This work describes an efficient, fast, and reliable analytical methodology for mercury determination in urine samples using stripping chronopotentiometry at gold film electrodes. The samples were sonicated in the presence of concentrated HCl and H2O2 for 15 min in order to disrupt the organic ligands and release the mercury. Thirty samples can be treated over the optimized region of the ultrasonic bath. This sample preparation was enough to allow the accurate stripping chronopotentiometric determination of mercury in the treated samples. No background currents and no passivation of the gold film electrode due to the sample matrix were verified. The samples were also analyzed by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS) and good agreement between the results was verified. The analysis of NIST SRM 2670 (Toxic Metals in Freeze-Dried Urine) also validated the proposed electroanalytical method. Finally, this method was applied for mercury evaluation in urine of workers exposed to hospital waste incinerators. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermogravimetry (TG), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and other analytical techniques were used to study the reactions of mercury with Pt-30% Ir alloy. The results allowed to suggest that an electrodeposited mercury film interacts with the substrate and when subjected to heat or electrochemical removal at least four mass loss steps or five peaks appeared during the mercury desorption process. The first two steps were attributed to Hg(0) removal probably from the bulk and from the adsorbed monolayer which wets the electrode surface. These two processes are responsible for peaks D and F in the cyclic voltammograms. The last two peaks (G, H) in CV were ascribed to the intermetallic compound decomposition. In TG curves, the last two steps were attributed to the PtHg4 (third step), and PtHg2 decomposition followed by Hg removal from the subsurface. The PtHg2 was formed by an eutectoide reaction: PtHg -> PtHg2+Hg(Pt-Ir). The Hg diffused to the subsurface was not detectable by cyclic voltammetry.

At accumulation potentials close to +0.1 V at a hanging mercury drop electrode, ceftazidime is accumulated at pH 9.5, probably in a hydrolysed or otherwise chemically altered form, in an anodic process to give an adsorbed mercury salt. The accumulation of this mercury salt allows the indirect cathodic-stripping voltammetric determination of ceftazidime using the reduction peak of the mercury salt at -0.70 V. The high sensitivity of the method coupled with high sample dilution allows ceftazidime to be determined in milk samples at the 28 mu g ml(-1) level without prior separation. In order to determine lower levels of ceftazidime in milk (ca. 10 ng ml(-1)) a separation process would be required. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The feasibility of the photobleaching of a textile azo dye, reactive orange 16 (C.I. 17757), in aqueous solution using titanium dioxide thin-film electrodes prepared by the sol-gel method was investigated. The best conditions for maximum photoelectrocatalytic degradation were found to be pH > 10 for Na2SO4 medium and pH < 6 for NaCl. In both situations, an applied potential of +1.0 V and low dye concentration are recommended, when 100% of color removal is obtained after 20 min of photoelectrocatalysis. The effects of side reaction pathway on the degradation rate of dye in sulfate and chloride medium were presented and the best performance are optimized to situations closed to that verified in the textile effluent. The influence of variables as applied potential, pH, supporting electrolyte and dye concentration on the kinetics of photoelectrochemical degradation also were investigated. Oxalic acid is identified by HPLC and UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods as the main degradation product generated after 180 min of photoelectrocatalysis of 4 x 10(-5) mol l(-1) dye in sodium sulphate pH 12 and NaCl pH 4.0 and a maximum reduction of 56 and 62% TOC was obtained, respectively. Mercury thin films prepared by electrochemical deposition on Pt-Ir alloy and after partial removing of mercury at different temperatures were studied by means of an interferometric surface mapping microscope and by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy. Mercury film samples having mercury partially removed by anodic stripping at a potential more positive than the corresponding peak in the voltammogram were also studied using the same techniques. For blank samples the surface topographic studies showed well defined grain boundaries. Mercury film samples when heated up to different temperatures showed as material is removed and that the surface roughness decreases as the temperature increases. For samples heated up to 800 degrees C the surface roughness is approximately the same that for the blank. A model for the interphase of volumetric mercury electrodeposited on a Pt-Ir alloy has been proposed using samples both electrochemically and thermally removed of their Hg coatings. The model includes a layered three-region structure, containing at least two Pt-Hg intermetallics: PtHg4 and PtHg2. A substrate modified region, iridium rich, has also been detected. A mercury-free electrode chemically modified with carbon paste containing dimethylglyoxime was used for determination of nickel in fuel ethanol. The instrumental parameters and composition of the modified paste were optimized. The analytical curve for nickel determination from 5.0 x 10(-9) to 5.0 x10(-7) mol(-1) was obtained using 25 min of accumulation time. The detection limit and amperometric sensitivity obtained for this method were 2.7 x 10 mol(-1) and 5.2 x 10(8) mu A mol(-1) L, respectively. The values for nickel concentration in four commercial samples of fuel ethanol were obtained in the range of 1.1 x 10(-8) to 6.9 x 10(-8) mol(-1). A comparison to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was performed for nickel determination in commercial samples of ethanol.

Thermogravimetry, cyclic voltammetry and other analytical techniques were used to study the reactions of mercury with pure iridium. The results allowed to suggest when subjected to heat or anodic stripping voltammetry an electrodeposited mercury film reacts with Ir substrate and at least three mass loss steps and three peaks appear in the mercury desorption process. The first two were attributed to Hg(0) species removal like a mercury bulk and a mercury monolayer. The last can be ascribed to the mercury removal from a solid solution with iridium.

Degradation of reactive dye Remazol Brilliant Orange 3R (RBO) has been performed using photoeletrocatalysis. A biased potential is applied across a titanium dioxide thin-film photoelectrode illuminated by UV light. It is suggested that charges photogenerated at the electrode surface give rise to chlorine generation and powerful oxidants (OH) that causes the dye solution to decolorize. Rate constants calculated from color decay versus time reveal a first-order reaction up to 5.0×10-5 mol l-1 in dye concentration. The best experimental conditions were found to be pH 6.0 and 1.0 mol l-1 NaCl when the photoelectrode was biased at +1V (versus SCE). Almost complete mineralization of the dye content (70% TOC reduction) was achieved in a 3-h period using these conditions. Effects of other electrolytes, dye concentration and applied potentials also have been investigated and are discussed. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The production of chlorine and hypochlorite is of great economical and technological interest due to their large-scale use in many kinds of commercial applications. Yet, the current processes are not without problems such as inevitable side reactions and the high cost of production. This work reports the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of chloride ions to free chlorine as it has been investigated by using titanium dioxide (TiO2) and several metal-doped titanium dioxide (M-TiO2) material electrodes. An average concentration of 800 mg L-1 of free chlorine was obtained in an open-air reactor using a TiO2 thin-film electrode biased at +1.0 V (SCE) and illuminated by UV light. The M-doped electrodes have performed poorly compared with the pure TiO2 counterpart. Test solutions containing 0.05 mol L-1 NaCl pH 2.0-4.0 were found to be the best conditions for fast production of free chlorine. A complete investigation of all parameters that influence the global process of chlorine production by the photoelectrocatalytic method such as applied potential, concentration of NaCl, pH solution, and time is presented in detail. In addition, photocurrent vs potential curves and the reaction order are also discussed.

The production of chlorine was investigated in the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of a chloride-containing solution using a TiO(2) thin-film electrode biased at current density from 5 to 50 mA cm(-2) and illuminated by UV light. Such parameters as chloride concentrations from 0.001 to 0.10 mol L(-1), pH 2-12, and interfering salts were varied in this study in order to determine their effect on this oxidation process. At an optimum condition this photoelectrocatalytic method can produce active chlorine at levels compatible to water disinfections processes using a chloride concentration higher than 0.010 mol L(-1) at a pH of 4 and a current density of 30 mA cm(-2). The method was successfully applied to treat surface water collected from a Brazilian river. After 150 min of photoelectrocatalytic oxidation, we obtained a 90% reduction in total organic carbon removal, a 100% removal of turbidity, a 93% decrease in colour and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of around 96% (N=3). The proposed technology based on photoelectrocatalytic oxidation was also tested in treating 250 mL of a solution containing 0.05 mol L(-1) NaCl and 50 mu g L(-1) of Microcystin aeruginosa. The bacteria is completely removed after 5 min of photoelectrocatalysis following an initial rate constant removal of -0.260 min(-1), suggesting that the present method could be considered as a promising alternative to chlorine-based disinfections.
