An automated system with a C-18 bonded silica gel packed minicolumn is proposed for spectrophotometric detection of arsenic using flow-injection hydride generation following sorbent extraction preconcentration. Complexes formed between arsenic(III) and ammonium diethyl dithiophosphate (ADDP) are retained on a C-18 sorbent. The eluted As-DDP complexes are merged with a 1.5% (w/v) NaBH4 and the resulting solution is thereafter injected into the hydride generator/gas-liquid separator. The arsine generated is carried out by a stream of N-2 and trapped in an alkaline iodine solution in which the analyte is determined by the arsenomolybdenum blue method. With preconcentration time of 120 s, calibration in the 5.00-50.0 mu g As l(-1) range and sampling rate of about 20 samples h(-1) are achieved, corresponding to 36 mg ADDP plus 36 mg ammonium heptamolybdate plus 7 mg hydrazine sulfate plus 0.7 mg stannous chloride and about 7 mi sample consumed per determination. The detection limit is 0.06 mu g l(-1) and the relative standard deviation (n = 12) for a typical 17.0 mu g As l(-1) sample is ca. 6%. The accuracy was checked for arsenic determination in plant materials from the NIST (1572 citrus leaves; 1573 tomato leaves) and the results were in agreement with the certified values at 95% confidence level. Good recoveries (94-104%) of spiked tap waters, sugars and synthetic mixtures of trivalent and pentavalent arsenic were also found. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The feasibility of using internal standardization (IS) to correct for interferences in hydride generation with in situ trapping in graphite furnace was evaluated. Arsenic was chosen as internal standard for Sb determination and Ir was used as permanent modifier. Fluctuations in the main parameters that affect the analytical results were minimized by IS and an effective contribution was verified in the studies of liquid phase interferences. Cobalt and Ni2+ were selected to illustrate the potential use of IS on the correction of interference by transition metals. The application of IS allows the Sb determination in samples containing up to 20-fold higher concentration of the Co2+ and Ni2+ when compared to the procedure without IS. The relative standard deviation of measurements varied from 0.3% to 0.7% and from 1.1% to 3.2% with and without IS, respectively. Recoveries within 92% and 107% of spiked aqueous solution containing Sb(III) and Sb(V) were found. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Throughout the world, biomonitoring has become the standard for assessing exposure of individuals to toxic elements as well as for responding to serious environmental public health problems. However, extensive biomonitoring surveys require rapid and simple analytical methods. Thus, a simple and high-throughput method is proposed for the determination of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and selenium (Se) in blood samples by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Prior to analysis, 200 l of blood samples was mixed with 500 l of 10% v/v tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution, incubated for 10 min, and subsequently diluted to 10 ml with a solution containing 0.05% w/v ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) + 0.005% v/v Triton X-100. After that, samples were directly analyzed by ICP-MS (ELAN DRC II). Rhodium was selected as an internal standard with matrix-matching calibration. Method detection limits were 0.08, 0.04, 0.5, 0.09, 0.12, 0.04, and 0.1 g//L for As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Se, respectively. Validation data are provided based on the analysis of blood samples from the trace elements inter-\comparison program operated by the Institut National de Sante Publique du Quebec, Canada. Additional validation was provided by the analysis of human blood samples by the proposed method and by using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). The method was subsequently applied for the estimation of background metal blood values in the Brazilian population. In general, the mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Se in blood were 1.1, 0.4, 890, 9.6, 2.1, 65.4, and 89.3 g/L, respectively, and are in agreement with other global populations. Influences of age, gender, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, and geographical variation on the values were also considered. Smoking habits influenced the levels of Cd in blood. The levels of Cu, Mn, and Pb were significantly correlated with gender, whereas Cu and Pb were significantly correlated with age. There were also interesting differences in Mn and Se levels in the population living in the north of Brazil compared to the south.

Time-of-flight measurements were carried out in orthorhombic sulfur for various fields, ranging from -2 to -20 kV/cm. No dependence of the mobility with the electric field was found but the current, normalized by the initial current, showed an electric field dependence at small times, decaying faster for larger electric field. After the failure of the usual models in explaining the resultsincluding the assumption of depth-dependent density of trapsa model assuming an extra mobility channel near the surface provided a reasonable set of parameters independent of the electric field. The measurements were carried out at 8.5, 29, 53, 68, and 79°C. © 1988 The American Physical Society.
Size, electrophoretic mobility, and ion dissociation of vesicles prepared with synthetic amphiphiles
Resumo:
Vesicles prepared with synthetic amphiphiles (dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide and chloride, dihexadecyl phosphate and its sodium salt) were obtained by sonication, ethanol injections, and chloroform injections. The hydrodynamic diameter of vesicles (Dh), estimated from the diffusivity measured by quasielastic light scattering, ranged from 230 to 3000 Å. The electrophoretic mobility (Um) was measured by free-flow electrophoresis. The zeta potential (ζ) and the degree of counterion dissociation (α) of the vesicles were calculated from Um and conductivity data, α decreased with increasing Dh of the vesicles, probably due to the decreasing headgroup area and the increasing counterion association needed to relax the surface electrostatic potential. The electrophoretic mobility was also calculated (Uc) according to an impenetrable, nonconducting sphere model with a spherically symmetric charge distribution approximation. Within the limits of the experimental error(s) of the (different) methods employed and the assumptions made in the calculations, the fact that the Um/Uc ratio ranged from 1.3 to 7.5 was considered to be a good agreement between the calculated and the experimental values. © 1990 American Chemical Society.

The authors studied the utility of the physical test of laryngeal movement in swallowing disorders of the oropharyngeal region. Measurement and palpation of the larynx during deglutition were performed in the neck of 14 dysphagic patients and in two normal control groups. The normal groups were used to establish the pattern of the movement and the normal values of laryngeal elevation. Control elevation ranged from 1.80 to 2.50 cm. In eight patients laryngeal motion was defective and presented values ranging from zero to 1.50 cm. Palpation during laryngeal movement also revealed unexpected anomalous displacement such as lateral shifting and lowering of the larynx. In six patients with defective laryngeal motion, pharyngeal and upper esophageal sphincter function were also impaired. Direct measurement and palpation of laryngeal mobility during deglutition is a noninvasive method that can be used to evaluate dysphagia and the risk for aspiration. Also, it allows physical assessment of the evolution of the disorder.

Compromised balance and loss of mobility are among the major consequences of Parkinson's disease (PD). The literature documents numerous effective interventions for improving balance and mobility. The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of two exercise programs on balance and mobility in people with idiopathic PD. Thirty-four participants, with idiopathic PD that ranged from Stage I to Stage III on the Hoehn & Yahr (H&Y) scale, were assigned to two groups. Group 1 (n = 21; 67±9 years old) was engaged in an intensive exercise program (aerobic capacity, flexibility, strength, motor coordination and balance) for 6 months: 72 sessions, 3 times a week, 60 minutes per session; while Group 2 (n = 13; 69±8 years old) participated in an adaptive program (flexibility, strength, motor coordination and balance) for 6 months: 24 sessions, once a week, 60 minutes per session. Balance and basic functional mobility were assessed in pre- and post-tests by means of the Berg Balance Scale and the Timed Up and Go Test. Before and after the interventions, groups were similar in clinical conditions (H&Y, UPDRS, and Mini-Mental). A MANOVA 2 (programs) by 2 (moments) revealed that both groups were affected by the exercise intervention. Univariate analyses showed that participants improved their mobility and balance from pre- to post-test. There were no differences between groups in either mobility or balance results. Both the intensive and adaptive exercise programs improved balance and mobility in patients with PD. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aims: To evaluate the spatio-temporal variables of gait and the isometric muscle strength component of the ankle in patients with peripheral diabetic neuropathy. Also, verify the relationship between these variables and gait parameters. Methods: This study involved 25 diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) participants (62.4 ± 8.36 years) and 27 age-matched healthy control individuals (64.48 ± 6.21 years). The assessment of the spatio-temporal parameters of gait was performed using an electronic baropodometry treadmill. Prior to the collection data, each participant was instructed to walk on the treadmill in her/his habitual self-selected speed. Results: Diabetic neuropathy group showed impairment of gait, with a smaller stride and length speed of the cycle, and increased duration of support time. Restricted dorsiflexion mobility and increased plantarflexion mobility were found, with a decrease in muscle strength of the dorsiflexors and plantiflexors. There was a significant relationship between plantiflexor muscle strength and the length and speed of the gait cycle. Also the muscle strengths of the plantiflexors and dorsiflexors, and the range of motion of dorsiflexion were predictors of gait performance. Conclusions: The ankle, muscle strength and ankle mobility variables could explain changes in gait speed and range of motion in patients with DPN, allowing for the application of preventive strategies. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Different conditions of extraction using water, a methanol-water mixture and nitric acid solutions were evaluated for speciation of As(iii), As(v), DMA and MMA in plant samples that previously received As(v) after being sown and emergence was investigated. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) using diluted nitric acid solutions was also performed for arsenic extraction from chicken feed samples. The separation and determination of arsenic species were performed using HPLC-ICP-MS. The interference standard method (IFS) using 83Kr+ as the IFS probe was employed to minimize spectral interferences caused by polyatomic species, such as 40Ar 35Cl+. The extraction procedures tested presented adequate extraction efficiencies (90%), and the four arsenic species evaluated were found in plant samples. Extractions with diluted nitric acid solution at 90 °C were the most efficient strategy, with quantitative recoveries for all four As species in plant tissues. On the other hand, the methanol-water mixture was the solvent with the lowest extraction efficiency (50-60%). For chicken feed samples, MAE at 100 °C for 30 min resulted in an extraction efficiency of 97% and only As(v) was found, without any species interconversion. The IFS method contributed to improving precision and limits of detection and quantification for all tested extraction procedures. Significant improvements on accuracy were obtained by applying the IFS method and recoveries between 77 and 94%, and 82 and 93% were obtained for plant extracts and chicken feed samples, respectively. This study aims to identify, describe, and analyse strategies used by a teacher to support the mobility of students with visual impairment in various school environments. A female student with visual impairment in Brazil, aged 5 years, and her classroom teacher participated in the study. Their interactions were videotaped, and later, their dialogue and actions were transcribed. Six themes of analysis were elaborated, one for each support strategy used by the teacher. The results revealed that the strategies employed by the teacher often hampered the child’s orientation and mobility. This was probably the result of a lack of assistance by professionals specialised in Orientation and Mobility, as stipulated in Brazilian legislation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of virtual reality and strength training on the balance, fear of falling and handgrip strength of older women with a history of falls. The fear of falling, mobility and grip strength were evaluated in 11 elderly fallers (72.4 ± 5.2 years). The faller group was submitted to 12 weeks of virtual reality and muscle strength training. The results showed improvement in mobility (p = 0.0004) and in the fear of falling (p = 0.002). No significant difference was observed for hand grip strength. It can be concluded that virtual reality and muscle strength interventions are beneficial for mobility and fear of falling in older women with a history of falls.

This paper is concerned with what a source precisely sees when it drives a receiver such as a continuous structural object. An equivalent lumped element system consisting of masses, springs and dampers is developed to visually represent the operational structural dynamics of a single-input structure at the driving point. The development is solely based on the mobility model of the driving point response. The mobility model is mathematically inverted to give the impedance model that is suitable for lumped element modeling. The two types of structures studied are unconstrained inertial objects and constrained resilient objects. The lumped element systems presented suggest a new view to dynamics that a single-input flexible structure in operation can be decomposed into the two subsystems: a base system of single degree of freedom (or of a mass for an inertial object) whose mass is in contact with the source and an appendage system consisting of a series of oscillators each of which is attached to the base mass. The driving point response is a result of the coupling between the two subsystems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
