PbZr0.3Ti0.7O3 (PZT) films were produced by polymeric precursor route and deposited by spin-coater technique on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. The films were heat-treated using different furnaces: (a) a conventional furnace, at 700 degrees C; and (b) a domestic microwave oven, at 600 degrees C. The X-ray patterns revealed that both films are single phase and reflections were identified as belongs to the PZT phase. The intensity of these reflections showed a (111), (001) and (100) preferred orientation. Morphological and electrical characterizations showed that all samples present a rather different microstructure and both with high spontaneous polarization.

Lanthanum doped bismuth titanate thin films (Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12-BLT) were produced by the polymeric precursor method and crystallized in a domestic microwave oven and in conventional furnace. Using platinum coated silicon substrates configuration, ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a coercive field E-c of 3.9 mu C/cm(2) and 70 kV/cm for the film annealed in the microwave oven and 20 mu C/cm(2) and 52 kV/cm for the film annealed in conventional furnace, respectively. The films annealed in conventional furnace exhibited excellent retention-free characteristics at low infant periods indicating that BLT thin films can be a promise material for use in nonvolatile memories. on the other hand, the pinning of domains wall causes a strong decay at low infant periods for the films annealed in the microwave furnace which makes undesireable the application for future FeRAMS memories. Microwave synthesis of calcium bismuth niobate thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method
Resumo:
The crystal structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of layered perovskite calcium bismuth niobate thin films (CaBi2Nb2O9-CBN) deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method have been investigated. The films were crystallized in a domestic microwave and in a conventional furnace. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analysis confirms that the crystallinity and morphology of the films are affected by the different annealing routes. Ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a drive voltage V-c of 4.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.7 V for the film annealed in the conventional furnace and 1.0 mu C/cm(2) and 4.0 V for the film annealed in microwave furnace, respectively. A slight decay after 10(8) polarization cycles was observed for the films annealed in the microwave furnace indicating a reduction of the domain wall mobility after interaction of the microwave energy with the bottom electrode. Surface modifications have been applied in endosteal bone devices in order to improve the osseointegration through direct contact between neoformed bone and the implant without an intervening soft tissue layer. Surface characteristics of titanium implants have been modified by addictive methods, such as metallic titanium, titanium oxide and hydroxyapatite powder plasma spray, as well as by subtractive methods, such as acid etching, acid etching associated with sandblasting by either AlO2 or TiO2, and recently by laser ablation. Surface modification for dental and medical implants can be obtained by using laser irradiation technique where its parameters like repetition rate, pulse energy, scanning speed and fluency must be taken into accounting to the appropriate surface topography. Surfaces of commercially pure Ti (cpTi) were modified by laser Nd:YVO4 in nine different parameters configurations, all under normal atmosphere. The samples were characterized by SEM and XRD refined by Rietveld method. The crystalline phases alpha Ti, beta Ti, Ti6O, Ti3O and TiO were formed by the melting and fast cooling processes during irradiation. The resulting phases on the irradiated surface were correlated with the laser beam parameters: the aim of the present work was to control titanium oxides formations in order to improve implants osseointegration by using a laser irradiation technique which is of great importance to biomaterial devices due to being a clean and reproducible process. The degradation of the antibiotic tetracycline (TC) by the photo-Fenton process was evaluated under black-light and solar irradiation. The influences of iron source (Fe(NO3)(3) or ferrioxalate), hydrogen peroxide and matrix (pure water, surface water and a sewage treatment plant effluent-STP) were evaluated. Under black-light irradiation, TC degradation was favored in the presence of Fe(NO3)(3), achieving total degradation after 1 min irradiation, while under solar light the use of ferrioxalate favors the degradation. Nevertheless, no significant difference in total organic carbon removal was observed between these two iron sources, achieving a residual concentration of around 5 mg L-1 under black-light and 2 mg L-1 under solar light irradiation. No decrease of the degradation efficiency relative to pure water was observed when TC was irradiated in a sample of surface water, under either black-light or solar irradiation. However, lower efficiency was obtained under black-light when TC was present in a sample of STP effluent, indicating the interference of the constituents of this sample on the overall efficiency of the process. on the other hand, under solar irradiation in the presence of ferrioxalate, no influence of the matrix was observed, even in the sample of STP effluent, achieving total degradation of TC in 1.5 min. 1-Benzoyl-3-benzylguanidine and 1-benzoyl-3-benzyl-O-ethylisourea were synthesized in good yields (68 and 76%, respectively) from 1-benzoyl-3-benzylthiourea and benzoyl-ethylthiocarbamate in dry media conditions using KF-Al2O3 under microwave irradiation. Strong nucleophilic amines promoted the sulfur elimination by attack on the thiocarbonyl group in both thiourea and thiocarbamates to afford guanidines and isourea, respectively. Transesterification products were obtained from p-TsOH catalyzed reaction of thiocarbamate with alcohols under MW-solvent-free conditions. Very important non-purely thermal MW specific effects were evidenced and attributed to stabilization by coulombic interactions between materials and waves. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cerium carbonate hydroxide (orthorhombic Ce(OH)CO3) hexagonal-shaped microplates were synthesized by a simple and fast microwave-hydrothermal method at 150 degrees C for 30 min. Cerium nitrate, urea and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide were used as precursors. Ceria (cubic CeO2) rhombus-shape was obtained by a thermal decomposition oxidation process at 500 degrees C for 1 h using as- synthesized Ce(OH)CO3. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. The use of microwave-hydrothermal method allowed to obtain cerium compounds at low temperature and shorter time compared to other synthesis methods. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Surface morphology changes induced by argon laser irradiation (514 nm) on disperse red 13 (DR13) films prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD) were investigated. Atomic force microscopy was used to characterize the irradiated sample for different periods of irradiation. Needle-shape structures are observed which are attributed to the symmetry of DR13 molecules. The film becomes increasingly closely packed with the irradiation, with lower root mean square roughness for long exposure times. This is due to photoisomerization of DR13 molecules and probably heating of the sample, which can provide the required mobility for the molecular rearrangement. The rearrangement is such that voids in the film are filled in upon irradiating the sample, thus decreasing the film roughness and increasing the packing.

Mn(II) doped SnO2 thin films used for shielding fluoride glasses against corrosion were investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANE)S at the Sn and Mn K-edges. The effect of firing treatment on the densification of the films was studied. It has been evidenced a partial change of Mn valence from 2.3 to 2.6 upon heating which is attributed to a change of ratios of two Mn sites: grafted divalent Mn ions at the surface of SnO 2 nanocrystallites and trivalent Mn ions embedded into a substitutional solid solution with Sn. © Physica Scripta 2005.
