The effect of the sintering method on the microstructural and electrical properties of (Pb(0.89)Nd(0.02)La(0.09))(Zr(0.65)Ti(0.35))O(3) (PNLZT) ceramics was studied by impedance spectroscopy. Structural and microstructural analyses were performed using x-ray and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Two different sintering routes were employed: the conventional and the hot-pressing sintering methods. The impedance analysis provided a convincing evidence for the existence of both grain (g) and grain boundary (gb) contributions to the conduction process. An equivalent circuit for the impedance behaviour has been proposed and discussed. The variation in the sintering method produces significant changes in the grain and grain boundary conductivities. For the grain effect, the main conduction mechanism has been associated with oxygen vacancy migration. Otherwise, for grain boundary conductivity the impedance behaviour has been discussed in terms of the brick-layer and the constriction resistance models (BLM and CRM, respectively).

Electrical conductivity and H-1 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques were used to investigate the ion-exchanged layered lead-niobate perovskite HPb2Nb3O10. nH(2)O, over the temperature range 90-350 K. Compounds were synthesized by the sol-gel method and calcinated at 650 degreesC. Analysis of the NMR data gives activation energies for the proton motion in the range 0.14-0.40 eV, which are dependent on the water content. The frequency and temperature dependencies of the proton spin-lattice relaxation times show that the character of the motion of the: water molecules is essentially two-dimensional, reflecting the layered structure of the material. The H-1 line-narrowing transition and the single spin-lattice relaxation rate maximum, observed in the hydrated compounds, are consistent with a Grotthuss-like mechanism for the proton diffusion. Tin dioxide varistors doped with Coo, ZnO, Ta2O5 and Cr2O3 were prepared by the mixed oxide method. Temperature dependent impedance spectroscopy revealed two different activation energies, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. These activation energies were associated with the adsorption and reaction of O-2 species at the grain boundary interface. We show that Cr2O3 improves the varistor properties, generating sites for the adsorption of O' and O at the grain boundary region. The O' and O defects are truly responsible for the barrier formation at the grain boundary interface. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The nonohmic electrical features of (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics, which have very strong gigantic dielectric is believed originate from potential barriers at the grain boundaries. In the present study, we used the admittance and impedance spectroscopy technique to investigate (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics with low nonohmic electrical properties. The study was conducted under two different conditions: on as-sintered ceramics and on ceramics thermally treated in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. The results confirm that thermal treatment in oxygen-rich atmospheres influence the nonohmic properties. Annealing at oxygen-rich atmospheres improve the nonohmic behavior and annealing at oxygen-poor atmospheres decrease the nonohmic properties, a behavior already reported for common metal oxide nonohmic devices and here firstly evidenced for the (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite related materials. The results show that oxygen also influences the capacitance values at low frequencies, a behavior that is indicative of the Schottky-type nature of the potential barrier. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. We report here the utilization of atomid layer deposition to passivate surface map states in mosoporous TiO2 nanoparticles for solid state dye sensitized solar cells based on 9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). By depositing ZrO2 films with angstrom-level precision, coating the mesoporous TiO2 produces over a two-fold enhancement in short-circuit current density, as compared to a control device. Impedance spectroscopy measurements provide evidence that the ZrO2 coating reduces recombination lossed at the TiO2/spiro-OMeTAD interface and passivates localized surface states. Low-frequency negative capacitances, frequently observed in nanocomposite solar cells, have been associated with the surface-state mediated charge transfer from TiO2 to the spiro-OMeTAD.

Complex electro-optical analysis is a very useful approach to separate different kinetic processes that occur during ionic insertion reactions in electrochromic oxide materials. In this paper, we use this type of combined technique to investigate ionic and optical changes in different oxide host systems, i.e., in two oxide hosts, specifically WO3 and Nb2O5. A comparison of their electro-optical responses revealed the presence of an ionic trapping contribution to the kinetics of the coloring sites, which was named here as coloring ionic trapping state. As expected, this coloring trapping process is slower in Nb2O5 since the reduction potential of Nb2O5 is more negative (more energy is needed for a higher degree of coloration). A phenomenological solid-state model that encompasses homogeneous charge transfer and valence trapping was proposed to explain the coloring ionic trapping process. Basically the model is able to explain how ionic dynamics at low frequency region, i.e., the slower kinetic step, controls the coloring kinetics, i.e., how it is capable to regulate the coloring rates.Optical transient analyses demonstrated the possibility of the presence of more than one coloring ionic trap, indicating the complexity of the processes involved in coloration phenomenon in metal oxide host systems.
