In this work, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study effect of PbS impurity on crystallization mechanism of phosphate glasses. Bulk glasses presented one crystallization peak while powdered glasses presented two distinct crystallization peaks. For both undoped and doped glasses were determined the activation energies for the crystallization and the Avrami n parameters. The activation energies for undoped phosphate glass were 336 +/- 6 and 213 +/- 3 kJ mol(-1), respectively, associated with first and second crystallization peaks. For doped glass, the obtained energies were 373 +/- 9 and 286 +/- 7 kJ mol(-1). The calculated Avrami parameters, based on first crystallization peaks, for undoped and doped glasses were 2.25 +/- 0.01 and 1.75 +/- 0.02, respectively. These values suggest that the first DSC peak, in both glasses, may be associated with surface crystallization. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of this study was to investigate cellular migration induced by calcium hydroxide to air-pouch cavities in mice. The migration was more specific to neutrophil and was dose and time dependent (peaking 96 h after stimulation). This migration was inhibited by pretreatment with thalidomide, indomethacin, MK886, meloxicam, dexamethasone, MK886 associated with indomethacin, and MK886 associated with indomethacin and dexamethasone. The air-pouch exudate from animals stimulated with calcium hydroxide showed an increase of leukotriene-B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (KC), and macrophage inflammatory protein 2 (MIP-2) release. Pretreatment with 3% thioglycollate increased the macrophage population in the air pouch but did not change neutrophil migration. Depleting the resident mast cells through chronic pretreatment with compound 48/80 did not alter neutrophil migration in response to calcium hydroxide. It was possible to conclude that calcium hydroxide-induced neutrophil migration to the air-pouch cavity in mice is mediated by LTB4, TNF-alpha, KC, MIP-2, and prostaglandins, but it was not dependent on macrophages or mast cells.

It has been shown that central or peripheral injections of the peptide relaxin induces water intake, not sodium intake in rats. Important inhibitory mechanisms involving serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the control of water and NaCl intake have been demonstrated in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN). In the present Study, we investigated the effects of bilateral injections of methysergide (serotonergic receptor antagonist) into the LPBN on intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) relaxin-induced water and NaCl intake in rats. Additionally, the effect of the blockade of central angiotensin AT(1) receptors with i.c.v. losartan on relaxin-induced water and NaCl intake in rats treated with methysergide into the LPBN was also investigated. Male Holtzman rats with cannulas implanted into the lateral ventricle (LV) and bilaterally in the LPBN were used. Intracerebroventricular injections of relaxin (500 ng/l mul) induced water intake (5.1+/-0.7 ml/120 min), but not significant 1.8% NaCl intake (0.5+/-0.4 ml/120 min). Bilateral injections of methysergide (4 mug/0.2 mul) into the LPBN strongly stimulated relaxin-induced 1.8% NaCl intake (34.5+/-10.9 ml/120 min) and slightly increased water intake (10.5+/-4.9 ml/120 min). The pretreatment with i.c.v. losartan (100 mug/l mul) abolished the effects of i.c.v. relaxin combined with LPBN methysergide on 1.8% NaCI intake (0.5+/-0.4 ml/120 min). Losartan (100 mug/l mul) also abolished relaxin-induced water intake in rats injected with methysergide into the LPBN (1.6+/-0.8 ml/120 min) or not (0.5+/-0.3 ml/120 min). Losartan (50 mug/l mul) partially reduced the effects of relaxin. The results show that central relaxin interacting with central angiotensinergic mechanisms induces NaCl intake after the blockade of LPBN serotonergic mechanisms. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Many animals behave as robbers or thieves of floral resources, causing damage to floral tissues or consuming resources used to attract pollinators, or producing effects similar to emasculation by reducing the pollen load in the anthers (which generally results in losses in terms of sexual reproduction). The present work examined the direct and indirect impacts caused by nectar-robbing on the reproductive success of Sparattosperma leucanthum. Different manipulations of the flowers were tested to determine if fruit production was influenced by the perforations made in the floral tissues (direct damage), and if there were changes in visitation frequencies or in the behaviors of effective pollinators (indirect damage). Perforations made by nectar robbers did not lower the reproductive success of the plant species studied. The bee Trigona spinipes was the most frequent visitor and caused the largest perforations in the calyx and corolla of S. leucanthum. Additionally, we noted the occurrence of pollen theft by this same bee in flowers that had been protected against nectar-robbing. These results suggest that if S. leucanthum had developed a mechanism of resistance to robbery by T spinipes it would probably have experienced even lower pollination levels as a result of reductions in the quantities of pollen available for transfer by effective pollinators. We were not able to evaluate if nectar depletion through robbery modified the behavior of the effective pollinators (bumblebees of the genus Bombus).

Scaphum nigra has a uniquechromosomecomplement among approximately 100 species studied so far belonging to the subfamily Phaneropterinae. It is formed by 2n ([male]) = 26 and a FN = 29 and derived from the ancestral karyotype of the group 2n ([male]) = 31, FN = 31, by means of two centric fusions and one tandem fusion. The first between the X chromosome and a medium-sized autosome giving rise to a neo-XY sex chromosome mechanism of recent origin, and the second between two acrocentric ones, the bigger and a medium size, that gave rise to a large submetacentric element whose length is very uncommon in the subfamily. This process has created a bimodal karyotype that contrasts with the majority in this group, whose chromosomes usually can be arranged in a decreasing order of size. A third rearrangement incorporating the chromatin of a medium-sized autosome to the bigger one, explains the reduction observed in the number of chromosomes and the enlarged size of the submetacentric elements. These features demonstrate the effectiveness of chromosome number, their morphology and the change of the sex mechanism as useful tools for taxonomy.

Myocardial reperfusion injury is associated with the infiltration of blood-borne polymorphonuclear leukocytes. We have previous described the protection afforded by annexin 1 (ANXA1) in an experimental model of rat myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. We examined the 1) amino acid region of ANXA1 that retained the protective effect in a model of rat heart IR; 2) changes in endogenous ANXA1 in relation to the IR induced damage and after pharmacological modulation; and 3) potential involvement of the formyl peptide receptor (FPR) in the protective action displayed by ANXA1 peptides. Administration of peptide Ac2-26 at 0, 30, and 60 min postreperfusion produced a significant protection against IR injury, and this was associated with reduced myeloperoxidase activity and IL-1 beta levels in the infarcted heart. Western blotting and electron microscopy analyses showed that IR heart had increased ANXA1 expression in the injured tissue, associated mainly with the infiltrated leukocytes. Finally, an antagonist to the FPR receptor selectively inhibited the protective action of peptide ANXA1 and its derived peptides against IR injury. Altogether, these data provide further insight into the protective effect of ANXA1 and its mimetics and a rationale for a clinical use for drugs developed from this line of research.

The productivity of Drosophila prosaltans treated with six concentrations of caffeine (from 50 mu g/ml to 2,500 mu g/ml of culture medium) during ten generations (similar to 8 months) decreased in a dosage dependent manner in every generation, but at the end of the treatment the flies in all experiments recovered normal productivity, except for those treated with 2,500 mu g/ml. Longevity in the tenth generation was significantly reduced in males and females only in the 2,500 mu g/ml dosage, with males being much more affected than females. In a previous study in which the treatment was done in a single generation, productivity exhibited only a partial recovery when the treatment ceased and longevity was significantly reduced in 1,500 mu g/ml dosages. The hypothesis of selection occurring in ten generations leading to recovery in productivity and to a reduction in the processes which cause a decrease in longevity is being considered.
