This study evaluated the influence of microwave disinfection on the strength of intact and relined denture bases. Water sorption and solubility were also evaluated. A heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 550) was used to construct 4-mm-thick (n = 40) and 2-mm-thick (n = 160) denture bases. Denture bases (2mm) were relined with an autopolymerizing resin (Tokuso Rebase Fast, Ufi Gel Hard, Kooliner, or New Truliner). Specimens were divided into four groups (n = 10): without treatment, one or seven cycles of microwave disinfection (650 W for 6 min), and water storage at 37 degrees C for 7 days. Specimens were vertically loaded (5 mm/min) until failure. Disc-shaped specimens (50 min x 0.5 mm) were fabricated (n = 10) to evaluate water sorption and solubility. Data on maximum fracture load (N), deflection (%), and solubility (%) were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (alpha = 0.05). One cycle of microwave disinfection decreased the deflection at fracture and fracture energy of Tokuso Rebase Fast and New Truliner specimens. The strength of denture bases microwaved daily for 7 days was similar to the strength of those immersed in water for 7 days. Microwave disinfection increased the water sorption of all materials and affected the solubility of the reline materials. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In indicating the microwave irradiation for disinfecting dentures it is necessary to see how this procedure influences Candida albicans integrity and viability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of microwaves to inactivate C. albicans and damage cell membrane integrity. Two 200-ml C. albicans (ATCC 10231) suspensions were obtained. A sterile denture was placed in a beaker containing the Experimental (ES) or the Control suspension (CS). ES was microwaved at 650 W for 6 min. Suspensions were optically counted using methylene blue dye uptake as indicative of membrane-damaged cells; spread on Agar Sabouraud dextrose (ASD) for viability assay; or spectrophotometrically measured at 550 nm. Cell-free solutions were submitted to content analyses of protein (Bradford and Pyrogallol red methods); Ca++ (Cresolftaleine complexone method); DNA (spectrophotometer measurements at 260 nm) and K + (selective electrode technique). Data were analysed by Student's t- or Wilcoxon z-tests (α = 0.05). All ES cells demonstrated cell membrane damage. Viable cells were non-existent in the ES ASD plates. No significant difference in optical density between ES and CS was observed (P = 0.272). ES cells released significantly high protein (P < 0.001, Bradford; P = 0.005, Pyrogallol red), K+ (P < 0.001), Ca++ (P = 0.012) and DNA (P = 0.046) contents. Different types of laser have been widely studied for applicability in the oral health area. In the endodontic area, investigations with some types of laser have been conducted to establish safe parameters for clinical application in root canals. However, it has not been duly explained whether the temperature increase caused by laser irradiation could cause alteration in the temperature on the external surface of the root and, consequently, alterations in the cells of the periodontal ligament, causing resorption and even loss of the dental element. The proposal in this paper was to gauge the external root temperature in the apical and cervical regions of the roots of human teeth during root canal irradiation with Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and Er:YAG lasers using different parameters. The novel approach of this paper is the use of the technique of laser applications along the total length of the root canal with series of repetitive irradiation, however, using time of 1 s of irradiation associated with 1 s off to avoid cumulative thermal effects. Experimental results confirm the accuracy of the parameters and exposure regimen obtained. All the parameters used in this paper are acceptable from a clinical as well as a biological point of view. CaBi4Ti4O15 thin films were deposited by the polymeric precursor method and crystallized in a domestic microwave oven and conventional furnace. The films obtained for microwave energy are well-adhered, homogeneous and with good specularity, when treated at 700 degrees C for 10 min. The microstructure and the structure of the films can be tuned by adjusting the crystallization conditions. When microwave oven is employed, the films presented bigger grains with mean grain size around 80 nm. For comparison, films were also prepared by the conventional furnace at 700 degrees C for 2 h. In the present study. a spectrophotometric method for the determination of formaldehyde by using chromotropic acid was devised. in which the use of potentially hazardous and corrosive concentrated sulfuric acid was eliminated and advantageously C replaced by a mixture of H, concentrated H3PO4 and H2O2. The reaction between formaldehyde and chromotropic acid (CA) in a cone phosphoric acid medium was accelerate by irradiating the mixture with microwave energy for 35 s (1100 W), producing a violetred compound (lambda(max)=570 nm). Beer's Law is obeyed in a concentration range of 0.8-4.8 mg 1(-1) of formaldehyde with a good correlation coefficient (r = 0.9968). The proposed method was applied in the analysis of formaldehyde in commercial disinfectants. Recoveries were within 98.0-100.4%, with standard deviations ranging from 0.03 to 0.13%.
