We present an agent-oriented approach to the meeting scheduling problem and propose an incremental negotiation scheme that makes use of a hierarchical structure of an individual agent's working knowledge. First, we formalise the meeting scheduling problem in a multi-agent context, then elaborate on the design of a common agent architecture of all agents in the system. As a result, each agent becomes a modularised computing unit yet possesses high autonomy and robust interface with other agents. The system reserves the meeting participants' privacy since there are no agents with dominant roles, and agents can communicate at an abstract level in their hierarchical structures

In multi-agent systems, most of the time, an agent does not have complete information about the preferences and decision making processes of other agents. This prevents even the cooperative agents from making coordinated choices, purely due to their ignorance of what others want. To overcome this problem, traditional coordination methods rely heavily on inter-agent communication, and thus become very inefficient when communication is costly or simply not desirable (e.g. to preserve privacy). In this paper, we propose the use of learning to complement communication in acquiring knowledge about other agents. We augment the communication-intensive negotiating agent architecture with a learning module, implemented as a Bayesian classifier. This allows our agents to incrementally update models of other agents' preferences from past negotiations with them. Based on these models, the agents can make sound predictions about others' preferences, thus reducing the need for communication in their future interactions.

The paper describes the development of an integrated multi-agent online dispute resolution environment called IMODRE that was designed to assist parties involved in Australian family law disputes achieve legally fairer negotiated outcomes. The system extends our previous work in developing negotiation support systems Family_Winner and AssetDivider. In this environment one agent uses a Bayesian Belief Network expertly modeled with knowledge of the Australian Family Law domain to advise disputants of their Best Alternatives to Negotiated Agreements. Another agent incorporates the percentage split of marital property into an integrative bargaining process and applies heuristics and game theory to equitably distribute marital property assets and facilitate further trade-offs. We use this system to add greater fairness to Family property law negotiations.

This paper presents a new distributed multi-agent scheme for reactive power management in smart coordinated distribution networks with renewable energy sources (RESs) to enhance the dynamic voltage stability, which is mainly based on controlling distributed static synchronous compensators (DSTATCOMs). The proposed control scheme is incorporated in a multi-agent framework where the intelligent agents simultaneously coordinate with each other and represent various physical models to provide information and energy flow among different physical processes. The reactive power is estimated from the topology of distribution networks and with this information, necessary control actions are performed through the proposed proportional integral (PI) controller. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a 8-bus distribution network under various operating conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated through simulation results and these results are compared to that of conventional PI-based DSTATCOM control scheme. From simulation results, it is found that the distributed MAS provides excellence performance for improving voltage profiles by managing reactive power in a smarter way.

In this paper, a distributed multi-agent scheme is presented for reactive power management with renewable energy sources (RESs). The multi-agent system (MAS) framework is developed for distribution systems to improve the stability which is mostly dominated by voltage and the agents in this framework coordinate among themselves using online information and energy flow. In this paper, the agents basically perform two tasks- reactive power estimation and necessary control actions. The topology of distribution network is used to estimate the required reactive power for maintaining voltage stability where distributed static synchronous compensators (DSTATCOMs) are used to supply this reactive power. The DSTATCOM is controlled by using a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller within the agent framework. The proposed scheme is further compared with the conventional approach to validate the simulation results.

This paper presents a distributed multi-agent scheme for enhancing the cyber security of smart grids which integrates computational resources, physical processes, and communication capabilities. Smart grid infrastructures are vulnerable to various cyber attacks and noises whose influences are significant for reliable and secure operations. A distributed agent-based framework is developed to investigate the interactions between physical processes and cyber activities where the attacks are considered as additive sensor fault signals and noises as randomly generated disturbance signals. A model of innovative physical process-oriented counter-measure and abnormal angle-state observer is designed for detection and mitigation against integrity attacks. Furthermore, this model helps to identify if the observation errors are caused either by attacks or noises.

This paper is concerned with leader-follower finite-time consensus control of multi-agent networks with input disturbances. Terminal sliding mode control scheme is used to design the distributed control law. A new terminal sliding mode surface is proposed to guarantee finite-time consensus under fixed topology, with the common assumption that the position and the velocity of the active leader is known to its neighbors only. By using the finite-time Lyapunov stability theorem, it is shown that if the directed graph of the network has a directed spanning tree, then the terminal sliding mode control law can guarantee finite-time consensus even under the assumption that the time-varying control input of the active leader is unknown to any follower.

In this paper, a neural network (NN)-based multi-agent classifier system (MACS) utilising the trust-negotiation-communication (TNC) reasoning model is proposed. A novel trust measurement method, based on the combination of Bayesian belief functions, is incorporated into the TNC model. The Fuzzy Min-Max (FMM) NN is used as learning agents in the MACS, and useful modifications of FMM are proposed so that it can be adopted for trust measurement. Besides, an auctioning procedure, based on the sealed bid method, is applied for the negotiation phase of the TNC model. Two benchmark data sets are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed MACS. The results obtained compare favourably with those from a number of machine learning methods. The applicability of the proposed MACS to two industrial sensor data fusion and classification tasks is also demonstrated, with the implications analysed and discussed.

Transient stability, an important issue to avoid the loss of synchronous operation in power systems, can be achieved through proper coordination and operation of protective devices within the critical clearing time (CCT). In view of this, the development of an intelligent decision support system is useful for providing better protection relay coordination. This paper presents an intelligent distributed agent-based scheme to enhance the transient stability of smart grids in light of CCT where a multi-agent framework (MAF) is developed and the agents are represented in such a way that they are equipped with protection relays (PRs). In addition to this, an algorithm is developed which assists the agents to make autonomous decision for controlling circuit breakers (CBs) independently. The proposed agents are responsible for the coordination of protection devices which is done through the precise detection and isolation of faults within the CCT. The agents also perform the duty of reclosing CBs after the clearance of faults. The performance of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a standard IEEE 39-bus test system by considering short-circuit faults at different locations under various load conditions. To further validate the suitability of the proposed scheme a benchmark 16-machine 68-bus power system is also considered. Simulation results show that MAF exhibits full flexibility to adapt the changes in system configurations and increase the stability margin for both test systems.

In this paper, an agent-based distributed control scheme is presented to control single-phase parallel inverters in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to microgrids. A communication assisted multi-agent framework is developed within microgrids where agents perform their tasks in a distributed manner with an aim of stabilizing load voltage and current under normal and faulted conditions through the asymptotic tracking of the reference current signal. The distributed agent-based control scheme requires information from the neighboring agents through communication network to decide control actions. The proposed control scheme utilizes Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) tuning approach to design proportional integral (PI) controllers for controlling inverters within the multi-agent system (MAS). A microgrid with parallel inverter-connected solar PV systems is considered for simulations under normal and faulted conditions where results show the excellency of the proposed agent-based scheme in comparison to the conventional scheme without MAS.

This paper presents a distributed multi-agent scheme to detect and identify cyber threats on the protection systems of power grids. The integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) into existing power grids builds critical cyberphysical energy systems CPESs) in which digital relays are networked cyber-physical components subject to various cyber threats. Cyber attacks on protection systems may mimic real faults, cause component failure, and disable the communication links. Agents utilize both cyber and physical properties to reinforce the detection technique and further distinguish cyber attacks from physical faults. This paper also introduces the problem of secure communicationprotocols and highlights the comparative studies for enhancing thesecurity of the protection systems. The proposed scheme is validatedusing a benchmark power system under various fault and cyber attack scenarios.

If a company or person wants to invest a lot of money, where, when, and how should the investment go? A multi-agent based Financial Investment Planner may give some reasonable answers to the above question. Good advice is mainly based on adequate information, rich knowledge, and great
skills to use knowledge and information. To this end, this planner consists of four principal components information gathering agents that are responsible for gathering relevant information on the Internet, data mining agents that are in charge of discovering knowledge from retrieved information as well as other relevant databases, group decision making agents that can effectively use available knowledge and appropriate information to make reasonable decisions (investment advice), and a graphical user interface that interacts with users. This paper is focused on the group decision making part. The design and implementation of an agent-based hybrid intelligent system - agent-based soft computing society are detailed.

In a multi-agent environment, there is often the need for an agent to cooperate with others so as to ensure that a given task is achieved timely and cost-effectively. Present agent systems currently maximizes this through mechanisms such as trust and risk assessments. In this paper, we extend this mechanism by introducing the concept of insurance, in which the insurance agents act as a bridge between agents who require resources from others. Unlike traditional systems, agents purchase insurance so as to guarantee to have the requested resources during the task execution time and thus minimize the risk in task failure. The novelty of this proposal is that it ensures agents continuously to exchange resources and to seek maximum expected utility in a dynamic environment at the same time. Our experimental results confirm the feasibility of our approach.
