Two high-performance liquid chromatographic methods for determination of residual monomer in dental acrylic resins are described. Monomers were detected by their UV absorbance at 230 nm, on a Nucleosil((R)) C-18 (5 mu m particle size, 100 angstrom pore size, 15 x 0.46 cm i.d.) column. The separation was performed using acetonitrile-water (55:45 v/v) containing 0.01% triethylamine (TEA) for methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate, and acetonitrile-water (60:40 v/v) containing 0.01% TEA for isobutyl methacrylate and 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate as mobile phases, at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. Good linear relationships were obtained in the concentration range 5.0-80.0 mu g/mL for methyl methacrylate, 10.0-160.0 mu g/mL for butyl methacrylate, 50.0-500.0 mu g/mL for isobutyl methacrylate and 2.5-180.0 mu g/mL for 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate. Adequate assay for intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy was observed during the validation process. An extraction procedure to remove residual monomer from the acrylic resins was also established. Residual monomer was obtained from broken specimens of acrylic disks using methanol as extraction solvent for 2 h in an ice-bath. The developed methods and the extraction procedure were applied to dental acrylic resins, tested with or without post-polymerization treatments, and proved to be accurate and precise for the determination of residual monomer content of the materials evaluated. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique was applied to measure phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.5) activity in soybean (Glycine max L. Merril cv. BR16) roots. t-Cinnamate, the catalytic product of the PAL reaction was quantified at 275 nm by isocratic elution with methanol:water through an ODS(M) column. Comparative experiments were carried out with 1.0 mM ferulic acid, an inducer of PAL activity. The results suggest that liquid chromatography is a rapid and sensitive method to analyze PAL activity in non-purified extract.

The methanolic extract of the bark of the medicinal plant Qualea parviflora (Vochysiaceae) contains new nor-seco-triterpene and pentacyclic triterpenoids. They were separated in a preparative scale using droplet counter-current chromatography. The optimum solvent used was composed of a mixture of CHCl3/MeOH/H2O (43:37:20, v/v) in the descending mode and led to a successful separation of the new compound 28-nor-17, 22-seco-2 alpha, 3 beta, 19, 22, 23-pentahydroxy-Delta(12)-olecinane, besides the known triterpenoids bellericagenin B, bellericaside B and arjunglucoside I. Identification was performed by ESI-MS, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR analyses.

The methanolic extract of the leaves of the medicinal plant Byrsonima crassa (Malpighiaceae) contain flavonoids with antioxidant activity. They were separated in a preparative scale using high-speed counter-current chromatography. The optimum solvent system used was composed of a mixture of ethyl acetate-n-propanol-water (140:8:80 (v/v/v)) and led to a successful separation between monoglucosilated flavonoids (quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-arabinoside, quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactoside) and the biflavonoid amentoflavone in only 3.5 h. The purities of quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-arabinoside (95 mg), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactoside (16 mg) and the biflavonoid amentoflavone (114 mg) were all isolated at purity over 95%. Identification was performed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and UV analyses. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The hybrid formalism is used to quantize the superstring compactified to two-dimensional target-space in a manifestly spacetime supersymmetric manner. A quantizable sigma model action is then constructed for the type II superstring in curved two-dimensional supergravity backgrounds which can include Ramond-Ramond flux. Such curved backgrounds include Calabi-Yau fourfold compactifications with Ramond-Ramond flux, and new extremal black hole solutions in two-dimensional dilaton supergravity theory. These black hole solutions are a natural generalization of the CGHS model and might be possible to describe using a supergroup version of the SL(2, R)/U(1) WZW model. We also study some dynamical aspects of the new black holes, such as formation and evaporation. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V.

The sl(2) affine Toda model coupled to matter is shown to describe various features, such as the spectrum and string tension, of the low-energy effective Lagrangian of two-dimensional QCD (one flavor and N colors). The corresponding string tension is computed when the dynamical quarks are in the fundamental representation of SU(N) and in the adjoint representation of SU(2).

We discuss two-dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) under time-periodic variation of the scattering length. In particular we argue that for high-frequency variation there exist stable self-confined condensates without an external trap, when the do component of the scattering length is negative. Our results are based on a variational approximation, on direct averaging of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and on numerical simulations.

We study the noncommutative generalization of (Euclidean) integrable models in two dimensions, specifically the sine- and sinh-Gordon and the U(N) principal chiral models. By looking at tree-level amplitudes for the sinh-Gordon model we show that its naive noncommutative generalization is not integrable. on the other hand, the addition of extra constraints, obtained through the generalization of the zero-curvature method, renders the model integrable. We construct explicit nonlocal nontrivial conserved charges for the U(N) principal chiral model using the Brezin-Itzykson-Zinn-Justin-Zuber method. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present preliminary results of our numerical study of the critical dynamics of percolation observables for the two-dimensional Ising model. We consider the (Monte-Carlo) short-time evolution of the system obtained with a local heat-bath method and with the global Swendsen-Wang algorithm. In both cases, we find qualitatively different dynamic behaviors for the magnetization and Omega, the order parameter of the percolation transition. This may have implications for the recent attempts to describe the dynamics of the QCD phase transition using cluster observables.

We show that an anomaly-free description of matter in (1+1) dimensions requires a deformation of the 2D relativity principle, which introduces a non-trivial centre in the 2D Poincare algebra. Then we work out the reduced phase space of the anomaly-free 2D relativistic particle, in order to show that it lives in a noncommutative 2D Minkowski space. Moreover, we build a Gaussian wave packet to show that a Planck length is well defined in two dimensions. In order to provide a gravitational interpretation for this noncommutativity, we propose to extend the usual 2D generalized dilaton gravity models by a specific Maxwell component, which guages the extra symmetry associated with the centre of the 2D Poincare algebra. In addition, we show that this extension is a high energy correction to the unextended dilaton theories that can affect the topology of spacetime. Further, we couple a test particle to the general extended dilaton models with the purpose of showing that they predict a noncommutativity in curved spacetime, which is locally described by a Moyal star product in the low energy limit. We also conjecture a probable generalization of this result, which provides strong evidence that the noncommutativity is described by a certain star product which is not of the Moyal type at high energies. Finally, we prove that the extended dilaton theories can be formulated as Poisson-Sigma models based on a nonlinear deformation of the extended Poincare algebra.

The recovery of the pharmaceuticals bezafibrate and tetracycline from water was evaluated, using Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) with the aim of applying this technique to interrupt the pharmaceuticals' photodegradation by photo-Fenton process for further analysis. Sep-Pack C-18, Strata X, and Oasis HLB cartridges were evaluated. Oasis HLB showed the most satisfactory recovery and repeatability results: 98% (CV - 1%) for bezafibrate (20.0 mg L-1) and 76% (CV = 1%) for tetracycline (25.0 mg L-1). There was not a significant decrease in recovery at lower concentrations of the pharmaceuticals, and neither when present in Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) effluent matrix.
