylene. We find that soliton pairs are photogenerated within our time resolution of similar to250 fs with similar to100% quantum efficiency (phi(ch)). The excitation spectrum of phi(ch) shows an onset at 1.0 eV, with a weak photon energy dependence up to 4.7 eV. These results agree with the ultrafast soliton formation predicted by Su and Schrieffer and with the SSH threshold of 2E(g)/pi for soliton pair production.

We report here on the application of a compact ultraviolet spectrometer to measurement of NO2 emissions from sugar cane field burns in São Paulo, Brazil, the time-resolved NO2 emission from a 10 ha plot peaked at about 240 g (NO2) s(-1), and amounted to a total yield of approximately 50 kg of N, or about 0.5 g (N) m(-2). Emission of N as NOx (i.e., NO + NO2) was estimated at 2.5 g (N) in 2, equivalent to 30% of applied fertilizer nitrogen. The corresponding annual emission of NOx nitrogen from São Paulo State sugar cane burning was >45 Gg N. In contrast to mechanized harvesting, which does not require prior burning of the crop, manual harvesting with burning acts to recycle nitrogen into surface soils and ecosystems.
