We consider the (2 + 1)-dimensional massive Thirring model as a gauge theory, with one-fermion flavor, in the framework of the causal perturbation theory and address the problem of dynamical mass generation for the gauge boson. In this context we obtain an unambiguous expression for the coefficient of the induced Chern-Simons term.

The behavior of the non-perturbative parts of the isovector-vector and isovector and isosinglet axial-vector correlators at Euclidean momenta is studied in the framework of a covariant chiral quark model with non-local quark-quark interactions. The gauge covariance is ensured with the help of the P-exponents, with the corresponding modification of the quark-current interaction vertices taken into account. The low- and high-momentum behavior of the correlators is compared with the chiral perturbation theory and with the QCD operator product expansion, respectively. The V-A combination of the correlators obtained in the model reproduces quantitatively the ALEPH and OPAL data on hadronic tau decays, transformed into the Euclidean domain via dispersion relations. The predictions for the electromagnetic pi(+/-) - pi(0) mass difference and for the pion electric polarizability are also in agreement with the experimental values. The topological susceptibility of the vacuum is evaluated as a function of the momentum, and its first moment is predicted to be chi'(0) approximate to (50 MeV)(2). In addition, the fulfillment of the Crewther theorem is demonstrated.

We consider pion interactions in an effective field theory of the narrow resonance X(3872), assuming it is a weakly bound molecule of the charm mesons D-0(D) over bar (*0) and D-*0(D) over bar (0). Since the hyperfine splitting of the D-0 and D-*0 is only 7 MeV greater than the neutral pion mass, pions can be produced near threshold and are nonrelativistic. We show that pion exchange can be treated in perturbation theory and calculate the next-to-leading-order correction to the partial decay width Gamma[X -> D-0(D) over bar (0)pi(0)].

It is proven that the pure spinor superstring in an AdS(5) x S-5 background remains conformally invariant at one loop level in the sigma model perturbation theory.

In this work we reexamine quantum electrodynamics of atomic electrons in the Coulomb gauge in the dipole approximation and calculate the shift of atomic energy levels in the context of Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji formalism by considering the variation rates of physical observable. We then analyze the physical interpretation of the ordering of operators in the dipole approximation interaction Hamiltonian in terms of field fluctuations and self-reaction of atomic electrons, discussing the arbitrariness in the statistical functions in second-order bound-state perturbation theory. In a recent paper, we raised a question on the validity of Feynman's prescription of disregarding the Pauli principle in intermediate states of perturbation theory. In the preceding Comment, Cavalcanti correctly pointed out that Feynman's prescription is consistent with the exact solution of the model that we used. This means that the Pauli principle does not necessarily apply to intermediate states. We discuss implications of this puzzling aspect.

We present new theoretical results on the spectrum of the quantum field theory of the double sine-Gordon model. This non-integrable model displays different varieties of kink excitations and bound states thereof. Their mass can be obtained by using a semiclassical expression of the matrix elements of the local fields. In certain regions of the coupling-constants space the semiclassical method provides a picture which is complementary to the one of the form factor perturbation theory, since the two techniques give information about the mass of different types of excitations. In other regions the two methods are comparable, since they describe the same kind of particles. Furthermore, the semiclassical picture is particularly suited to describe the phenomenon of false vacuum decay, and it also accounts in a natural way the presence of resonance states and the occurrence of a phase transition. Regarding the Pauli principle in quantum field theory and in many-body quantum mechanics, Feynman advocated that Pauli's exclusion principle can be completely ignored in intermediate states of perturbation theory. He observed that all virtual processes (of the same order) that violate the Pauli principle cancel out. Feynman accordingly introduced a prescription, which is to disregard the Pauli principle in all intermediate processes. This ingenious trick is of crucial importance in the Feynman diagram technique. We show, however, an example in which Feynman's prescription fails. This casts doubts on the general validity of Feynman's prescription. [S1050-2947(99)04604-1].

Recent progress in the solution of Schwinger-Dyson equations, as well as lattice simulation of pure glue QCD, indicate that the gluon propagator and coupling constant are infrared finite. Such non-perturbative information can be introduced in the QCD perturbative expansion in the scheme named Dynamical Perturbation Theory. We exemplify this procedure with the calculation of some two-body non-leptonic annihilation B meson decays, which show agreement with the experimental data in the case of a gluon propagator characterized by a dynamical gluon mass of 500MeV, compatible with the value found in several processes computed with this method. We give a. preliminary account of the application of this procedure at the loop level in the case of the Bjorken sum rule.

In this paper energy transfer in a dissipative mechanical system is analysed. Such system is composed of a linear and a nonlinear oscillator with a nonlinearizable cubic stiffness. Depending on initial conditions, we find energy transfer either from linear to nonlinear oscillator (energy pumping) or from nonlinear to linear. Such results are valid for two different potentials. However, under resonance and absence of external excitation, if the mass of the nonlinear oscillator is adequately small then the linear oscillator always loses energy. Our approach uses rigorous Regular Perturbation Theory. Besides, we have included the case of two linear oscillators under linear or cubic interactions. Comparisons with the earlier case are made. We study energy localization on the oscillator chain proposed by Peyrard and Bishop to model DNA. We search numerically for conditions with initial energy in a small subgroup of consecutive oscillators of a finite chain and such that the oscillation amplitude is small outside this subgroup on a long time scale. We use a localization criterion based on the information entropy and verify numerically that such localized excitations exist when the nonlinear dynamics of the subgroup oscillates with a frequency inside the reactive band of the linear chain. We predict a mimium value for the Morse parameter (mu>2.25) (the only parameter of our normalized model), in agreement with the numerical calculations (an estimate for the biological value is mu=6.3). For supercritical masses, we use canonical perturbation theory to expand the frequencies of the subgroup and we calculate an energy threshold in agreement with the numerical calculations.
