A method has been developed for the direct determination of As in sugar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with a transversely heated graphite atomizer (end-capped THGA) and longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction. The thermal behavior of As during the pyrolysis and atomization steps was investigated in sugar solutions containing 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 using Pd, Ni, and a mixture of Pd + Mg as the chemical modifiers. For a 60-muL sugar solution, an aliquot of 8% (m/v) in 0.2% (v/v)HNO3 was dispensed into a pre-heated graphite tube at 70 degreesC. Linear analytical curves were obtained in the 0.25 - 1.50-mug L-1 As range. Using 5 mug Pd and a first pyrolysis step at 600 degreesC assisted by air during 40 s, the formation of a large amount of carbonaceous residue inside the atomizer was avoided. The characteristic mass was calculated as 24 pg As and the lifetime of the graphite tube was around 280 firings. The limit of detection (L.O.D.) based on integrated absorbance was 0.08 mug L-1 (4.8 pg As) and the typical relative standard deviation (n = 12) was 7% for a sugar solution containing 0.5 mug L-1. Recoveries of As added to sugar samples varied from 86 to 98%. The accuracy was checked in the direct analysis of eight sugar samples. A paired t-test showed that the results were in agreement at the 95% confidence level with those obtained for acid-digested sugar samples by GFAAS.

The presence of trace basic organonitrogen compounds such as quinoline and pyridine in derivative petroleum fuels plays an important role in maintaining the engines of vehicles. However, these substances can contaminate the environment and so must be controlled because most of them are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. For these reasons, a reliable and sensitive method was developed for the determination of basic nitrogen compounds in fuel samples such as gasoline and diesel. This method utilizes preconcentration on an ion-exchange resin (Amberlyte IR - 120 H) followed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on a glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of quinoline and pyridine as studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that their reduction occurs via a reversible electron transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Very well resolved diffusion-controlled voltammetric peaks were obtained in dimethylformamide (DMF) with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAF(4) 0.1 mol L-1) for quinoline (-1.95 V) and pyridine (-2.52 V) vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat reference electrode. The proposed DPV method displayed a good linear response from 0.10 to 300 mg L-1 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.05 and 0.25 mu g L-1 for quinoline and pyridine, respectively. Using the method of standard additions, the simultaneous determination of quinoline and pyridine in gasoline samples yielded 25.0 +/- 0.3 and 33.0 +/- 0.7 mg L-1 and in diesel samples yielded 80.3 +/- 0.2 and 131 +/- 0.4 mg L-1, respectively. Spike recoveries were 94.4 +/- 0.3% and 10 +/- 0.5% for quinoline and pyridine, respectively, in the fuel determinations. This proposed method was also compared with UV-vis spectrophotometric measurements. Results obtained for the two methods agreed well based on F and t student's tests.

A method was developed using the multi-element graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry technique for the direct and simultaneous determination of As, Cu, and Pb in Brazilian sugar cane spirit (cachaqa) samples. Also employed was the end-capped transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) with platforms pre-treated with W permanent modifier and co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). Pyrolysis and atomization temperature curves were established in a cachaqa medium (1+1; v/v) containing 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 and spiked with 20 mu g L-1 As and Pb and 200 mu g L-1 Cu. The effect of the concentration of major elements usually present in cachaqa matrices (Ca, Mg, Na, and K) and ethanol on the absorbance of As, Cu, and Pb was investigated. Analytical working solutions of As, Cu, and Pb were prepared in 10% (v/v) ethanol plus 5.0 mg L-1 Ca, Mg, Na, and K. Acidified to 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, these solutions were suitable to build calibration curves by matrix matching. The proposed method was applied to the simultaneous determination of As, Cu, and Pb in commercial sugar cane spirits. The characteristic mass for the simultaneous determination was 16 pg As, 119 pg Cu, and 28 pg Pb. The pretreated tube lifetime was about 450 firings. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.6 mu g L-1 As, 9.2 mu g L-1 Cu, and 0.3 pig L-1 Pb. The found concentrations varied from 0.81 to 4.28 mu g L-1 As, 0.28 to 3.82 mg L-1 Cu and 0.82 to 518 mu g L-1 Pb. The recoveries of the spiked samples varied from 94-112% (As), 97-111% (Cu), and 95-101% (Pb). The relative standard deviation (n=12) was 6.9%, 7.4%, and 7.7% for As, Cu, and Pb, respectively, present in a sample at 0.87 mu g L-1, 0.81 mg L-1, and 38.9 mu g L-1 concentrations.

The characteristics, performance, and application of a novel and simple electrode, namely Pt vertical bar Hg vertical bar Hg-2(MF)(2)vertical bar Graphite, where MF stands for mefenamate ion, are described. This electrode responds to MF with sensitivity of (58.9 +/- 0.7) mV decade(-1) over the range 1.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-2) mol L-1 at pH 6.0-9.0 and a detection limit of 6.2 x 10(-7) mol L-1. The electrode is easily constructed at a relatively low cost with fast response time (within 10-25 s) and can be used for a period of 4 months without significant change in its performance characteristics. The proposed sensor displayed good selectivity for mefenamate in the presence of several substances, especially concerning carboxylate and inorganic anions. The potentiometric sensor was successfully applied to the determination of mefenamic acid in pharmaceuticals and human serum samples. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A quantum treatment for nonlocal factorizable potentials is presented in which the Weyl-Wiper quantum phase space description plays an essential role. The nonlocality is treated in an approximated form and allows for a Feynman propagator that can be handled in standard way. The semi-classical limit of the propagator is obtained which permits the calculation of the transmission factor in quantum tunnelling processes. An application in nuclear physics is also discussed.

Cefaclor is not reducible at a mercury electrode, but it can be determined polarographically and by cathodic stripping voltammetry as its initial alkaline degradation product which is obtained in high yield by hydrolysis of cefaclor in Britton-Robinson (B-R) buffer pH 10 at 50 degrees C for 30 min (reduction peak at pH 10, -0.70 V). Differential pulse polarographic calibration graphs are linear up to at least 1 x 10(-4) mol l(-1). Recoveries of 93% of the cefaclor (n = 3) were obtained from urine spiked with 38.6 mu g ml(-1) using this polarographic method with 1 ml urine made up to 10 ml with pH 10 buffer. Using cathodic stripping voltammetry and accumulating at a hanging mercury drop electrode at -0.2 V for 30 s, linear calibration graphs were obtained from 0.35 to 40 mu g ml(-1) cefaclor in B-R buffer pH 10. A relative standard deviation of 4.2% (eta = 5) was obtained, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 2.9 ng ml(-1). Direct determination of cefaclor in human urine (1 ml of urine was made up to 10 ml with pH 10 buffer) spiked to 0.39 mu g ml(-1) was made (recovery 98.6%). (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Despite the great importance of ion transport, most of the widely accepted models and theories are valid only in the not very practical limit of low concentrations. Aiming to extend the range of applicability to moderate concentrations, a number of modified models and equations (some approximate, some fundamented on different assumptions, and some just empirical) have been reported. In this work, a general treatment for the electrical conductivity of ionic solutions has been developed, considering the electrical conductivity as a transport phenomenon governed by dissipation and feedback. A general expression for the dependence of the specific conductivity on the solution viscosity (and indirectly on concentration), from which the whole conductivity curve can be obtained, has been derived. The validity of this general approach is demonstrated with experimental results taken from the literature for aqueous and nonaqueous solutions of electrolytes.

The routine methods for detecting Listeria sp. in foods are time consuming and involve using selective enrichments and plating on agars. In this study, the presence of Listeria sp. in 120 meat and meat product samples was investigated by two rapid immunoassays (TECRA Listeria Visual Immunoassay [VIA] and BioControl Visual Immunoprecipitate Assay [VIP] for Listeria) and a cultural procedure. The cultural method of detecting Listeria sp. followed Canada's Health Protection Branch Method, and the rapid tests followed the manufacturers' instructions. The agreement between the cultural and the rapid tests was established at a confidence limit of 95%. Seventy-nine samples (65.8%) were Listeria sp. positive in at least one of the three tests. There was no statistically significant difference between the cultural procedure and any of the rapid immunoassays. The agreement rates between the VIA and the cultural method and between the VIP and the cultural method were 87 and 84%, respectively. Both tests - the VIA and VIP - proved to be rapid, efficient and easy to perform.

The presence of trace neutral organonitrogen compounds as carbazole and indole in derivative petroleum fuels plays an important role in the car's engine maintenance. In addition, these substances contribute to the environmental contamination and their control is necessary because most of them are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. For those reasons, a reliable and sensitive method was proposed for the determination of neutral nitrogen compounds in fuel samples, such as gasoline and diesel using preconcentration with modified silica gel (Merck 70-230 mesh ASTM) followed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique on a glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of carbazole and indole studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that their reduction occurs via a reversible electron transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Very well resolved diffusion controlled voltammetric peaks were obtained in dimethylformamide (DMF) with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAF(4) 0.1 mol L-1) for indole (-2.27 V) and carbazole (-2.67 V) versus Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat reference electrode. The proposed DPV method showed a good linear response range from 0.10 to 300 mg L-1 and a limit of detection (L.O.D) of 7.48 and 2.66 mu g L-1 for indole and carbazole, respectively. The results showed that simultaneous determination of indole and carbazole presents in spiked gasoline samples were 15.8 +/- 0.3 and 64.6 +/- 0.9 mg L-1 and in spiked diesel samples were 9.29 +/- 1 and 142 +/- 1 mg L-1, respectively. The recovery was evaluated and the results shown the values of 88.9 +/- 0.4 and 90.2 +/- 0.8% for carbazole and indole in fuel determinations. The proposed method was also compared with UV-vis spectrophotometric measures and the results obtained for the two methods were in good agreement according to the F and t Student's tests. Bismuth was evaluated as an internal standard for the direct determination of Pb in vinegar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using Ru as a permanent modifier with co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). The correlation coefficient of the graph plotted from the non-nalized absorbance signals of Bi versus Pb was r=0.989. Matrix effects were evaluated by analyzing the slope ratios between the analytical curve, and analytical curves obtained from Pb additions in red and white wine vinegar obtained from reference solutions prepared in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, samples. The calculated ratios were around 1.04 and 1.02 for analytical curves established applying an internal standard and 1.3 and 1.5 for analvtical curves without. Analytical curves in the 2.5-15 pg L-1 Pb concentration interval were established using the ratio Pb absorbance to Bi absorbance versus analvte concentration, and typical linear correlations of r=0.999 were obtained. The proposed method was applied for direct determination of Pb in 18 commercial vinegar samples and the Pb concentration varied from 2.6 to 31 pg L-1. Results were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t-test) with those obtained for digested samples. Recoveries of Pb added to vinegars varied from 96 to 108% with and from 72 to 86% without an internal standard. Two water standard reference materials diluted in vinegar sample were also analyzed and results were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Pb and the useful lifetime of the tube was around 1600 firings. The limit of detection was 0.3 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviation was <= 3.8% and <= 8.3% (n = 12) for a sample containing, 10 mu L-1 Pb with and without internal standard, respectively. Flow injection amperometric detection of ascorbic acid using a Prussian Blue film-modified electrode
Resumo:
The PB film-modified electrode was used as an amperometric detector for flow injection analysis of ascorbic acid. The modified electrode detector showed good sensitivity, stability and reproducibility. The calibration curve for ascorbic acid was linear over the concentration range from 5.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-3) mol l(-1) with a slope of 19.9 mA mol(-1) per litre and a correlation coefficient of 0.999. The detection limit of this method was 2.49 x 10(-6) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation of six replicate injections of 2.5 x 10(-4) mol l(-1) ascorbic acid was 2.5%. The results obtained for ascorbic acid determination in pharmaceutical products are in good agreement with those obtained by using the procedure involving the reaction between triiodide and ascorbic acid. Diode-pumped Yb-doped glass lasers have received considerable attention for applications such as high-power beam production or femtosecond pulses generation. In this paper, we evaluate the laser potential of three different glass families doped with Yb3+ : alkali lead fluorborate (PbO-PbF2-B2O3), heavy metal oxide (Bi2O3-PbO-Ga2O3) and niobium tellurite (TeO2-Nb2O5-K2O-Li2O). Spectroscopic properties were studied for the samples and calculations of the minimum laser pump intensity (I-min), saturation fluence (U-sat) and the theoretical limit of peak power (P-max) are also presented. A comparison of laser properties of these three different glasses and their importance is shown and analyzed. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The characteristics, performance, and application of an electrode, namely Pt| Hg|Hg-2(DCF)(2)|graphite, where DCF stands for diclofenac ion, are described. This electrode responds to diclofenac with sensitivity of (58.1 +/- 0.8) mV/decade over the range 5.0 x 10(-5) to 1.0 x 10(-2) Mol l(-1) at pH 6.5-9.0 and a detection limit of 3.2 x 10(-5) mol l(-1). The electrode is easily constructed at a relatively low cost with fast response time (within 10-30 s) and can be used for a period of 5 months without any considerable divergence in potentials. The proposed sensor displayed good selectivity for diclofenac in the presence of several substances, especially concerning carboxylate and inorganic anions. It was used to determine diclofenac in pharmaceutical preparations by means of the standard additions method. The analytical results obtained by using this electrode are in good agreement with those given by the United States Pharmacopeia procedures. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this brief article we discuss spin-polarization operators and spin-polarization states of 2 + 1 massive Dirac fermions and find a convenient representation by the help of 4-spinors for their description. We stress that in particular the use of such a representation allows us to introduce the conserved covariant spin operator in the 2 + 1 field theory. Another advantage of this representation is related to the pseudoclassical limit of the theory. Indeed, quantization of the pseudoclassical model of a spinning particle in 2 + 1 dimensions leads to the 4-spinor representation as the adequate realization of the operator algebra, where the corresponding operator of a first-class constraint, which cannot be gauged out by imposing the gauge condition, is just the covariant operator previously introduced in the quantum theory.

A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of acetaldehyde in fuel ethanol was developed. Acetaldehyde was derivatized with 0.900 mL 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPHi) reagent and 50 mu L phosphoric acid 1 mol L-1 at a controlled room temperature of 15 degrees C for 20 min. The separation of acetaldehyde- DNPH (ADNPH) was carried out on a Shimadzu Shim-pack C-18 column, using methanol/LiCl(aq) 1.0 mM (80/20, v/v) as a mobile phase under isocratic elution and UV-Vis detection at 365 nm. The standard curve of ADNPH was linear in the range 3-300 amg L-1 per injection (20 mu L) and the limit of detection (LOD) for acetaldehyde was 2.03 mu g L-1, with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.999 and a precision (relative standard deviation, RSD) of 5.6% (n=5). Recovery studies were performed by fortifying fuel samples with acetaldehyde at various concentrations and the results were in the range 98.7-102%, with a coefficient of variation (CV) from 0.2% to 7.2%. Several fuel samples collected from various gas stations were analyzed and the method was successfully applied to the analysis of acetaldehyde in fuel ethanol samples.
