This paper proposes a simple methodology for mercury quantification in natural water by stripping chronopotentiometry at constant current, using gold (film) electrodes constructed from recordable CDs in stationary cell. The proposed method allows the direct measurement of labile mercury in natural waters. To quantify total mercury, a robust and low cost UV irradiation system was developed for the degradation of organic constituents of water. The proposed system presents such advantages as excellent sensitivity, low cost, versatility, and smaller dimensions (portability for on-field applications) when compared with other techniques (ICP, GFAAS, fluorimetry) traditionally utilized for mercury quantification. A large linear region of responses was observed, situated over the range 0.02 - 200 μ g L-1. Various experimental parameters were optimized and the system allowed quantifications in natural samples, with detection limit of 8 ng L-1 and excellent reproducibility (RSD of 1.4% for 48 repetitive measurements using a 10 μ g L-1 mercury solution). Different metal ions were evaluated, including copper, as possible interferences on stripping mercury signals. Applications of the new method were demonstrated for the analysis of certified and groundwater samples spiked with a known amount of mercury and for the quantification of methylmercury in synthetic oceanic water, originally utilized for fishes contamination experiment.

Degradation of reactive dye Remazol Brilliant Orange 3R (RBO) has been performed using photoeletrocatalysis. A biased potential is applied across a titanium dioxide thin-film photoelectrode illuminated by UV light. It is suggested that charges photogenerated at the electrode surface give rise to chlorine generation and powerful oxidants (OH) that causes the dye solution to decolorize. Rate constants calculated from color decay versus time reveal a first-order reaction up to 5.0×10-5 mol l-1 in dye concentration. The best experimental conditions were found to be pH 6.0 and 1.0 mol l-1 NaCl when the photoelectrode was biased at +1V (versus SCE). Almost complete mineralization of the dye content (70% TOC reduction) was achieved in a 3-h period using these conditions. Effects of other electrolytes, dye concentration and applied potentials also have been investigated and are discussed. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The production of chlorine and hypochlorite is of great economical and technological interest due to their large-scale use in many kinds of commercial applications. Yet, the current processes are not without problems such as inevitable side reactions and the high cost of production. This work reports the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of chloride ions to free chlorine as it has been investigated by using titanium dioxide (TiO2) and several metal-doped titanium dioxide (M-TiO2) material electrodes. An average concentration of 800 mg L-1 of free chlorine was obtained in an open-air reactor using a TiO2 thin-film electrode biased at +1.0 V (SCE) and illuminated by UV light. The M-doped electrodes have performed poorly compared with the pure TiO2 counterpart. Test solutions containing 0.05 mol L-1 NaCl pH 2.0-4.0 were found to be the best conditions for fast production of free chlorine. A complete investigation of all parameters that influence the global process of chlorine production by the photoelectrocatalytic method such as applied potential, concentration of NaCl, pH solution, and time is presented in detail. In addition, photocurrent vs potential curves and the reaction order are also discussed.

The production of chlorine was investigated in the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of a chloride-containing solution using a TiO(2) thin-film electrode biased at current density from 5 to 50 mA cm(-2) and illuminated by UV light. Such parameters as chloride concentrations from 0.001 to 0.10 mol L(-1), pH 2-12, and interfering salts were varied in this study in order to determine their effect on this oxidation process. At an optimum condition this photoelectrocatalytic method can produce active chlorine at levels compatible to water disinfections processes using a chloride concentration higher than 0.010 mol L(-1) at a pH of 4 and a current density of 30 mA cm(-2). The method was successfully applied to treat surface water collected from a Brazilian river. After 150 min of photoelectrocatalytic oxidation, we obtained a 90% reduction in total organic carbon removal, a 100% removal of turbidity, a 93% decrease in colour and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of around 96% (N=3). The proposed technology based on photoelectrocatalytic oxidation was also tested in treating 250 mL of a solution containing 0.05 mol L(-1) NaCl and 50 mu g L(-1) of Microcystin aeruginosa. The bacteria is completely removed after 5 min of photoelectrocatalysis following an initial rate constant removal of -0.260 min(-1), suggesting that the present method could be considered as a promising alternative to chlorine-based disinfections. In this work we demonstrate the use of holographic lithography for generation of large area plasmonic periodic structures. Submicrometric array of holes, with different periods and thickness, were recorded in gold films, in areas of about 1 cm2, with homogeneity similar to that of samples recorded by Focused Ion Beam. In order to check the plasmonic properties, we measured the transmission spectra of the samples. The spectra exhibit the typical surface plasmon resonances (SPR) in the infrared whose position and width present the expected behavior with the period of the array and film thickness. The shift of the peak position with the permittivity of the surrounding medium demonstrates the feasebility of the sample as large area sensors. © 2009 SPIE.

Chitosan is alternated with sulfonated polystyrene (PSS) to build layer-by-layer (LBL) films that are used as sensing units in an electronic tongue. Using impedance spectroscopy as the principle method of detection, an array using chitosan/PSS LBL film and a bare gold electrode as the sensing units was capable of distinguishing the basic tastes - salty, sweet, bitter, and sour - to a concentration below the human threshold. The suitability of chitosan as a sensing material was confirmed by using this sensor to distinguish red wines according to their vintage, vineyard, and brands.

The electrochemical preparation described herein involved the electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfite on a platinum electrode modified with nanostructured copper salen (salen=N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato)) polymer films. The complex was prepared and electropolymerized at a platinum electrode in a 0.1 mol L-1 solution of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in acetonitrile by cyclic voltammetry between 0 and 1.4V vs. SCE. After cycling the modified electrode in a 0.50 mol L-1 KCI solution, the estimated surface concentration was found to be equal to 2.2 x 10(-9) Mol cm(-2). This is a typical behavior of an electrode surface immobilized with a redox couple that can usually be considered as a reversible single-electron reduction/oxidation of the copper(II)/copper(III) couple. The potential peaks of the modified electrode in the electrolyte solution (aqueous) containing the different anions increase with the decrease of the ionic radius, demonstrating that the counter-ions influence the voltammetric behavior of the sensor. The potential peak was found to be linearly dependent upon the ratio [ionic charge]/[ionic radius]. The oxidation of the sulfite anion was performed at the platinum electrode at +0.9V vs. SCE. However, a significant decrease in the overpotential (+0.45V) was obtained while using the sensor, which minimized the effect of oxidizable interferences. A plot of the anodic current vs. the sulfite concentration for chronoamperometry (potential fixed = +0.45V) at the sensor was linear in the 4.0 x 10(-6) to 6.9 x 10(-5) mol L-1 concentration range and the concentration limit was 1.2 x 10(-6) mol L-1. The reaction order with respect to sulfite was determined by the slope of the logarithm of the current vs. the logarithm of the sulfite concentration. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An amperometric oxygen sensor based on a polymeric nickel-salen (salen = N,N'-ethylene bis(salicylideneiminato)) film coated platinum electrode was developed. The sensor was constructed by electropolymerization of nickel-salen complex at platinum electrode in acetonitrile/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate by cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric behavior of the sensor was investigated in 0.5 mol L-1 KCl solution in the absence and presence of molecular oxygen. Thus, with the addition of oxygen to the solution, the increase of cathodic peak current (at -0.25 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)) of the modified electrode was observed. This result shows that the nickel-salen film on electrode surface promotes the reduction of oxygen. The reaction can be brought about electrochemically, where the nickel(II) complex is first reduced to a nickel(I) complex at the electrode surface. The nickel(I) complex then undergoes a catalytic oxidation by the molecular oxygen in solution back to the nickel(II) complex, which can then be electrochemically re-reduced to produce an enhancement of the cathodic current. The Tafel plot analyses have been used to elucidate the kinetics and mechanism of the oxygen reduction. A plot of the cathodic current vs. the dissolved oxygen concentration for chronoamperometry (fixed potential = -0.25 V vs. SCE) at the sensor was linear in the 3.95-9.20 mg L-1 concentration range and the concentration limit was 0.17 mg L-1 O-2. The proposed electrode is useful for the quality control and routine analysis of dissolved oxygen in commercial samples and environmental water. The results obtained for the levels of dissolved oxygen are in agreement with the results obtained with a commercial O-2 sensor. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
