In this work, we deal with a micro electromechanical system (MEMS), represented by a micro-accelerometer. Through numerical simulations, it was found that for certain parameters, the system has a chaotic behavior. The chaotic behaviors in a fractional order are also studied numerically, by historical time and phase portraits, and the results are validated by the existence of positive maximal Lyapunov exponent. Three control strategies are used for controlling the trajectory of the system: State Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) Control, Optimal Linear Feedback Control, and Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control. The controls proved effective in controlling the trajectory of the system studied and robust in the presence of parametric errors.

BACKGROUND: A dichloromethane-methanol extract of the seeds of Piper tuberculatum Jacq. (Piperaceae) and two isobutyl amides, 4,5-dihydropiperlonguminine (1) and pellitorine (2), which were isolated by chromatographic methods, were assayed for their lethality against the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis F. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).RESULTS: Bioassays were carried out with fourth-instar caterpillars through topical application of test solutions to the dorsal surface of the prothorax, and dose-response correlations were determined. Significant insect mortalities were observed 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment at concentrations of >= 100 mu g insect(-1). The LD(50) and LD(90) values for compound 1 were 92.83 and 176.50 mu g insect(-1), and for compound 2 they were 91.19 and 184.56 mu g insect(-1).CONCLUSION: According to the LD(50) and LD(90) for compounds 1 and 2, it can be inferred that the values reflect an acute lethal response to both compounds, based on interaction(s) of the toxicants with a primary target or series of targets. Thus, the amides were demonstrated to have potential value in the control of the sugarcane borer. (C) 2008 Society of Chemical Industry

The present study was carried out to determine possible panicogenic effects of strychnine administered in subconvulsive doses to rats. Two experiments were conducted to assess two major features of panic in animal models: panic-related flight (through the observation of wild running [WR]) and defensive fights. In the first one, 20 adult male Wistar rats were injected with six different doses of strychnine ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 mg/kg. After 15 min of free observation, the animals were submitted to high-intensity acoustic stimulation and the incidence of WR was recorded. Higher doses of strychnine (above 2.5 mg/kg) easily evoked seizures, but lower doses raised the incidence of WR in a dose-dependent manner. The most effective dose for WR (1.5 mg/kg) was used in the second experiment, in which we investigated the effects of strychnine on sleep-deprivation-induced fights (SDIFs) that have defensive characteristics. For this purpose, 40 subjects were submitted to 5 days of REM-sleep deprivation by the single-platform method and were then assigned into two groups, i.e., strychnine vs. control. After the injections, the animals were observed in social groupings for SDIF recordings over a period of 60 min. The strychnine-treated groups had more SDIF than the control groups (P<.05, Mann-Whitney U test). We conclude that the high level of neural excitability promoted by partial blockade of the glycinergic system can contribute to the manifestation of panic reactions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The midbrain dorsal periaqueductal gray (DPAG) is part of the brain defensive system involved in active defense reactions to threatening stimuli. Corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) is a peptidergic neurotransmitter that has been strongly implicated in the control of both behavioral and endocrine responses to threat and stress. We investigated the effect of the nonspecific CRF receptor agonist, ovine CRF (oCRF), injected into the DPAG of mice, in two predator-stress situations, the mouse defense test battery (MDTB), and the rat exposure test (RET). In the MDTB, oCRF weakly modified defensive behaviors in mice confronted by the predator (rat); e.g. it increased avoidance distance when the rat was approached and escape attempts (jump escapes) in forced contact. In the RET, drug infusion enhanced duration in the chamber while reduced tunnel and surface time, and reduced contact with the screen which divides the subject and the predator. oCRF also reduced both frequency and duration of risk assessment (stretch attend posture: SAP) in the tunnel and tended to increase freezing. These findings suggest that patterns of defensiveness in response to low intensity threat (RET) are more sensitive to intra-DPAG oCRF than those triggered by high intensity threats (MDTB). Our data indicate that CRF systems may be functionally involved in unconditioned defenses to a predator, consonant with a role for DPAG CRF systems in the regulation of emotionality. Over the last decades, increasing water demands have fostered research to obtain high well yields in crystalline terrains where, besides the intrinsic properties of rocks, the groundwater flow depends on several factors. The depth of the wells, the lithotypes, the presence and thickness of sedimentary coverings and weathered layers, the landforms, the geological structures, and the effects of tectonic stresses are among the most investigated factors considered as determinant of well productivity. The influence of these factors on productivity of wells that exploit the Crystalline Aquifer System in the Jundiai-River Catchment, southeastern Brazil, is investigated in this work. The largest region of the studied area is located on the Precambrian Basement, partially covered by sedimentary deposits. The results show that the sedimentary deposits and the weathered layer are important for high well yield, but it also depends on the existence of a net of open fractures, in order to maintain high productivity. The sites that have more possibility of occurrence of such structures are the regional shear and fault zones and other minor structures with NW-SE and E-W directions, which characterize areas subjected to transtensional stress related to the neotectonics.

The stress syndrome includes ample phenomena, characterized by complex neuroendocrinological alterations. Such alterations, in the long run, give rise to important modifications in reply of different organs and tissues to diverse agonists, specially sympathicommentic. These alterations, at least partially, are part of an ''adjustment mechanism'' of the tissues. Thus this possibility of obtaining altered responses in function of stress leads to the need of special care in the prevention and control of stressogenic stimuli in the process of research. Taking cave of preventing stressogenic stimuli, it becomes possible to determine a profile of trustworthy replies, considered as standard From such reply standards, toe can know more clearly what is a ''normal'' response or what is a response ''altered'' by some factor, specially stress.

The effect of pheromones and their chemical analogues in honeybee alarm behaviors was studied in observation boxes. Defensive behaviors, as follows: a) attraction to scent source, b) elevation of wings in 'V', c) abdomen elevation, d) abdomen elevation and pumping and e) first leg pair elevation had been temporarily registered when the following compounds were presented: isoamyl alcohol, octyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, n-butyl acetate, n-octyl acetate, isopentyl acetate, benzyl acetate and 2-heptanone. The results were as follows: 1. the bees elicited some characteristic behaviors when chemical alarm messages were presented, 2. agression (stinging) was not completed with any compound tested, probably because there was not a target (visual stimulus), 3. in all situations the attraction to scent source was low, 4. all the behaviors were elicited in a temporarily different way, 5. the compounds that elicited stronger responses and a greater number of the investigated behaviors were: isopentyl acetate, 2-heptanone, octyl acetate and n-octyl alcohol. In all situations, the first behavior response (and the most intense one) was the elevation and pumping the abdomen. This suggests that the chemical message was promptly recognized and then transmitted to each worker. So, the results obtained in the present work, suggest that chemical alarm messages may be recognized by different mechanisms of neural integration.

A study was conducted on the dynamics of 2D and 3D Bose-Einstein condensates in the case when the scattering length in the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation which contains constant (dc) and time-variable (ac) parts. Using the variational approximation (VA), simulating the GP equation directly, and applying the averaging procedure to the GP equation without the use of the VA, it was demonstrated that the ac component of the nonlinearity makes it possible to maintain the condensate in a stable self-confined state without external traps.

We investigate the formation of compositional modulation and atomic ordering in InGaP films. Such bulk properties - as well as surface morphologies - present a strong dependence on growth parameters, mainly the V/III ratio. Our results indicate the importance of surface diffusion and, particularly, surface reconstruction for these processes. Most importantly from the application point of view, we show that the compositional modulation is not necessarily coupled to the surface instabilities, so that smooth InGaP films with periodic compositional variation could be obtained. This opens a new route for the generation of templates for quantum dot positioning and three-dimensional arrays of nanostructures. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.
