Transparent glass ceramics have been prepared in the Ga2S3-GeS2-CsCI pseudoternary system appropriate heat treatment time and temperature. In situ X-ray diffraction at the heat treatment temperature and Cs-133 and Ga-71 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance have been performed in function of annealing time to understand the crystallization process. Both techniques have evidenced the nucleating agent role played by gallium with the formation of Ga2S3 nanocrystals. on the other hand, cesium is incorporated very much later into the crystallites during the ceramization. Moreover, the addition of CsCl, which is readily integrated into the glassy network, permits us to shift the optical band gap toward shorter wavelength. Thus, new glass ceramics transmitting in the whole visible range up to 11.5 mu m have been Successfully synthesized from the (Ga2S3)(35)-(GeS2)(25)-CsCl40 base glass composition.

Synthesis and characterization of a new Pt(II)-mimosine complex are described. Elemental, mass spectrometry and thermal analyses for the complex are consistent with the formula [PtCl2(C8H10N2O4)]center dot 1.5H(2)O. C-13 NMR, N-15 NMR and infrared spectroscopy indicate coordination of the ligand to Pt(II) through the N and O atoms in a square-planar geometry. The final residue after thermal treatment was identified as metallic Pt. The complex is soluble in dimethylsulfoxide.

Kinetics of short-range ordering (SRO) in Ag with 21, 23 and 28 at% Zn is investigated by residual resistometry during isochronal and isothermal heat treatment for different states of post-deformation defect annealing after cold-rolling to about 30 and 60% thickness reduction. Resistivity changes due to pure ordering can be separated from the as-measured total resistivity change which includes defect annealing. Although the initial state of SRO of the as-rolled material can be estimated to be comparably low, for as-rolled and partially annealed states by appropriate thermal treatment evolution of SRO is achieved which corresponds quite well to that of recrystallized samples. It is observed, however, that quenched-in surplus vacancies contribute considerably to the ordering process for the recrystallized state and that this contribution is still increased by the grain growth during the final stage of annealing. It therefore turns out that SRO-kinetics under equilibrium vacancy conditions can be better observed in a state of post-deformation annealing, for which deformation induced point defects are annealed-out, but a relatively high dislocation density is still present to act as a vacancy sink. The flat-panel-display's (FPD) market and demand for highly efficient and colored luminescent films have been growing quickly. In this work, thin films were obtained from Pechini's solution by dip-coating. The green films were thermally treated at 873 K in order to get ZnO:Eu 1 at% thin film. A Schott(R) glass plate hydrothermally treated was used as substrate. The films have a mosaic shaped feature that was observed by optical microscopy. That feature is a result of substrate thermal treatment. The film deposition decreases the substrate transmittance in the visible range. When the F-7(0) -->L-5(6) (392nm) Eu3+ transition is excited, it is possible to detect emission from D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions. The D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition is also observed by using ZnO excitation wavelengths indicating energy transfer from ZnO to Eu3+ ion. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. (USA). All rights reserved.

Monolithic silica xerogels doped with different concentrations of Er3+, Yb3+ and Al3+ were prepared by sol-gel route. Densification was achieved by thermal treatment in air at 950degreesC for 120 h with a heating rate of 0.1degreesC/min. We studied the luminescence properties of the I-4(13/2)-->I-4(15/2) emission band of Er3+ as a function of the Al/Er/Yb concentration and we paid particular attention to the alumina effects. Raman spectroscopy and Vis-NIR absorption were used to monitor the degree of densification of the glasses and the residual OH content.

The present work presents results on natural sintering of tin dioxide ceramics, prepared by a chemical route or by conventional mixing and containing manganese (X-Mn = Mn/(Mn + Sn)(atomic) with 0 less than or equal to X(Mn)less than or equal to 0.15). This cation, which is practically insoluble in SnO2 network, stays at the grain surface. During thermal treatment (500 degrees C less than or equal to T-s less than or equal to 1400 degrees C), as long as the manganese surface concentration is lower than a critical value, equal to 5.10(-6) mol m(-2), no densification takes place. As soon as this value is reached, densification and grain growth occur simultaneously. The shrinkage kinetics is fast and high rho/rho(t) values can be obtained (for example. rho/rho(t)=0.95 for T-s=1300 degrees C and X-Mn=0.004). The dependence between manganese content, manganese distribution, grain size and sintering behaviour is also discussed. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier B.V. Limited.

PZT thin films of composition Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 were prepared by a novel method from the suspension of nanocrystalline PZT powders. The powders were obtained by mechanochemical synthesis. Films were deposited on silicon (100) and platinum covered silicon substrates (Pt (111) /Ti/SiO2/Si) Using spin-on technique. Substrate type has influence on films crystallinity, orientation and can react with the films changing its phase composition. Films microstructure strongly depends on thermal treatment conditions due to phase and compositional changes of the films. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, indium tin oxide (ITO) films were prepared using a wet chemical route, the Pechini method. This consists of a polyesterification reaction between an alpha-hydroxicarboxylate complex (indium citrate and tin citrate) with a polyalcohol (ethylene glycol) followed by a post annealing at 500 degrees C. A 10 at.% of doping of Sn4+ ions into an In2O3 matrix was successfully achieved through this method. In order to characterize the structure, the morphology as well as the optical and electrical properties of the produced ITO films, they were analyzed using different experimental techniques. The obtained films are highly transparent, exhibiting transmittance of about 85% at 550 nm. They are crystalline with a preferred orientation of [222]. Microscopy discloses that the films are composed of grains of 30 nm average size and 0.63 nm RMS roughness. The films' measured resistivity, mobility and charge carrier concentration were 5.8 x 10(-3) Omega cm, 2.9 cm(2)/V s and -3.5 x 10(20)/cm(3), respectively. While the low mobility value can be related to the small grain size, the charge carrier concentration value can be explained in terms of the high oxygen concentration level resulting from the thermal treatment process performed in air. The experimental conditions are being refined to improve the electrical characteristics of the films while good optical, chemical, structural and morphological qualities already achieved are maintained.
