We quantize the superstring on the AdS2 × S2 background with Ramond-Ramond flux using a PSU(1,1\2)/U(1) × U(1) sigma model with a WZ term. One-loop conformal invariance of the model is guaranteed by a general mechanism which holds for coset spaces G/H where G is Ricci-flat and H is the invariant locus of a ℤ4 automorphism of G. This mechanism gives conformal theories for the PSU(1,1\2) × PSU(2\2)/SU(2) × SU(2) and PSU(2,2\4)/SO(4,1) × SO(5) coset spaces, suggesting our results might be useful for quantizing the superstring on AdS3 × S3 and AdS5 × S5 backgrounds. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. We construct a centerless W-infinity type of algebra in terms of a generator of a centerless Virasoro algebra and an abelian spin 1 current. This algebra conventionally emerges in the study of pseudo-differential operators on a circle or alternatively within KP hierarchy with Watanabe's bracket. Construction used here is based on a spherical deformation of the algebra W ∞ of area preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-manifold. We show that this deformation technique applies to the two-loop WZNW and conformal affine Toda models, establishing henceforth W ∞ invariance of these models.

Using the pure spinor formalism, a quantizable sigma model has been constructed for the superstring in an AdS(5) X S-5 background with manifest PSU(2,2 vertical bar 4) invariance. The PSU(2,2 vertical bar 4) metric g(AB) has both vector components gab and spinor components g, 3, and in the limit where the spinor components g, 3 are taken to infinity, the AdS5 X S5 sigma model reduces to the worldsheet action in a flat background. In this paper, we instead consider the limit where the vector components g(ab) are taken to infinity. In this limit, the AdS5 X S5 sigma model simplifies to a topological A-model constructed from fermionic N=2 superfields whose bosonic components transform like twistor variables. Just as d=3 Chern-Simons theory can be described by the open string sector of a topological A-model, the open string sector of this topological A-model describes d=4 N=4 super-Yang-Mills. These results might be useful for constructing a worldsheet proof of the Maldacena conjecture analogous to the Gopakumar-Vafa-Ooguri worldsheet proof of Chern-Simons/conifold duality.

Starting out with an anomaly free lagrangian formulation for chiral scalars, which includes a Wess-Zumino term (to cancel the anomaly), we formulate the corresponding hamiltonian problem. Then we use the (quantum) Siegel invariance to choose a particular solution, which turns out to coincide with the one obtained by Floreanini and Jackiw. © 1988.

We analyze the constraints on possible anomalous contributions to the W+W-Z vertex coming from non-universal radiative corrections to the Z → bb̄ width. We parametrize these corrections in terms of ∈b and use the LEP data to establish the allowed values for the anomalous triple couplings. We examine all CP conserving effective operators that exhibit SU(2)L × U(1)Y gauge invariance and do not give any tree level contribution to the present experimental observables. For some of these operators our constraints are comparable with the bounds coming from a global fit of the oblique parameters, which evidences the increasing relevance of the precise measurement of the b-quark parameters at LEP for the search of new physics.
