Soil organic matter (SOM) constitutes an important reservoir of terrestrial carbon and can be considered an alternative for atmospheric carbon storage, contributing to global warming mitigation. Soil management can favor atmospheric carbon incorporation into SUM or its release from SOM to atmosphere. Thus, the evaluation of the humification degree (HD), which is an indication of the recalcitrance of SOM, can provide an estimation of the capacity of carbon sequestration by soils under various managements. The HD of SOM can be estimated by using various analytical techniques including fluorescence spectroscopy. In the present work, the potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to estimate the HD of SUM was evaluated for the first time. Intensities of emission lines of Al, Mg and Ca from LIBS spectra showing correlation with fluorescence emissions determined by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) reference technique were used to obtain a multivaried calibration model based on the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) method. The values predicted by the proposed model (A-LIBS) showed strong correlation with LIFS results with a Pearson's coefficient of 0.87. The HD of SUM obtained after normalizing A-LIBS by total carbon in the sample showed a strong correlation to that determined by LIFS (0.94), thus suggesting the great potential of LIBS for this novel application. This project has several objectives: To determine medium values and variations of the density, porosity, humidity, shrinkage volume and the coefficient of mass attenuation of gamma radiation of 59,6 keV of the radioisotope 241Am, using samples of equine radio, in growth and adult. The samples of bones were supplied by the Department of Pathology of University of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics - UNESP campus Botucatu. Bones of the paws front left of two males were used. Of each bone ten samples were removed. Those samples were prepared to just obtain compact bony fabric, being submitted to the rehearsal of determination of the density by the immersion method in water and determination of the coefficient attenuation lineal for the method of attenuation of the radiation of the 241Am, also obtaining your humidity content. Still, they were obtained new samples starting from the ground samples and verified the density of the particles present in that, obtaining the medium value of the coefficient of mass attenuation. The results showed the medium values and significant statistical variations of the density, porosity, humidity, shrinkage volume and coefficient of mass attenuation of gamma radiation of 59, 6 keV of the radioisotope 241Am in the samples, establishing some relationships between of the certain physical parameters with biological aspects and possible existent influences between them

Methods based on genetic markers to estimate the coefficient of heritability in natural populations are important to understand the effects of natural selection on inheritance of quantitative traits. The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic control of the trait plant height in a fragmented population of Araucaria angustifolia. This study was conducted in a forest fragment of 5.4 ha of area, located in the State of Parana, Brazil. Estimates of heritability were performed using data from genotypes and height of regenerating individuals of the population. Four methods to estimate the relatedness between pairs of individuals (RITLAND, 1996; LYNCH; RITLAND, 1999; QUELLER; GOODNIGHT, 1989; WANG, 2002) for three distances (without criteria, 25 and 50 m) were used. The coefficient of heritability estimated using the estimator of relatedness of Ritland (1996), suggest that the genetic control of the trait height is low in the regeneration, thus the natural selection as well as the artificial selection have a low potential to change the mean of the population. The estimates based on the other methods to calculate the relatedness presented low precision, indication that these methods are not adequate for the data used.

The objective of the present work was to estimate the genetic parameters of morphological traits, such as plant growth, fruit and seed production; and oil content and also to provide a source of superior genetic material for the breeding program of Jatropha curcas. For that, a J. curcas open pollination progeny test was set up in Sao Manuel Experimental Station, of College of Agricultural Sciences (FCA) of Sao Paulo State University (UNESP). The experimental design was of completely randomized blocks with 30 progenies, three replications, and eight plants per linear plot. We evaluated plants height (ALT), number of branches per plant (NRP), number of inflorescences per plant (NINE), number of fruits per plant (NF), weight of fruits (PE), weight of seeds (PS) and oil content % (TO). The software SELEGEN was the used to estimate the genetic parameters. The individual genetic variation coefficients (CVg) and progeny genetic variation coefficients (CVgp) at 24 months were 26.7% and 13.4% for height and 21.2% and 10.6% for number of branches. At 48 months the heritability coefficients among the progeny averages (h(mp)(2)) were 0.41 (ALT); 0.31 (NRP); 0.77 (NINF), and 0.44 (NF). The coefficient of heritability for individual plant level of oil content (TO %) was very low (h(a)(2) = 0.03), therefore, for the heritability of progeny means was higher than the individual level (h(mp)(2) = 0.37). Among progenies, some of them were superior for both, and seed production and oil content. We conclude that the present J. curcas population has enough genetic variability allowing obtaining gains through advanced generations.

To date little is known about the reliability of peak oxygen consumption (VO2pEAK) in incremental metronome paced step tests (1ST) and the reliability of on-kinetics VO2 has never been studied. We aimed to study the reliability of both tests. Eleven healthy subjects performed two ISTs until exhaustion. On two different days two duplicate 4 min constant metronome paced step tests (CST) were performed. VO2PEAK, mean response time (MRT) and phase II time constant (tau) were tested for reproducibility using the paired t-tests, in addition to the limits of agreement (LOA) and within subject coefficient of variation (COV). With a 95% LOA of 0.38 to 0.26 L min(-1), -8.7 to 9.1 s and -9.9 to 10.5 s they exhibit a COV of 3%, 4.5% and 6.9% for VO2PEAK, MRT and tau respectively. ST are sufficiently reliable for maximal and submaximal aerobic power assessments in healthy subjects and new studies of oxygen uptake kinetics in selected patient groups are warranted. Animal by-product meals have large variability in crude protein (CP) content and digestibility. In vivo digestibility procedures are precise but laborious, and in vitro methods could be an alternative to evaluate and classify these ingredients. The present study reports prediction equations to estimate the CP digestibility of meat and bone meal (MBM) and poultry by-product meal (PM) using the protein solubility in pepsin method (PSP). Total tract CP digestibility of eight MBM and eight PM samples was determined in dogs by the substitution method. A basal diet was formulated for dog maintenance, and sixteen diets were produced by mixing 70 % of the basal diet and 30 % of each tested meal. Six dogs per diet were used to determine ingredient digestibility. In addition, PSP of the MBM and PM samples was determined using three pepsin concentrations: 0·02, 0·002 and 0·0002 %. The CP content of MBM and PM ranged from 39 to 46 % and 57 to 69 %, respectively, and their mean CP digestibility by dogs was 76 (2·4) and 85 (2·6) %, respectively. The pepsin concentration with higher Pearson correlation coefficients with the in vivo results were 0·0002 % for MBM (r 0·380; P = 0·008) and 0·02 % for PM (r 0·482; P = 0·005). The relationship between the in vivo and in vitro results was better explained by the following equations: CP digestibility of MBM = 61·7 + 0·2644 × PSP at 0·0002 % (P = 0·008; R (2) 0·126); and CP digestibility of PM = 54·1 + 0·3833 × PSP at 0·02 % (P = 0·005; R (2) 0·216). Although significant, the coefficients of determination were low, indicating that the models were weak and need to be used with caution.
