This study investigated the effects of electrolytic treatment using Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA, 70%TiO2/30%RuO2) type electrodes in simulated wastewater containing aromatic amine n-phenyl-n'-1,3-dimethylbutyl-p-phenylenediamine (Flexzone 7P). A low direct current density of 0.025 A cm(-2) was applied for periods up to 60 minutes and a 52.6% decrease in Flexzone 7P concentration was observed. Ultraviolet-visible spectra, gas chromatography, toxicity and biodegradation tests were carried out with the aim of verifying the toxic by-products that were formed. Ultraviolet-visible spectra of simulated wastewater exhibited changes in the aromatic amine's molecular structure. Additionally, based on the S. cerevisiae toxicity test, it was observed that detoxification of the wastewater occurred after 15 minutes of electrolysis. It was also observed that five minutes of treatment were sufficient to improve the biodegradation rate, determined through the respirometric Bartha method.

Some dynamical properties for a dissipative time-dependent oval-shaped billiard are studied. The system is described in terms of a four-dimensional nonlinear mapping. Dissipation is introduced via inelastic collisions of the particle with the boundary, thus implying that the particle has a fractional loss of energy upon collision. The dissipation causes profound modifications in the dynamics of the particle as well as in the phase space of the non-dissipative system. In particular, inelastic collisions can be assumed as an efficient mechanism to suppress Fermi acceleration of the particle. The dissipation also creates attractors in the system, including chaotic. We show that a slightly modification of the intensity of the damping coefficient yields a drastic and sudden destruction of the chaotic attractor, thus leading the system to experience a boundary crisis. We have characterized such a boundary crisis via a collision of the chaotic attractor with its own basin of attraction and confirmed that inelastic collisions do indeed suppress Fermi acceleration in two-dimensional time-dependent billiards. Large N topological string dualities have led to a class of proposed open/ closed dualities for superstrings. In the topological string context, the worldsheet derivation of these dualities has already been given. In this paper we take the first step in deriving the full ten-dimensional superstring dualities by showing how the dualities arise on the superstring worldsheet at the level of F terms. As part of this derivation, we show for F-term computations that the hybrid formalism for the superstring is equivalent to a (c) over cap = 5 topological string in ten-dimensional spacetime. Using the (c) over cap = 5 description, we then show that the D brane boundary state for the ten-dimensional open superstring naturally emerges on the worldsheet of the closed superstring dual.

The isolation of three new triterpene saponins 3beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-alpha-L-2-O-acetylara-binopyranosylolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (2), 3beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-O-arabinopyranosylurs-12-en-28-oic acid (3), and 3beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D-O-galactopyranosylurs-12-en-28-oic acid (4) together with five known saponins and one flavonoid glycoside from the aqueous infusion of flex amara (Vellozo) Loes. leaves is reported. All structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including the concerted application of one-dimensional (H-1, TOCSY, C-13, and C-13 DEPT NMR) and two-dimensional NMR techniques (DQF-COSY, HSQC, and HMBC).

BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films were fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by using a polymeric precursor solution under appropriate crystallization conditions. The capacitance dependence on voltage is strongly nonlinear, confirming the ferroelectric properties of the films resulting from the domain switching. The leakage current density increases with annealing temperature. The polarization electric field curves could be obtained in BFO films annealed at 500 degrees C, free of secondary phases. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of films annealed at 500 degrees C indicated that the oxidation state of Fe was purely 3+, demonstrating that our films possess stable chemical configurations. This article examines the interplay between legitimacy and context as key determinants of public sector reform outcomes. Despite the importance of variables Such as legitimacy of public institutions, levels of civic morality and socio-economic realities, reform strategies often fail to take such contextual factors into account. The article examines, first, relevant literature both conceptual and empirical, including data from the World Values Survey project. It is argued that developing countries have distinctive characteristics which require particular reform strategies. The data analysed shows that in Latin American countries, there is no clear Correlation between confidence in public institutions and civic morality. Other empirical studies show that unemployment has a negative impact on the level of civic morality, while inequality engenders corruption. This suggests that poorer and socio-economically stratified countries face greater reform challenges owing to the lack of legitimacy of public institutions. The article concludes that reforms should focus on areas of governance that impact on poverty. This will in turn help produce more stable outcomes. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Characterization of a glucose- and solvent-tolerant extracellular tannase from Aspergillus phoenicis

Tannases have attracted wider attention because of their biotechnological potential, especially enzymes from filamentous fungi and other microorganisms. However, the biodiversity of these microorganisms has been poorly explored, and few strains were identified for tannase production and characterization. This article describes the production, purification and characterization of a glucose- and solvent-tolerant extracellular tannase from Aspergillus phoenicis. High enzymatic levels were obtained in Khanna medium containing tannic acid up to 72 h at 30 °C under 100 rpm. The purified enzyme with 65% of carbohydrate content had an apparent native molecular mass of 218 kDa with subunits of 120 kDa and 93 kDa and was stable at 50 °C for 1 h. Optima of temperature and pH were 60 °C and 5.0-6.5, respectively. The enzyme was not affected significantly by most ions, detergents and organic solvents. While glucose did not affect the tannase activity, the addition of a high concentration of gallic acid did. The Km values were 1.7 mM (tannic acid), 14.3 mM (methyl-gallate) and 0.6 mM (propyl-gallate). The enzyme was able to catalyze the transesterification reaction to produce propyl-gallate. All biochemical properties suggest the biotechnological potential of the glucose- and solvent-tolerant tannase from A. phoenicis. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In recent decades, xylanases have been used in many processing industries. This study describes the xylanase production by Penicillium glabrum using brewer's spent grain as substrate. Additionally, this is the first work that reports the purification and characterization of a xylanase using this agroindustrial waste. Optimal production was obtained when P. glabrum was grown in liquid medium in pH 5.5, at 25 °C, under stationary condition for six days. The xylanase from P. glabrum was purified to homogeneity by a rapid and inexpensive procedure, using ammonium sulfate fractionation and molecular exclusion chromatography. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed one band with estimated molecular mass of 18.36 kDa. The optimum activity was observed at 60 °C, in pH 3.0. The enzyme was very stable at 50 °C, and high pH stability was verified from pH 2.5 to 5.0. The ion Mn2+ and the reducing agents β-mercaptoethanol and DTT enhanced xylanase activity, while the ions Hg2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+ as well as the detergent SDS were strong inhibitors of the enzyme. The use of brewer's spent grain as substrate for xylanase production cannot only add value and decrease the amount of this waste but also reduce the xylanase production cost. © 2013 Adriana Knob et al.
