The mechanical properties of metals with bcc structure, such as niobium and its alloys, have changed significantly with the introduction of heavy interstitial elements. These interstitial elements (nitrogen, for example), present in the alloy, occupy octahedral sites and constitute an elastic dipole of tetragonal symmetry and might produce anelastic relaxation. This article presents the effect of nitrogen on the anelastic properties of Nb-1.0 wt% Zr alloys, measured by means of mechanical spectroscopy using a torsion pendulum. The results showed complex anelastic relaxation structures, which were resolved into their constituent peaks, representing each relaxation process. These processes are due to stress-induced ordering of the interstitial elements around the niobium and zirconium of the alloy.

Anelastic relaxation measurements were performed in a Nb-46wt%Ti alloy, in the temperature range of 300 to 700 K, using a torsion pendulum operating at an oscillating frequency near 2.0 Hz. The samples were measured in different conditions: cold worked, annealed in ultra-high vacuum and doped with several quantities of nitrogen. The relaxation spectra obtained were resolved into their component peaks, corresponding to the different kinds of interaction of the interstitial solutes with the metallic matrix. The relaxation parameters of each process were calculated using Debye's elementary peaks.

This work summarizes the HdHr group of Hermitian integration algorithms for dynamic structural analysis applications. It proposes a procedure for their use when nonlinear terms are present in the equilibrium equation. The simple pendulum problem is solved as a first example and the numerical results are discussed. A computer-based sliding mode control (SMC) is analysed. The control law is accomplished using a computer and A/D and D/A converters. Two SMC designs are presented. The first one is a continuous-time conventional SMC design, with a variable structure law, which does not take into consideration the sampling period. The second one is a discrete-time SMC design, with a smooth sliding law, which does not have a structure variable and takes into consideration the sampling period. Both techniques are applied to control an inverted pendulum system. The performance of both the continuous-time and discrete-time controllers are compared. Simulations and experimental results are shown and the effectiveness of the proposed techniques is analysed.

In almost all cases, the goal of the design of automatic control systems is to obtain the parameters of the controllers, which are described by differential equations. In general, the controller is artificially built and it is possible to update its initial conditions. In the design of optimal quadratic regulators, the initial conditions of the controller can be changed in an optimal way and they can improve the performance of the controlled system. Following this idea, a LNU-based design procedure to update the initial conditions of PI controllers, considering the nonlinear plant described by Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models, is presented. The importance of the proposed method is that it also allows other specifications, such as, the decay rate and constraints on control input and output. The application in the control of an inverted pendulum illustrates the effectively of proposed method.

OBJETIVO: a presente pesquisa clínica, longitudinal e prospectiva, avaliou os efeitos do aparelho Pendex mediante o emprego de modelos de gesso. METODOLOGIA: utilizou-se uma amostra de 30 modelos de gesso, obtidos no início e no final da distalização dos molares superiores com o aparelho Pendex, de 15 jovens brasileiros tratados no Curso de Pós-Graduação, nível de Mestrado em Ortodontia, da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba - UNESP. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: os resultados mostraram aumento do perímetro do arco dentário superior com inclinação distal e controle transversal dos primeiros molares superiores.

A distalização dos molares superiores constitui um desafio na correção da má oclusão de Classe II em tratamentos sem extrações dentárias e sem avanço mandibular. Há uma procura por dispositivos que substituam a tração extrabucal (AEB) e que não exijam demasiada colaboração do paciente, o que estimula os ortodontistas a testarem métodos alternativos aos relatados na literatura. Dentre estes, destacam-se os aparelhos Pêndulo e Pendex de Hilgers. OBJETIVO: a realização desta pesquisa teve o intuito de avaliar, mediante a cefalometria, os efeitos do aparelho Pendex aplicado no final da dentadura mista e na dentadura permanente. METODOLOGIA: a amostra constou de 14 pacientes com má oclusão de Classe II bilateral, com média de idade de 11 anos e 3 meses. Foram tomadas duas telerradiografias em norma lateral, uma correspondente ao início do tratamento e outra aproximadamente 5 meses após sua finalização, quando a relação dos molares encontrava-se sobrecorrigida. RESULTADOS: após a determinação e mensuração das grandezas cefalométricas lineares e angulares e análise estatística (Teste t de Student), pode-se concluir que os efeitos do aparelho Pendex foram predominantemente ortodônticos: distalização da coroa dos primeiros molares permanentes numa velocidade média de 0,8 mm/mês e vestibularização dos incisivos superiores com aumento do trespasse horizontal. CONCLUSÃO: assim sendo, quando há indicação para distalização dos molares, cumpre-se fazer uma análise dos fatores envolvidos, a fim de eleger, com prudência, a solução terapêutica mais adequada às exigências individuais e profissionais.

In this paper, a load transportation system in platforms or suspended by cables is considered. It is a monorail device and is modelled as an inverted pendulum built on a car driven by a DC motor. The governing equations of motion were derived via Lagrange's equations. In the mathematical model we consider the interaction between the DC motor and the dynamical system, that is, we have a so-called non-ideal periodic problem. The problem is analysed and we also developed an optimal linear control design to stabilize the problem.

In this paper we conducted several analysis of the simulated dynamic behavior of two passive suspension types of the trailed sprayer booms. The suspension analysis was conducted under conditions of a bump track test ISO 5008, with two levels of speed (5 km h(-1) and 15 km h(-1)) and two track profiles proposed in these standards (bumpy and smooth). It was used the simulations software MATLAB (R), SIMULINK (R) and Visual Nastran (R). The results obtained showed that suspensions of trapezoidal type have good performance at low frequencies input (omega < 0,2 Hz) while suspensions of simple pendulum type have good performance in others conditions.

Nonideal systems are those in which one takes account of the influence of the oscillatory system on the energy supply with a limited power (Kononenko, 1969). In this paper, a particular nonideal system is investigated, consisting of a pendulum whose support point is vibrated along a horizontal guide by a two bar linkage driven by a DC motor, considered to be a limited power supply. Under these conditions, the oscillations of the pendulum are analyzed through the variation of a control parameter. The voltage supply of the motor is considered to be a reliable control parameter. Each simulation starts from zero speed and reaches a steady-state condition when the motor oscillates around a medium speed. Near the fundamental resonance region, the system presents some interesting nonlinear phenomena, including multi-periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic motion. The loss of stability of the system occurs through a saddle-node bifurcation, where there is a collision of a stable orbit with an unstable one, which is approximately located close to the value of the pendulum's angular displacement given by alpha (C)= pi /2. The aims of this study are to better understand nonideal systems using numerical simulation, to identify the bifurcations that occur in the system, and to report the existence of a chaotic attractor near the fundamental resonance. One of the most studied ceramic superconductors for application has been, undoubtedly, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Although being a multiphasic material, it has proved to have great advantages compared to other ceramic systems. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature call distinguish among different atomic jumps that occur inside the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, mechanical loss spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta bar shaped samples, made by a conventional method, have been measured between 80 and 600 K, using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies below 50 Hz, for samples annealed in vacuum up to 600 K. Possible relaxation mechanisms are proposed to explain the origin of the mechanical-loss peaks observed 300 and 500 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The presence of interstitial elements in metals cause strong changes in their physical, chemical or mechanical properties. These interstitial impurities interact with the metallic matrix atoms by a relaxation process known as stress induced ordering. Relaxation processes give rise to a peak in the internal friction spectrum, known as Snock effect. The presence of substitutional solutes has a strong influence on Snoek effect, particularly if the substitutional solute element is the one, which interacts with the interstitial element. Anelastic spectroscopy measurements provide information of the behavior of these impurities in the metallic matrix. In this paper, polycrystalline samples of Nb-4.7 at.%Ta alloy have been analyzed in the as-received condition. Measurements of anelastic spectroscopy were carried out using an inverted torsion pendulum, operating with frequency of 2.0-30.0 Hz and in a temperature range between 300 and 700 K. It was observed the presence of a relaxation structure that have been attributed to stress induced ordering due to interstitial atoms around atoms of the metallic matrix. The relaxation structure have been decomposed in its constituent peaks, what it allowed to identify the following relaxation processes: Ta-O, Nb-O and Nb-N. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
