The theory of vibronic transitions in rare earth compounds is re-examined in the light of a more reliable representation for the ligand field Hamiltonian than the crude electrostatic model. General expressions that take into account the relevant contributions from the forced electric dipole and dynamic coupling mechanisms are derived for the vibronic intensity parameters. These include additional terms, from charge and polarizability gradients, which have not been considered in previous work. Emphasis is given to the relative signs of these various contributions. Under certain approximations these expressions may be conveniently written in terms of accessible ligand field parameters. A comparison with experimental values for the compounds Cs2NaEuCl6 and LiEuF4 is made and satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment is found. A discussion is given on the sensitivity of the calculated intensities to the values of radial integrals, interconfigurational energy differences and ligand field parameters that may be used. Finally, the problem in which a vibronic and an electronic level are in resonance, or near resonance, is analyzed. Suitable expressions to describe the effects of the even-rank components of the vibronic Hamiltonian are obtained. It is found that, depending on the strength of the vibronic interaction and the resonance conditions, the admixture between these two levels may lead to intensities of nearly equal values. © 1995.

In this work we report on visible upconversion emission in Er 3+-, and Ho3+-doped PbGeO3-PbF 2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics under 980 nm infrared excitation. In erbium-doped vitroceramic samples, blue(410 ran), green(530, and 550 nm) and red(660 nm) emission signals were generated, which were identified as due to the 2H9/2, 2H 11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 transitions to the 4I15/2 ground-state, respectively. Intense red(650 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the 5F5 - 5I8 transition and very small blue(490 nm) and green(540 nm) signals assigned to the 5F 2,3 - 5I8 and 4S2, 5F4 - 5I8 transitions, respectively, were observed in the holmium-doped samples. The 540 nm is the dominant upconversion signal in Ho3+-doped vitroceramics under 850 nm excitation. The dependence of the upconversion processes upon pump power and doping concentration are also investigated, and the main routes for the upconversion excitation processes are also identified. The comparison of the upconversion process in transparent glass ceramics and the precursor glass was also examined and the results revealed that the former present higher upconversion efficiencies.

Lithium intercalation into double rare earth chromates was carried out. It was found that the compounds NaxLi1-xLa(CrO4)2 belong to the NaLa(CrO4)2 structural type and may be recommended as fast ionic conductors. At small values of x a third polymorphous modification of LiLa(CrO4)2 can be stabilized. Attempts to intercalate lithium into CsLa(CrO4)2 lead to collapse of the lamellar network with the formation of LaCrO4 and alkaline chromates. Ion exchange Li+/H+ data are consistent with these considerations. © 1994.

In this work we present results on the preparation of planar waveguides based on HfO2 and HfO2-SiO2. Stable sols containing europium and erbium doped HfO2 nanoparticles have been prepared and characterized. The nanosized sol was either deposited (spin-coating) on quartz substrates or embedded in (3-glycidoxipropil)trimethoxisilane (GPTS) used as a hybrid host for posterior deposition. The refractive index dispersion and luminescence characteristics were determined for the resulting HfO2 films. The optical parameters of the waveguides such as refractive index, thickness and propagation losses were measured for the hybrid composite. The planar waveguides present thickness of a few micra and support well confined propagating modes.

This work studied the influence of the rare earth (Ce3+ and Ce4+) elements concentration in polysiloxane flints deposited on copper by dip-coating process, and evaluated their resistance in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl medium. Classical electrochemistry techniques were used as open circuit potential, polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that by adding low concentration of Ce4+ ions, the coating prevents the electrolyte uptake any longer retarding the substrate degradation consequently. ©The Electrochemical Society.

The multiferroic behavior with ion modification using rare-earth cations on crystal structures, along with the insulating properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films was investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy. Rare-earth-substituted BFO films with chemical compositions of (Bi 1.00-xRExFe1.00O3 (x=0; 0.15), RE=La and Nd were fabricated on Pt (111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a chemical solution deposition technique. A crystalline phase of tetragonal BFO was obtained by heat treatment in ambient atmosphere at 500 °C for 2 h. Ion modification using La3+ and Nd3+ cations lowered the leakage current density of the BFO films at room temperature from approximately 10-6 down to 10-8 A/cm2. The observed improved magnetism of the Nd3+ substituted BFO thin films can be related to the plate-like morphology in a nanometer scale. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cm Oe. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The Bura do Itapira pua carbonatite is located in southern Brazil and belongs to the Cretaceous Ponta Grossa alkaline-carbonatitic province related to the opening of the South Atlantic. The carbonatite complex is emplaced in Proterozoic granites and is mainly composed of plutonic magnesio- to ferrocarbonatite, with smaller amounts of subvolcanic magnesiocarbonatite. Hydrothermal alteration of the carbonatite has led to the formation of quartz, apatite, fluorite, rue earth fluorocarbonates, barite and sulfides in variable proportions. Trace element data, delta(13)C and delta(18)O are presented here, with the aim of better understanding the geochemical nature of hydrothermal alteration related to rare earth elements (REE) mineralization. The non-overprinted plutonic carbonatite shows the lowest REE contents, and its primitive carbon and oxygen stable isotopic composition places it in the field of primary igneous carbonatites. Two types of hydrothermally overprinted plutonic carbonatites can be distinguished based on secondary minerals and geochemical composition. Type I contains mainly quartz, rare earth fluorocarbonates and apatite as hydrothermal secondary minerals, and has steep chondrite normalized REE patterns, with Sigma(REE+Y) of up to 3 wt.% (i.e., two orders of magnitude higher than in fresh plutonic samples). In contrast, the Type II overprint contains apatite, fluorite and barite as dominant hydrothermal minerals, and is characterized by heavy REE enrichment relative to the fresh samples, with flat chondrite normalized REE patterns. Carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios of Types I and II are elevated (delta(18)O + 8 to + 12 parts per thousand; delta(13)C - 6 to - 2 parts per thousand) relative to the fresh samples. Hydrothermally overprinted carbonatites exposed to weathering show even higher delta(18)O values (delta(18)O 13 to 25 parts per thousand) but no additional REE enrichment. The subvolcanic carbonatite has anomalously high delta(13)C of up to + 1 parts per thousand, which suggests crustal contamination through interaction with carbonate-bearing metasediments. Rare earth (RE) metals are essentials for the manufacturing of high-technology products. The separation of RE is complex and expensive; biosorption is an alternative to conventional processes. This work focuses on the biosorption of monocomponent and bicomponent solutions of lanthanum(III) and neodymium(III) in fixed-bed columns using Sargassum sp. biomass. The desorption of metals with HCl 0.10 mol L-1 from loaded biomass is also carried out with the objective of increasing the efficiency of metal separation. Simple models have been successfully used to model breakthrough curves (i.e., Thomas, Bohart-Adams, and Yoon-Nelson equations) for the biosorption of monocomponent solutions. From biosorption and desorption experiments in both monocomponent and bicomponent solutions, a slight selectivity of the biomass for Nd(III) over La(III) is observed. The experiments did not find an effective separation of the RE studied, but their results indicate a possible partition between the metals, which is the fundamental condition for separation perspectives. Nanoparticles of tin oxide, doped with Ce and Y, were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The structural variations of the tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by means of nitrogen physisorption, carbon dioxide chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized samples, undoped and doped with the rare earths, were used to promote the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The SnO2-based nanoparticles were shown to be active catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming. The surface properties, such as surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and catalytic activity/selectivity, were influenced by the rare earth doping of SnO2 and also by the annealing temperatures. Doping led to chemical and micro-structural variations at the surface of the SnO2 particles. Changes in the catalytic properties of the samples, such as selectivity toward ethylene, may be ascribed to different dopings and annealing temperatures.

Erbium L-3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements were performed on rare earth doped fluorosilicate and fluoroborate glasses and glass ceramics. The well known nucleating effects of erbium ions for the crystallization of cubic lead fluoride (based on x-ray diffraction measurements) and the fact that the rare earth ions are present in the crystalline phase (as indicated by Er3+ emission spectra) seem in contradiction with the present EXAFS analysis, which indicates a lack of medium range structural ordering around the Er3+ ions and suggests that the lead fluoride crystallization does not occur in the nearest neighbor distance of the rare earth ion. Molecular dynamics simulations of the devitrification process of a lead fluoride glass doped with Er3+ ions were performed, and results indicate that Er3+ ions lower the devitrification temperature of PbF2, in good agreement with the experimental results. The genuine role of Er3+ ions in the devitrification process of PbF2 has been investigated. Although Er3+ ions could indeed act as seeds for crystallization, as experiments suggest, molecular dynamics simulation results corroborate the experimental EXAFS observation that the devitrification does not occur at its nearest neighbor distance.
