Trigone ventricular meningiomas surgical approaches

Objective: Report our experience with trigone ventricular meningiomas and review the surgical approaches to the trigone. Method: From 1989 to 2006, six patients with meningiomas of the trigone of the lateral ventricles underwent microsurgical resection. Their clinical features, image, follow up, and surgical approaches were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Five patients presented with large and one with small volume meningioma. Unspecific symptoms occurred in three patients; intracranial hypertension detected in three patients; homonymous hemianopsy in three; and motor deficit present in one patient. Three patients were operated by transparietal transcortical approach, two by middle temporal gyrus approach, and one by parieto-occipital interhemispheric precuneus approach. Total resection was achieved in all patients without additional deficits. Conclusion: Judicious preoperative plan, adequate knowledge of anatomy, and use of correct microsurgical techniques are fundamental in achieving complete resection of trigone meningioma with low morbidity.

Empenamento, níveis hormonais de triiodotironina e tiroxina e temperatura corporal de frangos de corte de diferentes genótipos criados em diferentes condições de temperatura

Estudou-se o empenamento, os níveis hormonais de Triiodotironina (T3) e Tiroxina (T4) e a temperatura corporal de frangos criados em diferentes temperaturas. Foram alojados 180 pintainhos Cobb 500 e 180 pintainhos ISA Label JA57, em temperaturas termoneutra, quente ou fria. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente ao acaso, em modelo fatorial 2 x 3 (2 linhagens e 3 temperaturas) com 8 repetições. Houve um aumento das concentrações de T3, nas aves criadas no frio, e uma redução no calor. Também no calor, os frangos ISA Label apresentaram níveis mais altos de T4. As aves Cobb apresentaram uma redução de T4 no calor ou no frio aos 42 dias e no calor aos 21 dias de idade. Houve menor empenamento aos 42 dias, quando os frangos foram criados em alta temperatura e um menor empenamento das aves ISA Label, quando comparadas aos frangos Cobb. As aves criadas no calor apresentaram maior temperatura corporal. Os frangos Cobb apresentaram um aumento na sua temperatura interna, quando criados em ambiente quente. Já os frangos da linhagem ISA Label mantiveram sua temperatura interna, independentemente da temperatura ambiente. É possível concluir que a temperatura ambiente afeta o empenamento dos frangos de corte de linhagens de rápido ganho de peso, que também apresentaram menor tolerância ao calor, demonstrada através de uma maior temperatura corporal e temperatura interna.

A foal was admitted with neurological signs characterized by seizures during exercise. A maintenance protocol with anticonvulsants was not possible to establish therefore all the drugs had aggravated the seizures even with low dosages. Restriction of physical activity was the option, leaving the animal in stall until it had reached the maturity and at this time the neurological signs had stopped.

Influences of the insertion method in glass ionomer cement porosity

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of porosities inside the glass ionomer cement (GIC) after different techniques of material insertion. MATERIAL and METHOD: Specimens were prepared with high-viscosity GIC Ketac Molar Easymix and divided into three groups according to the insertion method: spatula (PI), Centrix injector (CI), and low-cost syringe (LCS). The specimens were fractured and observed with scanning electronic microscopy to quantitatively evaluate porosity inside the material using Image J Software. RESULTS: Statistical analysis, ANOVA application, and Tukey test to significance level of 5%, revealed that there was no statistical difference between the groups. CONCLUSION: Although the use of LCS has not decreased the porosity of the material, this insertion method is easy, accessible, and low cost, which makes it a viable alternative of use in the ART technique and in others bucal health programs. Atomic radiative transitions in thermo field dynamics

In this work we rederive the Lamb-Retherford energy shift for an atomic electron in the presence of a thermal radiation. Using the Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (DDC) formalism, where physical observables are expressed as convolutions of suitable statistical functions, we construct the electromagnetic field propagator of thermo field dynamics in the Coulomb gauge in order to investigate finite temperature effects on the atomic energy levels. In the same context, we also analyze the problem of the ground state stability.

CP and T violation in neutrino oscillations

In this short lecture, I discuss some basic phenomenological aspects of CP and T violation in neutrino oscillation. Using CP/T trajectory diagrams in the bi-probability space, I try to sketch out some essential features of the interplay between the effect of CP/T violating phase and that of the matter in neutrino oscillation.

Finite-volume form factors in semi-classical approximation

A semi-classical approach is used to obtain Lorentz covariant expressions for the form factors between the kink states of a quantum field theory with degenerate vacua. Implemented on a cylinder geometry it provides an estimate of the spectral representation of correlation functions in a finite volume. Illustrative examples of the applicability of the method are provided by the sine-Gordon and the broken phi(4) theories in 1 + 1 dimensions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Search for W ' boson production in the W ' -> t(b)over-bar decay channel

We present a search for the production of a new heavy gauge boson W' that decays to a top quark and a bottom quark. We have analyzed 230 pb(-1) of data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. No significant excess of events above the standard model expectation is found in any region of the final state invariant mass distribution. We set upper limits on the production cross section of W' bosons times branching ratio to top quarks at the 95% confidence level for several different W, boson masses. We exclude masses between 200 and 610 GeV for a W' boson with standard-model-like couplings, between 200 and 630 GeV for a W, boson with right-handed couplings that is allowed to decay to both leptons and quarks, and between 200 and 670 GeV for a W' boson with right-handed couplings that is only allowed to decay to quarks. The plethysm technique applied to the classification of nuclear states

A short summary of the theory of symmetric group and symmetric functions needed to follow the theory of Schur functions and plethysms is presented. One then defines plethysm, gives its properties and presents a procedure for its calculation. Finally, some aplications in atomic physics and nuclear structure are given.

Nitrogênio em cobertura e molibdênio via foliar no feijoeiro irrigado cultivado em solo de cerrado

O nitrogênio é o nutriente exigido em maior quantidade pelo feijoeiro e, mesmo quando suprida adequadamente desse nutriente, a planta de feijão pode ter sua produtividade limitada pela deficiência de molibdênio, pela participação deste no metabolismo do nitrogênio. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resposta do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cultivar 'BRS Pontal', irrigado, à aplicação de nitrogênio em cobertura e molibdênio via foliar, quando cultivado em Neossolo Quartzarênico, no município de Cassilândia, MS. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, no esquema fatorial 4x2, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 30, 60 e 120 kg ha-1) aplicados em cobertura, utilizando como fonte a ureia, e pela aplicação ou não de molibdênio (80 g ha-1) via foliar, na forma de molibdato de amônio. O índice relativo de clorofila nas folhas do feijoeiro foi aumentado pela aplicação de nitrogênio em cobertura e molibdênio via foliar. A aplicação de nitrogênio em cobertura proporcionou aumento na produtividade de grãos do feijoeiro apenas quando combinado com o fornecimento de molibdênio via foliar. O fornecimento de 80 g ha-1 de molibdênio via foliar aumentou a eficiência de utilização do nitrogênio pelo feijoeiro.

Isolation of fungi from nature in the region of Botucatu, state of São Paulo, Brazil, an endemic area of paracoccidioidomycosis

In an attempt to isolate Paracoccidioides brasiliensis from nature 887 samples of soil from Botucatu, SP, Brazil, were collected cultured in brain heart infusion agar supplemented with dextrose, in potato dextrose agar and in yeast extract starch dextrose agar, all with antibiotics, at 25º and 37ºC. Five thermo-dependent dimorphic fungi morphologically resembling P. brasiliensis were isolated; two from armadillo holes; further studies of the biology, antigenicity and genetic features of the five dimorphic fungi are necessary to clarify their taxonomy and their possible relation to P. brasiliensis. In addition, 98 dematiaceous fungi and 581 different species of Aspergillus spp. were also isolated. Our findings emphasize that armadillos and their environment are associated with thermo-dimorphic fungi and confirm the ubiquity of pathogenic dematiaceous fungi and Aspergillus spp.

Plasma cortisol levels in captive wild felines after chemical restraint

Eight Panthera onca (Po), 13 Felis concolor (Fc), 7 Felis yagouaroundi (Fy), 7 Felis tigrina (Ft) and 5 Felis pardalis (Fp) specimens from São Paulo State zoos were used. All animals were restrained with darts containing 10 mg/kg ketamine and 1 mg/kg xylazine. Venous blood samples were collected as soon as possible (within 15-20 min) and serum was frozen until the time for cortisol quantification. Cortisol was determined using a solid phase radioimmunoassay with an intra-assay coefficient of 8.51%. Data were analyzed statistically by the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Dunn's multiple comparisons test, and the one-sample t-test, with the level of significance set at P<0.05. Data are reported as means ± SEM. Cortisol levels differed among the captive felines: Po = 166 ± 33a, Fc = 670 ± 118b, Fy = 480 ± 83b, Ft = 237 ± 42ab, Fp = 97 ± 12a nmol/l (values followed by different superscript letters were significantly different (P<0.001)). Since most of the veterinary procedures on these species involve chemical restraint, these results show the necessity of preventive measures in order to minimize the effect of restraint stress on more susceptible species
