Interim restorations are frequently used in prosthodontic treatments. Many complex situations require the combination of fixed and removable partial prostheses. An appropriate interim restoration design that accurately implements the treatment plan is necessary to prepare the oral cavity for the prostheses, and to contribute to the preservation and health of remaining natural teeth, bone support, and gingival tissues. This report describes a modified technique for construction of interim restorations with a combination of fixed and removable partial prostheses. The technique consists of the construction of a milled fixed prosthesis and removable partial denture with metallic framework for use during extensive treatment, improving masticatory function and esthetics and preserving the periodontal health of supporting structures. This interim restoration can also serve as a template for the definitive restoration, allowing patient and dentist to evaluate appearance and function and helping to ensure the success of the definitive restoration.

This study proposes to synthesize (1-x)PMN-xPT powders, where 0.10 < x < 0.45, using the T-modified columbite route. This methodology consists in the preparation of the MNT columbite precursor via the polymeric precursor method, followed by the solid state reaction with PbO to get the PMN-PT powders. It was verified that from 15 mol% of Ti, the MNT presents the coexistence of two main phases with different crystal symmetry: Rutile and Columbite. However, the synthesis of (1-x)PMN-xPT powders is not affected by this event. A detailed study of structural effects in MNT and PMN-PT powders as function of Ti content was made using the Rietveld method. It was also demonstrated that powders possess high chemical and microstructural homogeneity.

The present work reports the effects caused by barium on phase formation, morphology and sintering of lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-50PT). Ab initio study of 0.5PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.5Ba(x)Pb((1-x))TiO(3) ceramic powders, with x = 0, 0.20, and 0.40 was proposed, considering that the partial substitution of lead by barium can reestablish the equilibrium of monoclinic-tetragonal phases in the system. It was verified that even for 40 mol% of barium, it was possible to obtain pyrochlore-free PMN-PT powders. The increase of the lattice parameters of PMN-PT doped-powders confirmed dopant incorporation into the perovskite phase. The presence of barium improved the reactivity of the powders, with an average particle size of 120 nm for 40 mol% of barium against 167 mn for the pure sample. Although high barium content (40 mol%) was deleterious for a dense ceramic, contents up to 20 mol% allowed 95% density when sintered at 1100 degrees C for 4 h. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Intense violet-blue photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was verified in BaZrO3 (BZO) powders with structural order-disorder. Ab-initio calculations, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and PL were performed. Theoretical results showed that the local disorder in the network-formed Zr clusters present an important role in the formation of hole-electron pair. The experimental data and theoretical results are in agreement, indicating that the PL emission in BZO powders can be related to the structural order-disorder degree in the lattice. Strontium zirconate (SrZrO3) powders have been synthesized by the polymeric precursor method after heat treatment at different temperatures for 2 h in oxygen atmosphere. The decomposition of precursor powder was followed by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman). The UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurements suggested the presence of intermediary energy levels in the band gap of structurally disordered powders. XRD, Rietveld refinement and FT-Raman revealed that the powders are free of secondary phases and crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure. (C) 2007 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Intense and broad visible photoluminescent (PL) band was observed at room temperature in structurally disordered PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 powders. The lead zirconate titanate PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 powders prepared by the polymeric precursor method and heat treated at different temperatures were structurally characterized at long range by means of X-ray diffraction. The PL was measured at room temperature samples heat treated at different temperatures. Experimental measurements and quantum-mechanical calculations showed that the high structural order and the high structural disorder in PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 lattice are not favorable to the intense PL emission. Only samples containing simultaneous structural order and disorder in their lattice present the intense visible PL emission at room temperature. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Ultasonic spray pyrolysis (SP) has been investigated for the production of the barium strontium titanate (BST) powders from the polymeric precursors. The processing parameters, such as flux of aerosol and temperature profile inside the furnace, were optimized to obtain single phase BST. The powders were characterized by the methods of X-ray diffraction analysis, SEM, EDS and TEM. The obtained powders were submicronic, consisting of spherical, polycrystalline particles, with internal nanocrystalline structure. Crystallite size of 10 nut, calculated using Rietveld refinement, is in a good agreement with results of HRTEM. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, BSTSn powders prepared by the polymeric precursor method were heat treated in a domestic microwave oven (MW) using a SiC susceptor to absorb the microwave energy and transfer the heat to the powder. The main advantage of MW is to reduce the thermal treatment time for phase crystallization. The powders were heat treated at 300 degrees C for 20 h in conventional oven, 300 degrees C for 10 min, 20 min, and 30 min in MW and at 500 degrees C for 1 min in MW. After thermal treatment, the photoluminescent properties of powders at room temperature were analyzed. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Zirconia-based ceramics that retain their metastable tetragonal phase at room temperature are widely studied due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties. When these materials are prepared from precursor nanopowders with high specific surface areas, this phase is retained in dense ceramic bodies. In this work, we present a morphological study of nanocrystalline ZrO2-2.8 mol% Y2O3 powders synthesized by the gel-combustion method, using different organic fuels - alanine, glycine, lysine and citric acid - and calcined at temperatures ranging from 873 to 1173 K. The nanopore structures were investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental results indicate that nanopores in samples prepared with alanine, glycine and lysine have an essentially single-mode volume distribution for calcination temperatures up to 1073 K, while those calcined at 1173 K exhibit a more complex and wider volume distribution. The volume-weighted average of the nanopore radii monotonically increases with increasing calcination temperature. The samples prepared with citric acid exhibit a size distribution much wider than the others. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller technique was used to determine specific surface area and X-ray diffraction, environmental scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were also employed for a complete characterization of the samples.

Al2O3 and Al2-x Cr (x) O-3 (x = 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04) powders have been synthesized by the polymeric precursors method. A study of the structural evolution of crystalline phases corresponding to the obtained powders was accomplished through X-Ray Diffraction and UV-vis spectroscopy (reflectance spectra and CIEL* a*b* color data). The obtained results allow to identify the gamma-Al2O3 to alpha-Al2O3 phase transition. The single-phase alpha-Al2O3 powder was obtained after heat treatment at 1050 degrees C for 2 h. The results show that the green to red color transition and ruby luminescence lines observed for the powders of Al2-x Cr (x) O-3 are related to the gamma to alpha-Al2O3 phase transition and the temperature and time range for such transition depends on the chromium content.
