Electrical energy is present in the lives of all people and is extremely important that it be delivered to end users with plenty of quality, safety and low costs. The electric power substations are responsible for transmission and distribution of electricity generating sources to consumers, and with technological advances and the subsequent automation of same, the electricity began to be delivered with greater continuity and reliability. Protection systems in substations are largely responsible for making the electricity reaches the final consumer with quality, since their function is to prevent the spread of any type of failure occurred at any point of transmission to the load centers. These systems consist primarily by the current transformers and potential, by the protective relays and circuit breakers and switchgear. The processors send the necessary data to the relays and, if those detect any abnormality in the system, operate the opening command of the branch circuit breakers to isolate where the fault. Therefore, it is essential to better understand the operation of such equipment, as well as the overall system. This work aims to study the main substation equipment, current transformers and potential and, especially, protection relays, in order to obtain the advantages that automated systems can provide

The present work shows a coupling of electrical and gravitational fields through Cauchy-Riemann conditions for quaternions present in a previous paper [1]. It is also obtained an extended version of the Laplace-like equations for quaternions, now written in terms of both electric and gravitational fields.

Transmission expansion planning (TEP) is a classic problem in electric power systems. In current optimization models used to approach the TEP problem, new transmission lines and two-winding transformers are commonly used as the only candidate solutions. However, in practice, planners have resorted to non-conventional solutions such as network reconfiguration and/or repowering of existing network assets (lines or transformers). These types of non-conventional solutions are currently not included in the classic mathematical models of the TEP problem. This paper presents the modeling of necessary equations, using linear expressions, in order to include non-conventional candidate solutions in the disjunctive linear model of the TEP problem. The resulting model is a mixed integer linear programming problem, which guarantees convergence to the optimal solution by means of available classical optimization tools. The proposed model is implemented in the AMPL modeling language and is solved using CPLEX optimizer. The Garver test system, IEEE 24-busbar system, and a Colombian system are used to demonstrate that the utilization of non-conventional candidate solutions can reduce investment costs of the TEP problem. In this paper, to solve the reconfiguration problem of radial distribution systems a scatter search, which is a metaheuristic-based algorithm, is proposed. In the codification process of this algorithm a structure called node-depth representation is used. It then, via the operators and from the electrical power system point of view, results finding only radial topologies. In order to show the effectiveness, usefulness, and the efficiency of the proposed method, a commonly used test system, 135-bus, and a practical system, a part of Sao Paulo state's distribution network, 7052 bus, are conducted. Results confirm the efficiency of the proposed algorithm that can find high quality solutions satisfying all the physical and operational constraints of the problem.

A new mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to represent the plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) charging coordination problem in electrical distribution systems. The proposed model defines the optimal charging schedule for each division of the considered period of time that minimizes the total energy costs. Moreover, priority charging criteria is taken into account. The steady-state operation of the electrical distribution system, as well as the PEV batteries charging is mathematically represented; furthermore, constraints related to limits of voltage, current and power generation are included. The proposed mathematical model was applied in an electrical distribution system used in the specialized literature and the results show that the model can be used in the solution of the PEVs charging problem.

This paper presents a mixed-integer convex-optimization-based approach for optimum investment reactive power sources in transmission systems. Unlike some convex-optimization techniques for the reactive power planning solution, in the proposed approach the taps settings of under-load tap-changing of transformers are modeled as a mixed-integer linear set equations. Are also considered the continuous and discrete variables for the existing and new capacitive and reactive power sources. The problem is solved for three significant demand scenarios (low demand, average demand and peak demand). Numerical results are presented for the CIGRE-32 electric power system.
