The present study investigated the effects of swimming training and metformin on metabolic aspects of obese rats. Wistar rats were divided into control (C), obese (O), Trained Obese (TO) and metformin obese (MO) groups. Obesity was induced by subcutaneous monosodium glutamate injection (4 mg/g body weight). Exercise program consisted in swimming 1 h/day, 5 days/week, for 8 weeks, supporting a load corresponding to 5% of body weight. Metformin was dissolved in the drinking water (1.4 mg/ml) for 8 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, rats were sacrificed and blood was collected for determinations of serum glucose, insulin and triglycerides and hematocrit. Samples of gastrocnemius muscle and liver were removed to evaluate triglycerides content MSG-induced obesity, increased serum glucose, insulin and triglycerides, while physical training was able to recover serum glucose and insulin and metformin treatment recovered serum insulin and slightly reduced the serum glucose. MSG-induced obesity also increased liver triglycerides content and physical training and metformin administration recovered these parameters. It was concluded that in MSG obese rats, physical exercise and metformin induced important metabolic alterations associated with an improvement in glucose homeostasis and in liver fat content.

The occurrence of malignant lymphoma is an increasingly important cause of morbidity and mortality in AIDS patients. The incidence of AIDS-related lymphoma in some developing countries such as Brazil is increasing as the survival of HIV infection has improved. Although there is a clear association between several types of immunodeficiency related lymphomas and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the association of EBV infection in AIDS-related lymphoma in Brazil, where the incidence of AIDS is high, is unknown. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 24 cases of AIDS-related lymphoma in Brazil were analyzed for morphologic classification, immunophenotype, and EBV association using in situ hybridization studies with an EBV-EBER1 biotinylated probe. Twenty cases of AIDS-related lymphoma were classified as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and four cases were Hodgkin's disease. Eleven non-Hodgkin's lymphomas were classified as diffuse large cell type, five cases were small non-cleaved cell, Burkitt-type, and four cases were large cell immunoblastic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Eighteen cases were of B-cell phenotype; one was a T-cell lymphoma, and one was classified as null. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was demonstrated in the majority of tumor cells of 11 of 20 (55%) of the cases non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and in 3 of 4 (75%) cases of Hodgkin's disease. AIDS-related lymphomas in Brazil are usually of large cell/immunoblastic type, but Hodgkin's disease is also seen. Both non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease are often associated with EBV infection. The non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is predominantly of B-cell phenotype.

Background: Aging is characterized by a decline in the postural control performance, which is based on a coherent and stable coupling between sensory information and motor action. Therefore, changes in postural control in elderlies can be related to changes in this coupling. In addition, it has been observed that physical activity seems to improve postural control performance in elderlies. These improvements can be due to changes in the coupling between sensory information and motor action related to postural control. Objective: the purpose of this study was to verify the coupling between visual information and body sway in active and sedentary elderlies. Methods: Sixteen sedentary elderlies ( SE), 16 active elderlies ( AE) and 16 young adults ( YA) were asked to stand upright inside a moving room in two experimental conditions: ( 1) discrete movement and ( 2) continuous movement of the room. Results: In the continuous condition, the results showed that the coupling between the movement of the room and body sway was stronger and more stable for SE and AE compared to YA. In the discrete condition, SE showed larger body displacement compared to AE and YA. Conclusions: SE have more difficulty to discriminate and to integrate sensory information than AE and YA indicating that physical activity may improve sensory integration. Copyright (C) 2005 S. This paper proposes the use of the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) method to represent and to analyse soccer players' actions distribution in the pitch. The seven games of the Brazilian National Team during the 2002 World Cup were analysed. The player's position actions were measured from videotapes in a computer interface. The results were: a) the graphical representation, given by two orthogonal segments in the two directions of maximal variability and centred at the mean of each player's actions position; b) the eccentricity measurement, given by the variability ratio and c) the actions zone area, given by variability product. The results showed that the individual characteristics of acting were well represented by the PCA, allowing comparisons among games and providing insights related to the tactical organisation of the team.

Administration of ovalbumin by aerosol to sensitised rats produced a rapid (15 min) protein exudation in different airway tissues, as determined by Evans blue staining. This was associated with marked mast cell degranulation determined by histological examination, with there being no difference between mucosal and connective tissue mast cells. A 5-day administration regimen with compound 48/80 selectively depleted connective tissue mast cell (Positive to berberine staining) without modifying ovalbumin-induced plasma protein extravasation. Treatment of rats with dexamethasone (1 mg/kg, - 12 h) or nor-dihydroguaiaretic acid (30 mg/kg i.p., - 30 min) significantly reduced ovalbumin-induced protein extravasation and preserved mucosal mast cell morphology. Indomethacin (4 mg/kg i.v., - 30 min) exerted no effect on either parameter. In conclusion, we propose the mucosal mast cell as a target cell responsible at least partly for the inhibitory actions of known anti-inflammatory drugs. We suggest an involvement of endogenous leukotriene(s), but not prostanoid(s), in mucosal mast cell activation/degranulation. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V.

Physical and chemical characteristics of intertidal sediments and their relationships with bacteria and cyanobacteria, were analyzed at four stations at Pereque Beach. Granulometric analysis showed that Pereque beach has sediment that is classified as sand. The lowest value of the sediment C/N rates (6.08), mainly due to a higher concentration of organic nitrogen, was found at the northern part of Pereque Beach, where organic matter of marine source was more prominent. In this area, density (9.6 x 106 cells cm(-3)), biomass (1992.04 ngC cm(-3)) and activity of bacteria were higher than at the southern end. In contrast, cyanobacteria density varied from 2.0 to 4.0 x 10(5) cells cm(-3), with biomass and total chlorophyll a of the sediment being higher at the southern part, where there are water input from Pereque River and higher organic matter of continental origin. The variability in the microbial population is discussed in the light of the sediment granulometry, organic matter quality, fresh water inflow and pollution. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
