The purpose of this work was to evaluate the corrosion of commercially pure (CP) titanium and Ti6Al4V in vitro at different F- concentrations regularly found in the oral cavity by using different electrochemical tests and surface analysis techniques. electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit potential (OCP) and potentio-dynamic polarization tests were associated to advanced characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, AFM, ICP-MS and XPS. OCP tests revealed a higher reactivity of both CP titanium and Ti6Al4V at 12,300 ppm F- concentration than that recorded at 227 ppm F-. Also, a significant decrease of the corrosion resistance of both materials was noticed by EIS in fluoride solutions. Material loss caused by corrosion was noticed on titanium surfaces by SEM and AFM in the presence of high F- concentration. CP titanium degraded by pitting corrosion while Ti6Al4V suffered from general corrosion showing micro-cracks on surface. Furthermore, a high release of metallic ions from the test samples after immersion at high F concentrations was detected by ICP-MS, that can be potentially toxic to oral tissues. Objectives: The aim of this study is to report on the treatment of mandibular Class II furcation defects with enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) combined with a beta TCP/HA (beta-tricalcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite) alloplastic material. Method and Materials: Thirteen patients were selected. All patients were nonsmokers, systemically healthy, and diagnosed with chronic periodontitis; had not taken medications known to interfere with periodontal tissue health and healing; presented one Class II mandibular furcation defect with horizontal probing equal to or greater than 4 mm at buccal site. The clinical parameters evaluated were probing depth (PD), relative gingival margin position (RGMP), relative vertical clinical attachment level (RVCAL), and relative horizontal clinical attachment level (RHCAL). A paired Student t test was used to detect differences between the baseline and 6-month measurements, with the level of significance of .05. Results: After 6 months, the treatment produced a statistically significant reduction in PD and a significant gain in RVCAL and RHCAL, but no observable change in RGMP. RVCAL ranged from 13.77 (+/- 1.31) at baseline to 12.15 (+/- 1.29) after 6 months, with a mean change of -1.62 +/- 1.00 mm (P<.05). RHCAL ranged from 5.54 (+/- 0.75) to 2.92 (+/- 0.92), with a mean change of -2.62 +/- 0.63 mm (P<.05). After 6 months, 76.92% of the patients improved their diagnosis to Class I furcation defects while 23.08% remained as Class II. Conclusion: The present study has shown that positive clinical results may be expected from the combined treatment of Class II furcation defects with EMD and beta TCP/HA, especially considering the gain of horizontal attachment level. Despite this result, controlled clinical studies are needed to confirm our outcomes.

This study evaluated the occurrence of enteric bacteria and pseudomonads resistant to tetracycline and beta-lactams in the oral cavity of patients exhibiting gingivitis (n=89); periodontitis (n=79), periodontally healthy (n=50) and wearing complete dentures (n=41). Microbial identification and presence of resistance markers associated with the production of beta-lactamases and tetracycline resistance were performed by using biochemical tests and PCR. Susceptibility tests were carried out in 201 isolates of enteric cocci and rods. Resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, imipenem, meropenem and tetracycline was detected in 57.4%, 34.6%, 2.4%, 1.9% and 36.5% of the isolates, respectively. beta-lactamase production was observed in 41.2% of tested microorganisms, while the most commonly found beta-lactamase genetic determinant was gene bla(TEM). Tetracycline resistance was disseminated and a wide scope of tet genes were detected in all studied microbial genus.

A novel porous silica matrix has been prepared from Pyrex glass, using hydrothermal treatment under saturated-steam condition. This process makes it possible to obtain, in one step, a silica support formed of a homogeneously distributed and interconnected macropore microstructure. The new matrix contains silanol groups that can be used in reactions of surface modification to provide a hybrid material and a selective macrofiltration membrane, and also it can improve chemical inertness. The porous matrix is noncrystalline as obtained and, after thermal treatment at temperatures higher than 950degreesC, exhibits an X-ray pattern characteristic of alpha-cristobalite and low volume contraction. The present samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffractometry, atomic absorption, and high-resolution solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. The results present a new way of producing a macroporous silica matrix.

The pseudo-Class III can be defined as a functional reflex of an anterior positioning of the mandible, an acquired muscular position that simulates a mesiocclusion. The diagnosis and treatment plan of this condition must be based on a cephalometric evaluation that provides information about the relative contributions of the skeletal and dental components to the malocclusion. There is still great controversies about when is the best moment to start the Class III treatment. The purpose of this article is to describe a case report in which a Class III patient was successfully treated with reverse traction.

The purpose of this study is to make a 3-dimensional (3-D) evaluation of the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) in patients with class I, II, and III malocclusion. Sixty patients were evaluated. The patients were divided in 3 groups according to their occlusion classification. The volume and area of PAS were evaluated using the software Dolphin 3-D Imaging in the preoperative period for orthognathic surgery. PAS volume and area were influenced by different patterns of malocclusion. The mean volume and area for class III patients were statistically bigger than for classes I and II patients (P < .001). There was also a significant difference for volume values between class I and II patients, being the bigger volume for the class I patients (P < .05). It was possible to conclude that the class III patients presented a bigger PAS compared with classes I and II patients.

Phospholipases D (PLDs), the major dermonecrotic factors from brown spider venoms, trigger a range of biological reactions both in vitro and in vivo. Despite their clinical relevance in loxoscelism, structural data is restricted to the apo-form of these enzymes, which has been instrumental in understanding the functional differences between the class I and II spider PLDs. The crystal structures of the native class II PLD from Loxosceles intermedia complexed with myo-inositol 1-phosphate and the inactive mutant H12A complexed with fatty acids indicate the existence of a strong ligand-dependent conformation change of the highly conserved aromatic residues, Tyr 223 and Trp225 indicating their roles in substrate binding. These results provided insights into the structural determinants for substrate recognition and binding by class II PLDs.
