The application of interpolating MLS approximations to the analysis of MHD flows

The element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is a very attractive technique for solutions of partial differential equations, since it makes use of nodal point configurations which do not require a mesh. Therefore, it differs from FEM-like approaches by avoiding the need of meshing, a very demanding task for complicated geometry problems. However, the imposition of boundary conditions is not straightforward, since the EFGM is based on moving-least-squares (MLS) approximations which are not necessarily interpolants. This feature requires, for instance, the introduction of modified functionals with additional unknown parameters such as Lagrange multipliers, a serious drawback which leads to poor conditionings of the matrix equations. In this paper, an interpolatory formulation for MLS approximants is presented: it allows the direct introduction of boundary conditions, reducing the processing time and improving the condition numbers. The formulation is applied to the study of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flow problems, and the computed results confirm the accuracy and correctness of the proposed formulation. Collisional semiclassical approximations in phase-space representation

The Gaussian wave-packet phase-space representation is used to show that the expansion in powers of a of the quantum Liouville propagator leads, in the zeroth-order term, to results close to those obtained in the statistical quasiclassical method of Lee and Scully in the Weyl-Wigner picture. It is also verified that, propagating the Wigner distribution along the classical trajectories, the amount of error is less than that coming from propagating the Gaussian distribution along classical trajectories.

Error function approximations of interest in electrochemistry.

The error function is present in several equations describing eletrode processes. But, only approximations of this function are used. In this work, these and other approximations are studied and evaluated according to precision.

Bayesian approximations in randomized response model

Practical Bayesian inference depends upon detailed examination of posterior distribution. When the prior and likelihood are conjugate, this is easily carried out; however, in general, one must resort to numerical approximation. In this paper, our aim is to solve, using MAPLE, the Bayesian paradigm, for a very special data collecting procedure, known as the randomized-response technique. This allows researchers to obtain sensitive information while guaranteeing privacy to respondents. This approach intends to reduce false responses on sensitive questions. Exact methods and approximations will be compared from the accuracy point of view as well as for the computational effort.

Big fish are the best: Seed dispersal of Bactris glaucescens by the pacu fish (Piaractus mesopotamicus) in the Pantanal, Brazil

We studied the potential role as seed disperser of the pacu fish (Piaracrus mesopotamicus, Characidae) in the Pantanal of Brazil. The most important food item in the diet of the pacu in the wet season was fruits of the palm Bactris glaucescens found in the guts of 73 percent of all fishes collected (N = 70). We found a positive relationship between fish length, weight, and gape size and the number of intact seeds in their gut. Therefore, large pacus are especially important in dispersing B. glaucescens seeds within the studied system. Since the best seed dispersers are the largest fishes, which are preferred by commercial fisheries, we predict that the ongoing over fishing in freshwater ecosystems will have major impacts on the dispersal system of fish-dependent plants. We suggest that it is paramount to change the attitudes in fisheries management of fruit-eating fishes and urgent to evaluate the impact of fishing on forest regeneration.

Squeezed states phase space representation and semiclassical approximations in many-body systems

We derive an alternative semiclassical approach (to the Wigner-Kirkwood method) for many-body systems using a mapping scheme based on the squeezed states phase space representation. The new expansion is applied to the usual harmonic oscillator case and the differences with the Wigner-Kirkwood results are discussed. © 1990.

Activation function study for wavelet network

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate theoretically and experimentally the use of family of Polynomial Powers of the Sigmoid (PPS) Function Networks applied in speech signal representation and function approximation. This paper carries out practical investigations in terms of approximation fitness (LSE), time consuming (CPU Time), computational complexity (FLOP) and representation power (Number of Activation Function) for different PPS activation functions. We expected that different activation functions can provide performance variations and further investigations will guide us towards a class of mappings associating the best activation function to solve a class of problems under certain criteria.

Building sustainable values in organizations with the support of human resource management: Evidence from one firm considered as the 'best place to work' in Brazil

Researchers and other professionals unanimously agree that companies should become more sustainable, but this will not happen without the support of human resource management. Paradoxically, there is a lack of information on the support human resource management offers to organizational sustainability applied to real cases. Therefore, this research presents a case study on this topic that was carried out in a leading Brazilian company, which is considered as a model and has been selected as 'the best place to work in the country'. The results provide practical examples of how this family company has been working to guarantee an increasingly sustainable performance with the support of human resources, highlighting the achievements and challenges the company has faced. One of the main results indicates that companies seeking to achieve sustainability need the assistance of the human resource field in order to design a communication system which bridges the gap between practices and sustainable values. © 2012 Management Centre for Human Values.

Finding best urban routes based on analyses of high level and IOPT Petri net models

This paper presents a tool that combines two kinds of Petri Net analyses to set the fastest routes to one vehicle in a bounded area of traffic urban. The first analysis consists of the discovery of possible routes in a state space generated from an IOPT Petri net model given the initial marking as the vehicle position. The second analysis receives the routes found in the first analysis and calculates the state equations at incidence matrix created from the High Level Petri net model to define the fastest route for each vehicle that arrive in the roads. It was considered the exchange of information between vehicle and infrastructure (V2I) to get the position and speed of all vehicles and support the analyses. With the results obtained we conclude that is possible optimizing the urban traffic flow if this tool is applied to all vehicles in a bounded urban traffic. © 2012 IEEE.
