In this paper we explore the extent of exchange rate pass-through for the USA, UK and Japan using a post-Bretton Woods industry-level dataset. We investigate how different channels of exchange rate pass-through affect domestic and import prices. Our analysis is suggestive of two channels of transmission and we find considerable variation in the extent of pass-through across industries and countries.

We show that incorporating the effects of exchange rate pass-through into a model can help in obtaining superior forecasts of domestic, industry-level inflation. Our analysis is based on a multivariate system of domestic inflation, import prices and exchange rates that incorporates restrictions from economic theory. These are restrictions on the transmission channels of the exchange rate pass-through to domestic prices, and are presented as testable hypotheses that lead to model reduction. We provide the results of various tests, including causality and prior restrictions, which support the underlying economic arguments and the model we use. The forecasting results for our model suggest that it has a superior performance overall, jointly producing more accurate forecasts of domestic inflation.

Weirs are common structure to regulate discharge and flow control inwater conveyance channels and hydraulic structures. Labyrinth weirsconsidered one of economical and effective methods to increase the efficiency of weirs that crest length of weirs increase without a related increase in structure width. Therefore, flow discharge will be increased. Compared to use compound weir, there are some benefits including the simultaneous passage of floating materials such as wood, ice, etc. Also, sedimentations are pass through compound weir. The trapezoidal Labyrinth weir is one of the combined models. In present study 15 physical models that discussion effect changes sidewall angle of labyrinth weir on discharge coefficient of flow over and through the compound trapezoidal one cycle Labyrinth weir. Also, it is developed design curves with various shapes and configurations. The researchshowed here mainly objectives at determining the coefficient of discharge for flow-over trapezoidal labyrinth weir by performing tests at wide range of values of side wall angles (α) from 6° to 35° and compound linear weir to be compared.

The research was commenced to understand why patients submissively accept compliance in the nursing relationship. To understand this phenomenon, an anthropological perspective about nursing was sought through ethnographic processes, utilising The Ethnographic Research Cycle and The Developmental Research Sequence as detailed by James Spradley (1980). Ethnographic methods of fieldwork and participant observation were undertaken over a three month period in a district nursing service in a rural area of Victoria, Australia. There are three over arching aims. The first is to record information at risk of being lost, hence the ethnography is an archival record describing insiders' perspectives of nursing practice. Description brings into view broad contextual issues that shape nursing practice, the daily routines and cultural norms of nursing, whilst also giving voice to patients' experiences about being nursed. The early part of the thesis is descriptive of the mundanity of nursing practice and of being a patient as these interactions are of fundamental significance in giving meaning to people's lives. Secondly the inquiry seeks to capture the meaning patients attach to nursing. Further description continued to uncover perspectives of nursing that were layered to present an integrated whole that still acknowledges the integrity of individuals and structures that make up that whole. As the cultural picture gained detail, the expected norms of being a nurse and a patient became evident, revealing how culture gives shape to nursing and being nursed. Notions of time and space were found to be constructs of being a patient which shape the illness experience. They are not necessarily within a patient's control, nonetheless, there is a norm and deviation from this norm has consequences for patients. Thirdly, the ethnography conveys the expected behaviour for a person who becomes a patient, to make known the implicit meanings, norms of behaviour and unwritten rules that a patient needs to understand as they pass through various stages of the health care system. In conclusion, the ethnography consistently reveals the underlying conflict between what nurses believe they do and the meaning attached to the experience of being nursed. For example, some nurses practice with patients' values as central to practice; others believe they care, yet observation and patient conversations suggest that they do not. The ethnography revealed that society expects nurses to elicit and reinforce compliance. Similarly, the power of culture shapes the experience of patients as the desire to be accepted, as a personal need, and as a means of having their nursing needs met, means that patients will invariably be passively compliant. The consequence is that nurses have a dominant power differential over patients, therefore, if nursing is to continue to describe practice as humanistic and caring, they ought to actively seek to be aware of patients' values and be motivated to accept these as central to practice.

This article presents the numerical and experimental analysis of a dielectrophoretic-activated cell sorter (DACS), which is equipped with curved microelectrodes. Curved microelectrodes offer unique advantages, since they create strong dielectrophoretic (DEP) forces over the tips and maintain it over a large portion of their structure, as predicted by simulations. The performance of the system is assessed using yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cells as model organisms. The separation of the live and dead cells is demonstrated at different medium conductivities of 0.001 and 0.14 S/m, and the sorting performance was assessed using a second array of microelectrodes patterned downstream the microchannel. Further, microscopic cell counting analysis reveals that a single pass through the system yields a separating efficiency of ~80% at low medium conductivities and ~85% at high medium conductivities.

In this work, a series of aging treatments has been conducted on AA6111 alloy samples for various times at ambient temperature (so-called natural aging) and at temperatures between 60 and 180 °C (artificially aged). The time at artificial ageing was chosen such that samples with approximately the same yield stress were produced. The microstructures of these alloy samples have been carefully characterized using atom probe tomography together with advanced cluster-finding techniques in order to obtain quantitative information about the changes in distribution of both the solute clusters and early-stage precipitates that are formed. The size distribution of clusters has been mapped onto the glide plane and then the stress necessary for a dislocation to pass through the range of obstacles has been estimated using an areal glide model where the dislocation–obstacle interaction strength has been assumed to be related to the obstacle size on the glide plane. It is demonstrated that the contribution of cluster strengthening during artificial aging at higher temperatures is dominated by the high number density of small clusters (Guinier radius <1 nm), whereas the situation during room temperature natural aging is more complex.

Artists Description: Moving rooms and domestic objects pass through the interior of the translucent house as we peer into it. At night they softly emanate a glow much like the glow of a television in the living room. The animated space is choreographed and timed in its movement, broadcasting the contents of the house. There is an interplay between real object and virtual object: the house is made of transparent/translucent glass while the interior objects are virtual images on the screen; total internal reflection occurs so that the image can be seen from certain angles only; the glass is a medium which distorts the animated image, while the animated image permeates the glass with its colour, movement and glow.

A novel thermo-mechanical shrinking method is reported to fabricate a three dimensional (3D) stretchable and highly conductive micro-wrinkled reduced graphene oxide (MWrGO) supported on an elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. This 3D rGO architecture not only increases the specific area for more electrons to pass through but also bestows stretchability to the conductive pathway. The structural change of micro-wrinkles has been monitored by an in situ straining microscopy. The electrical conductivity of the samples remained fairly constant and stayed above 25 S/m under low deformation (no more than 30% strain) for up to 500 mechanical stretching-release cycles. Additionally, the MWrGO/PDMS composite can be stretched bi-axially because the shrinking process itself is isotropic. This MWrGO based stretchable composite with stable electrical properties and long life span could form a new platform of stretchable electronics.

Sarah Bernhardt (born Sara-Marie-Henriette Bernard, 1844-1923) is the most famous French actress of the late nineteenth century. Celebrated for her golden voice and for the sinuous flow of her slender figure on stage, she was also a theatre manager, author, sculptor, painter, and a clever businesswoman. She developed and nurtured global fame in an era when the popular press facilitated international renown. Print media as well as the emerging phonograph and film industries enabled Bernhardt to cultivate and develop her celebrity into the early twentieth century, appealing to new publics and audiences. During the First World War she became a French porte-parole for the Allied cause, appearing on stage and in a propaganda film, as well as in demonstrations and events in support of Allied troops across France and America. When Bernhardt died in 1923 at the age of 78, millions crowded the streets to watch her funeral cortège pass through Paris. This essay explores her achievements in her lifetime.

In the present study, the effect of nominal equivalent strain (between 0 and 1.2), deformation temperature (790– 750°C) and carbon content (0.06 – 0.35%C) was investigated on ferrite grain refinement through dynamic strain induced transformation (DSIT) in plain carbon steels in single pass rolling. The microstructural evolution of the transformation of austenite to ferrite has been evaluated through the thickness of the strip. The results showed a number of important microstructural features as a function of strain, which could be classified into three regions; no DSIT region, DSIT region, and ultrafine ferrite (UFF) grain region. Hence, two critical strains; dynamic strain induced transformation (εC, DSIT) and ultrafine ferrite formation (εC, UFF) were determined. These strains were increased significantly with an increase in carbon content. The critical strain for UFF formation reduced with decrease in deformation temperature. The UFF microstructure consisted of ultrafine, equiaxed ferrite grains (<2 μm) with very fine cementite particles. In the centre of the rolled strip, there was a conventional ferrite– pearlite microstructure, although ferrite grain refinement and the volume fraction of ferrite increased with increase in the nominal equivalent strain.

In the present study, wedge-shape samples were used to study the effect of strain induced transformation on the formation of ultrafine grained structures in steel by single pass rolling. The results showed two different transition strains for bainite formation and ultrafine ferrite (UFF) formation in the surface layer of strip at reductions of 40% and 70%, respectively, in a plain carbon steel. The bainitic microstructure formed by strain induced bainitic transformation during single pass rolling was also very fine. The evolution of UFF formation in the surface layer showed that ferrite coarsening is significantly reduced through strain induced transformation combined with rapid cooling in comparison with the centre of the strip. In the surface, the ferrite coarsening mostly occurred for intragranular nucleated grains (IG) rather than grain boundary (GB) ferrite grains. The results suggest that normal grain growth occurred during overall transformation in the GB ferrite grains. In the centre of the strip, there was significantly more coarsening of ferrite grains nucleated on the prior austenite grain boundaries.

A C–Mn–V steel was used to study ultrafine ferrite formation (1–3 μm) through dynamic strain-induced transformation (DSIT) using hot torsion experiments. A systematic study determined the critical strain for the start of DSIT (C,DSIT), although this may not lead to a fully ultrafine microstructure. Therefore, the strain to produce an ultrafine ferrite (UFF) as final microstructure (C,UFF) during deformation was also determined. In addition, the effect of thermomechanical parameters such as deformation temperature, prior austenite grain size, strain rate and cooling rate on C,DSIT and C,UFF has been evaluated. DSIT ferrite nucleated on prior austenite grain boundaries at an early stage of straining followed by intragranular nucleation at higher strains. The prior austenite grain size affected the distribution of DSIT ferrite nucleation sites at an early stage of transformation and the subsequent coarsening behaviour of the grain boundary and intragranular ferrite grains during post-deformation cooling. Also, C,DSIT and C,UFF increased with an increase in the prior austenite grain size and deformation temperature. The post-deformation cooling had a strong effect not only on C,UFF but also the UFF microstructure (i.e. final ferrite grain size and second phase characteristics).

A C-Mn-Nb-Ti steel was deformed by hot torsion to study ultrafine ferrite formation through dynamic strain-induced transformation (DSIT) in conjunction with air cooling. A systematic study was carried out first to evaluate the effect of deformation temperature and prior austenite grain size on the critical strain for ultrafine ferrite formation (ε C,UFF) through single-pass deformation. Then, multiple deformations in the nonrecrystallization region were used to study the effect of thermomechanical parameters (i.e., strain, deformation temperature, etc.) on ε C,UFF. The multiple deformations in the nonrecrystallization region significantly reduced ε C,UFF, although the total equivalent strain for a given thermomechanical condition was higher than that required in single-pass deformation. The current study on a Ni-30Fe austenitic model alloy revealed that laminar microband structures were the key intragranular defects in the austenite for nucleation of ferrite during the hot torsion test. The microbands were refined and overall misorientation angle distribution increased with a decrease in the deformation temperature for a given thermomechanical processing condition. For nonisothermal multipass deformation, there was some contribution to the formation of high-angle microband boundaries from strains at higher temperature, although the strains were not completely additive.
