Coherent properties and Rabi oscillations in two-level donor systems, under terahertz excitation, are theoretically investigated. Here we are concerned with donor states in bulk GaAs and GaAs-(Ga,Al)As quantum dots. We study confinement effects, in the presence of an applied magnetic field, on the electronic and on-center donor states in GaAs- (Ga,Al)As dots, as compared to the situation in bulk GaAs, and estimate some of the associated decay rate parameters. Using the optical Bloch equations with damping, we study the time evolution of the Is and 2p(+) states in the presence of an applied magnetic field and of a terahertz laser. We also discuss the role played by the distinct dephasing rates on the photocurrent and calculate the electric dipole transition moment. Results indicate that the Rabi oscillations are more robust as the total dephasing rate diminishes, corresponding to a favorable coherence time.

A review of some articles on thought experiments shows that the use of these tools as resources seems to be very useful in understanding some phenomena that are very difficult to be observed in a real laboratory. In this paper we present an analysis and discussion about the very characteristics of though experiments as a potential instrument for physics teaching.

Fuel cell as molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) operates at high temperatures. Thus, cogeneration processes may be performed, generating heat for its own process or for other purposes of steam generation in the industry. The use of ethanol is one of the best options because this is a renewable and less environmentally offensive fuel, and is cheaper than oil-derived hydrocarbons, as in the case of Brazil. In that country, because of technical, environmental, and economic advantages, the use of ethanol by steam reforming process has been the most investigated process. The objective of this study is to show a thermodynamic analysis of steam reforming of ethanol, to determine the best thermodynamic conditions where the highest volumes of products are produced, making possible a higher production of energy, that is, a more efficient use of resources. To attain this objective, mass and energy balances were performed. Equilibrium constants and advance degrees were calculated to get the best thermodynamic conditions to attain higher reforming efficiency and, hence, higher electric efficiency, using the Nernst equation. The advance degree (according to Castellan 1986, Fundamentos da Fisica/Quimica, Editora LTC, Rio de Janeiro, p. 529, in Portuguese) is a coefficient that indicates the evolution of a reaction, achieving a maximum value when all the reactants' content is used of reforming increases when the operation temperature also increases and when the operation pressure decreases. However, at atmospheric pressure (1 atm), the advance degree tends to stabilize in temperatures above 700 degrees C; that is, the volume of supplemental production of reforming products is very small with respect to high use of energy resources necessary. The use of unused ethanol is also suggested for heating of reactants before reforming. The results show the behavior of MCFC. The current density, at the same tension, is higher at 700 degrees C than other studied temperatures such as 600 and 650 degrees C. This fact occurs due to smaller use of hydrogen at lower temperatures that varies between 46.8% and 58.9% in temperatures between 600 and 700 degrees C. The higher calculated current density is 280 mA/cm(2). The power density increases when the volume of ethanol to be used also increases due to higher production of hydrogen. The highest produced powers at 190 mA/cm(2) are 99.8, 109.8, and 113.7 mW/cm(2) for 873, 923, and 973 K, respectively. The thermodynamic efficiency has the objective to show the connection among operational conditions and energetic factors, which are some parameters that describe a process of internal steam reforming of ethanol.

This research investigated the perceptions and the meanings for the trainees of Physical Education regarding the indiscipline in the school. The methodology used was from qualitative nature, having as participants 16 students of a public course of Physical Education. The indiscipline was pointed by the trainees while a present problem in their practices and connected to different difficulties. Therefore, as methodological procedures more mentioned, appeared the blackmail, the agreements and the dialogue, being the school institution, outstanding while informative of the rules, of the rights and of the students' duties.

Ballroom dance and Forro are part of Brazilian culture, and Xote and Baiao are part of Forro. The aim of this study was to diagramate the dances Xote and Baiao they are danced inside São Paulo State and to describe rhythmly these movements. It was observed and filmed several college couples dancing Xote and Baiao for analysis and description of the movements of the dances, by a discursive way and by diagrams. It was identified two basic structures ("Lateral Basic Step" and "Forward and Back Basic Step"), and variation steps "Open" and "Change of places with Turn", very used by couples.

We intend to analyse the constraint structure of Teleparallelism employing the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for singular systems. This study is conducted without using an ADM 3+1 decomposition and without fixing time gauge condition. It can be verified that the field equations constitute an integrable system.

The cross-section for the scattering of a photon by the Sun's gravitational field, treated as an external field, is computed in the framework of R + R-2 gravity. Using this result, we found that for a photon just grazing the Sun's surface the deflection is 1.75 which is exactly the same as that given by Einstein's theory. An explanation for this pseudo-paradox is provided.

Hulthen's potential admits analytical solutions for its energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions corresponding to zero orbital angular momentum stales, but its non zero angular momentum states are not equally known. This work presents a vibrational-rotational analy sis of Hulthen's potential using hydrogenic eigenfunction bases, which may be of interest and useful to students of quantum mechanics at different stages.

Inspired in recent works of Biedenham [1, 2] on the realization of the q-algebra su(q)(2), We show in this note that the condition [2j + 1](q) = N-q(j) = integer, implies the discretization of the deformation parameter alpha, where q = e(alpha). This discretization replaces the continuum associated to ct by an infinite sequence alpha(1), alpha(2), alpha(3),..., obtained for the values of j, which label the irreps of su(q)(2). The algebraic properties of N-q(j) are discussed in some detail, including its role as a trace, which conducts to the Clebsch-Gordan series for the direct product of irreps. The consequences of this process of discretization are discussed and its possible applications are pointed out. Although not a necessary one, the present prescription is valuable due to its algebraic simplicity especially in the regime of appreciable values of alpha.

We generalize the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation for higher-order singular systems and obtain the equations of motion as total differential equations. To do this we first study the constraints structure present in such systems.

We study the bending of light caused by a static gravitational field generated by a localized material source in the context of quadratic gravity. Our calculation shows that for light rays passing close to the Sun the deflection Phi lies in the interval 0 <

In the framework of the spacetime with torsion, we obtain the flavor evolution equation of the mass neutrino oscillation in vacuum. A comparison with the result of general relativity case shows that the flavor evolutionary equations in Riemann spacetime and Weitzenbock spacetimes are equivalent in the spherical symmetric Schwarzschild spacetime, but turn out to be different in the case of the axial symmetry.

In this work a software developed in the Instituto de Fisica Gleb Wataghin, IFGW, UNICAMP, Campinas, SP, Brazil for obtaining thermal histories using apatite fission track analysis is presented. This software works in Microsoft-Windows environment. It will be freely disposable in the web site of the Departamento de Raios Cosmicos, IFGW, UNICAMP. Thermal histories obtained through this software are compared with those deduced using Monte Trax the software compatible with Apple Macintosh developed by Gallagher. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd.
