We consider the management branch model where the random resources of the subsystem are given by the exponential distributions. The determinate equivalent is a block structure problem of quadratic programming. It is solved effectively by means of the decomposition method, which is based on iterative aggregation. The aggregation problem of the upper level is resolved analytically. This overcomes all difficulties concerning the large dimension of the main problem.

Let p be a prime, and let zeta(p) be a primitive p-th root of unity. The lattices in Craig's family are (p - 1)-dimensional and are geometrical representations of the integral Z[zeta(p)]-ideals < 1 - zeta(p)>(i), where i is a positive integer. This lattice construction technique is a powerful one. Indeed, in dimensions p - 1 where 149 <= p <= 3001, Craig's lattices are the densest packings known. Motivated by this, we construct (p - 1)(q - 1)-dimensional lattices from the integral Z[zeta(pq)]-ideals < 1 - zeta(p)>(i) < 1 - zeta(q)>(j), where p and q are distinct primes and i and fare positive integers. In terms of sphere-packing density, the new lattices and those in Craig's family have the same asymptotic behavior. In conclusion, Craig's family is greatly extended while preserving its sphere-packing properties.

A prescription for computing the propagator for D-dimensional higher-derivative gravity theories, based on the Barnes-Rivers operators, is presented. A systematic study of the tree-level unitarity of these theories is developed and the agreement of their linearized versions with Newton's law is investigated by computing the corresponding effective nonrelativistic potential. Three-dimensional quadratic gravity with a gravitational Chern-Simons term is also analyzed. A discussion on the issue of light bending within the framework of both D-dimensional quadratic gravity and three-dimensional quadratic gravity with a Chern-Simons term is provided as well. Using the U(4) hybrid formalism, manifestly N = (2,2) worldsheet supersymmetric sigma models are constructed for the type-IIB superstring in Ramond-Ramond backgrounds. The Kahler potential in these N = 2 sigma models depends on four chiral and antichiral bosonic superfields and two chiral and antichiral fermionic superfields. When the Kahler potential is quadratic, the model is a free conformal field theory which describes a flat ten-dimensional target space with Ramond-Ramond flux and non-constant dilaton. For more general Kahler potentials, the model describes curved target spaces with Ramond-Ramond flux that are not plane-wave backgrounds. Ricci-flatness of the Kahler metric implies the on-shell conditions for the background up to the usual four-loop conformal anomaly.

Cooper pairing in two dimensions is analyzed with a set of renormalized equations to determine its binding energy for any fermion number density and all coupling assuming a,generic pairwise residual interfermion interaction. Also considered are Cooper pairs (CP's) with nonzero center-of-mass momentum (CMM) and their binding energy is expanded analytically in powers of the CMM up to quadratic terms. A Fermi-sea-dependent linear term in the CMM dominates the pair excitation energy in weak coupling (also called the BCS regime) while the more familiar quadratic term prevails in strong coupling (the Bose regime). The crossover, though strictly unrelated to BCS theory per se, is studied numerically as it is expected to play a central role in a model of superconductivity as a Bose-Einstein condensation of CPs where the transition temperature vanishes for all dimensionality d less than or equal to 2 for quadratic dispersion, but is nonzero for all d greater than or equal to 1 for linear dispersion.

An algorithm for computing the propagator for three-dimensional quadratic gravity with a gravitational Chern-Simons term, based on an extension of the three-dimensional Barnes-Rivers operators, is proposed. A systematic study of the tree-level unitarity of this theory is developed and its agreement with Newton's law is investigated by computing the effective nonrelativistic potential. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in two dimensions (2D) (e.g., to describe the quasi-2D cuprates) is suggested as the possible mechanism widely believed to underlie superconductivity in general. A crucial role is played by nonzero center-of-mass momentum Cooper pairs (CPs) usually neglected in BCS theory. Also vital is the unique linear dispersion relation appropriate to weakly-coupled bosonic CPs moving in the Fermi sea-rather than in vacuum where the dispersion would be quadratic but only for very strong coupling, and for which BEC is known to be impossible in 2D.

The problem of the classification of the extensions of the Virasoro algebra is discussed. It is shown that all H-reduced G(r)-current algebras belong to one of the following basic algebraic structures: local quadratic W-algebras, rational U-algebras, nonlocal W-algebras, nonlocal quadratic WV-algebras and rational nonlocal UV-algebras. The main new features of the quantum Ir-algebras and their heighest weight representations are demonstrated on the example of the quantum V-3((1,1))-algebra.

It is shown that, unlike Einstein's gravity, quadratic gravity produces dispersive photon propagation. The energy-dependent contribution to the deflection of photons passing by the Sun is computed and subsequently the angle at which the visible spectrum would be spread over is plotted as a function of the R-mu nu(2)-sector mass.

The Cooper pair binding energy vs. center-of-mass-momentum dispersion relation for Bose-Einstein condensation studies of superconductivity is found in two dimensions for a renormalized attractive delta interaction. It crosses over smoothly from a linear to a quadratic form as coupling varies from weak to strong.

We investigate a class of conformal nonabelian-Toda models representing noncompact SL(2, R)/U(1) parafermions (PF) interacting with specific abelian Toda theories and having a global U(1) symmetry. A systematic derivation of the conserved currents, their algebras, and the exact solution of these models are presented. An important property of this class of models is the affine SL(2, R)(q) algebra spanned by charges of the chiral and antichiral nonlocal currents and the U(1) charge. The classical (Poisson brackets) algebras of symmetries VG(n), of these models appear to be of mixed PF-WG(n) type. They contain together with the local quadratic terms specific for the W-n-algebras the nonlocal terms similar to the ones of the classical PF-algebra. The renormalization of the spins of the nonlocal currents is the main new feature of the quantum VA(n)-algebras. The quantum VA(2)-algebra and its degenerate representations are studied in detail. A statistical law for the multiplicities of the SU(3) irreps (lambda, mu) in the reduction of totally symmetric irreducible representations {m} of U(N), N = (eta + 1) (eta + 2)/2 with eta being the three-dimensional oscillator major shell quantum number, is derived in terms of the quadratic and cubic invariants of SU(3), by determining the first three terms of an asymptotic expansion for the multiplicities. To this end, the bivariate Edgeworth expansion known in statistics is used. Simple formulae, in terms of m and eta, for all the parameters in the expansion are derived. Numerical tests with large m and eta = 4, 5 and 6 show good agreement with the statistical formula for the SU(3) multiplicities.
