This paper aims at presenting an Interactive School Atlas prototype which was developed for cartography and environmental education. The methodology was based on the theoretical study about child mental development of Piaget theory, in order to elaborate strategies that allow the student a better comprehension about the spatial information understanding. It was defined as study case of sixth grade students, because they belong to the Formal Operation stage, in which the children reach the needed mental operations for understanding cartographic key concepts. This Atlas was developed in two stages: cartographic design and Atlas production. The Atlas implementation was developed seeking the use of Multimedia Cartography and animation resources that may attract students and teachers, instigating them to explore the tools and strategies to lead users to a correct interpretation of map contents. The Atlas was implemented by using the Macromedia Flash and Visual Basic softwares and the MapObjects library. Though the map has bot been evaluated yet, one should point out that it was designed according to the theoretical and methodological knowledge of the cognitive development and its relationship to cartographic conceptions, aiming at adapting the product to children cognitive skills.

An ethanolic extract from the stems of Styrax camporum Pohl (Styracaceae), a plant traditionally used for gastrointestinal diseases, was fractionated and subjected to flash chromatography and afforded two benzofuran lignans, egonol and homoegonol, and one furofuran lignan, (+/-) syringaresinol, which were identified by spectral data interpretation. Their cytotoxic activities against Hep-2 (larynx epidermoid carcinoma), HeLa (human cervix carcinoma) and C6 (rat glioma) cell lines were evaluated using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) assay at several concentrations for 24 h. Activities could be observed for egonol against C6 (IC50 = 3.2 mu g/mL) and Hep-2 (IC50 = 3.6 mu g/mL) cell lines, and for homoegonol against C6 (IC50 = 4.9 mu g/mL) and HeLa (IC50 =- 5.3 mu g/mL) cells.

Non-audio signals have been recorded in the flash ROM memory of a portable MP3 player, in WAV format file, to examine the possibility of using these cheap and small instruments as general-purpose portable data loggers. A 1200-Hz FM carrier modulated by the non-audio signal has replaced the microphone signal, while using the REC operating mode of the MP3 player, which triggers the voice recording function. The signal recovery was carried out by a PLL-based FM demodulator whose input is the FM signal captured in the coil leads of the MP3 player's earphone. Sinusoidal and electrocardiogram signals have been used in the system evaluation. Although the quality of low frequency signals needs improvement, overall the results indicate the viability of the proposal. Suggestions are made for improvements and extensions of the work.

This paper aims to analyze dual-purpose systems focusing the total cost optimization; a superstructure is proposed to present cogeneration systems and desalination technologies alternatives for the synthesis process. The superstructure consists of excluding components, gas turbines or conventional steam generators with excluding alternatives of supplying fuel for each combustion system. Also, backpressure or condensing/extraction steam turbine for supplying process steam could be selected. Finally one desalination unit chosen between electrically-driven or steam-driven reverse osmosis. multi-effect and multistage flash should be included. The analysis herein performed is based on energy and mass conservation equations, as well as the technological limiting equation of equipment. The results for ten different commercial gas turbines revealed that electrically-driven reverse osmosis was always chosen together with both natural gas and gasified biomass gas turbines. This work analyses the waveshapes of continuing currents and parameters of M-components in positive cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes through high-speed GPS synchronized videos. The dataset is composed of only long continuing currents (with duration longer than 40 ms) and was selected from more than 800 flashes recorded in Sao Jose dos Campos (45.864 degrees W, 23.215 degrees S) and Uruguaiana (29.806 degrees W, 57.005 degrees S) in Southeast and South of Brazil, respectively, during 2003 to 2007 summers. The videos are compared with data obtained by the Brazilian Lightning Location System (BrasilDAT) in order to determine the polarity of each flash and select only positive cases. There are only two studies of waveshapes of continuing currents in the literature. One is based on direct current measurements of triggered lightning, in which four different types of waveshapes were observed; and the other is based on measurements of luminosity variations in high-speed videos of CG negative lightning, in which besides the four types above mentioned two additional types were observed. The present work is an extension of the latter, using the same method but now applied to obtain the waveshapes of positive CG lightning. As far as the authors know, this is the first report on M-components in positive continuing currents. We also have used the luminosity-versus-time graphs to observe their occurrence and measure some parameters (duration, elapsed time and time between two successive M-components), whose statistics are presented and compared in detail to the data for negative flashes. We have plotted a histogram of the M-components elapsed time over the total duration of the continuing current for positive flashes, which presented an exponential decay (correlation coefficient: 0.83), similar to what has been observed for negative flashes. The luciferases of the railroad worm Phrixotrix (Coleoptera: Phengodidae) are the only beetle luciferases that naturally produce true red bioluminescence. Previously, we cloned the green- (PxGR) and red-emitting (PxRE) luciferases of railroad worms Phrixotrix viviani and P. hirtus[OLE1]. These luciferases were expressed and purified, and their active-site properties were determined. The red-emitting PxRE luciferase displays flash-like kinetics, whereas PxGR luciferase displays slow-type kinetics. The substrate affinities and catalytic efficiency of PxRE luciferase are also higher than those of PxGR luciferase. Fluorescence studies with 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid and 6-p-toluidino-2-naphthalene sulfonic acid showed that the PxRE luciferase luciferin-binding site is more polar than that of PxGR luciferase, and it is sensitive to guanidine. Alutagenesis and modelling studies suggest that several invariant residues in the putative luciferin-binding site of PxRE luciferase cannot interact with excited oxyluciferin. These results suggest that one portion of the luciferin-binding site of the red-emitting luciferase is tighter than that of PxGR luciferase, whereas the other portion could be more open and polar.

This paper considers the role of automatic estimation of crowd density and its importance for the automatic monitoring of areas where crowds are expected to be present. A new technique is proposed which is able to estimate densities ranging from very low to very high concentration of people, which is a difficult problem because in a crowd only parts of people's body appear. The new technique is based on the differences of texture patterns of the images of crowds. Images of low density crowds tend to present coarse textures, while images of dense crowds tend to present fine textures. The image pixels are classified in different texture classes and statistics of such classes are used to estimate the number of people. The texture classification and the estimation of people density are carried out by means of self organising neural networks. Results obtained respectively to the estimation of the number of people in a specific area of Liverpool Street Railway Station in London (UK) are presented. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. O objetivo deste trabalho foi introduzir a técnica de microfiltração tangencial (MFT) na produção de suco de laranja. O suco microfiltrado (SMFT) foi comparado química e sensorialmente com um suco pasteurizado (testemunha). Utilizou-se um piloto de MFT munido de quatro membranas (0,1, 0,2, 0,8 e 1,4mm) cerâmicas monotubulares dispostas em série, cada uma delas com superfície de 0,005m². Suco de laranja comercial flash pasteurizado foi usado como produto inicial. O trabalho experimental foi dividido em três fases: a) caracterização do piloto de MFT; b) otimização das condições operacionais; c) produção do SMFT. Na fase de otimização, a membrana de 0,8mm apresentou os melhores fluxos de permeado, seguidas pelas de 1,4, 0,1 e 0,2mm. Para garantir a esterilidade do permeado, a membrana de 0,1mm foi escolhida para a terceira fase do trabalho. Na produção do SMFT, o suco de laranja foi peneirado para separar uma parte de sua polpa, sendo em seguida microfiltrado. Depois, a polpa foi misturada ao retentato e a mistura pasteurizada. O SMFT foi obtido adicionando a mistura pasteurizada ao permeado. O SMFT apresentou teor de sólidos solúveis (°Brix), polpa, pH e acidez titulável semelhante ao suco inicial pasteurizado (testemunha); embora, tenha perdido maior quantidade (28%) de vitamina C. de acordo com os provadores do painel, o suco testemunha apresentou melhores características sensoriais em relação ao SMFT, por apresentar maior intensidade de odor e sabor frutoso.

A Eletroretinografia é técnica que acessa objetivamente a função da retina, sendo útil como meio diagnóstico auxiliar para várias oftalmopatias. Este artigo traz informações referentes às indicações, aos componentes e medidas do eletroretinograma (ERG) e à técnica do ERG flash ilustrada pelo protocolo Clássico/Standard, utilizada na Unidade de Oftalmologia do Hospital Veterinário “Governador Laudo Natel” da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias (FCAV) - Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) - Campus de Jaboticabal.

We present morphological and natural history data on Epipedobates pictus and three additional taxa currently regarded as synonyms of the former: Epipedobates braccatus, E. flavopictus, and E. hahneli. Topotypes of the four species were examined. Morphological data on tadpoles and adults, in addition to distribution patterns and vocalizations, indicate that the four taxa represent distinct species. Two groups are evident within them: (1) the slender-bodied, Amazonian E. hahneli with small flash marks on the thighs and a low-finned tadpole, and (2) the robust bodied, almost extra-Amazonian E. braccatus, E. flavopictus, and E. pictus with large flash marks on the thighs and tadpoles with fins of moderate height.

This work reports the changes in the optical properties produced by annealing of amorphous GaAs at temperatures smaller than or just sufficient to produce crystallization of the material. The films were grown by the flash evaporation technique on glass substrates at room temperature. Optical and structural changes of our samples were monitored through photothermal deflection spectroscopy, optical transmittance and reflectance and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structural results from XRD detected no crystallization of the films for temperatures up to 240 degreesC. We have observed consistent changes in the optical gap and Urbach energy of the annealed film. The optical gap increases with increasing annealing temperature from 1.17 to 1.32 eV. The Urbach energy decrease from 120 meV (as-grown film) to 105 meV (anneal at 200 degreesC). We propose that these changes are due to a diminution of the tail state defects and/or the relaxation of strained bonds. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
