Physical vapour deposition (PVD) titanium aluminium nitride coated cutting tools are used extensively in global manufacturing for reducing production costs and improving productivity in a number of aggressive metal-cutting operations, namely, dry and high-speed machining. In this investigation, the performance of Ti1−xAlxN and Ti1−x−yAlxCryN coatings was assessed on Co-HSS twist drills used to machine grey cast iron. The failure criterion for drills was defined as a critical sized flank wear land at the outer corners of the drills. Using this criterion, the average tool life of uncoated twist drills was increased by factors of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.0 by Ti0.59Al0.41N, Ti0.27Al0.19Cr0.54N and Ti0.21Al0.14Cr0.65N coatings, respectively. Notwithstanding the similar increase in average tool life, the Ti1−x−yAlxCryN coatings produced more consistent results than the Ti1−xAlxN coated drills with standard deviations of 67, 3 and 19 holes, respectively. This result has significant practical implications in manufacturing, since drills are not replaced on an individual basis, but rather on a preset tool change frequency. The present paper discusses the performance of Ti1−xAlxN and Ti1−x−yAlxCryN coated drills in terms of average and practical drill life and concludes with remarks on the characterisation of PVD coatings and their significance on the performance of Co-HSS twist drills when dry machining grey cast iron.

Supplements containing chromium in its trivalent oxidation state [Cr(III)] are used by diabetic patients to improve their glucose and insulin levels and omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for people with insulin resistance or diabetes. It seemed very useful to combine chromium(III) and omega-3 functional entities into single molecules. Here we synthesized and characterized a chromium cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) complex, one of the two main components of the heterogeneous chromium(III) fish oil omega-3 concentrate products. Ethyl cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoate was hydrolyzed with sodium hydroxide, and the generated salt was reacted in situ with chromium(III) chloride hexahydrate and converted into an oxo-centred trinuclear chromium(III) complex. A study of the DHA–chromium(III) complex by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry/(LC/MS/MS) is reported in this work. The data suggest a triaqua-μ3-oxohexakis-μ-docosahexaenoatotrichromium(1+), [Cr3O(C22H31O2)6(H2O)3]+, core structure.

Evaluates the current Australian Standard method (AS3853.1) for the determination of total hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in stainless steel welding fume. Investigates the extraction kinetics of this Cr(VI) into a range of media. Develops an analytical method for the determination of Cr(VI) in acidic extract solutions and investigates the extraction of Cr(VI) under simulated in vivo conditions.

Surface alloying via fluidised bed reactor (FBR) chemical vapour deposition (CVD) can be used to produce adherent and highly corrosion resistant surface layers. In this work, 304, 316, and 409 stainless steels and 1020 steel were chromised, producing distinct surface layers tens of micrometres thick. The composition and surface of these layers was characterised using microscopy, GDOES, and XPS. Surfaces were highly enriched in Cr and displayed improved corrosion resistance as determined by electrochemical evaluations. This work demonstrates that it is possible to form continuous, functional and corrosion resistant Cr-rich surface layers via FBR-CVD on a variety of steels.

Capsular polypyrrole hollow nanofibers (PPy-HNFs) were fabricated via in situ polymerization of pyrrole on an organic-inorganic template, followed by acid etching. Their application in removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) from aqueous solution was then investigated. The morphologies of the capsular PPy-HNFs were studied by both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed that the PPy-HNFs had a capsular structure in the walls of hollow nanofibers. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirmed the adsorption of Cr on capsular PPy-HNFs. The adsorption capacity increased with reduced pH of the initial solution and the adsorption process can be described using the pseudo-second-order model. These capsular PPy-HNFs showed a high Cr(vi) adsorption capacity up to 839.3 mg g-1. This adsorption capacity was largely retained even after five adsorption/desorption cycles. Electrostatic attraction between Cr and PPy-HNFs was studied using a proposed adsorption mechanism. The capsular PPy-HNFs formed a flexible membrane, which allowed easy handling during application. This study has demonstrated the possibilities of using this capsular PPy-HNF membrane for heavy metal removal from aqueous solution.

Metals are essential for the normal functioning of living organisms. Their uses in biological systems are varied, but are frequently associated with sites of critical protein function, such as zinc finger motifs and electron or oxygen carriers. These functions only require essential metals in minute amounts, hence they are termed trace metals. Other metals are, however, less beneficial, owing to their ability to promote a wide variety of eleterious health effects, including cancer. Metals such as arsenic, for example, an produce a variety of diseases ranging from keratosis of the palms and feet to cancers in multiple target organs. The nature and type of metal-induced pathologies appear to be dependent on the concentration, speciation, and length of exposure. Unfortunately, human contact with metals is an inescapable consequence of human life, with exposures occurring from both occupational and environmental sources. A uniform mechanism of action for all harmful metals is unlikely, if not implausible, given the diverse chemical properties of each metal. In this chapter we will review the mechanisms of carcinogenesis of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and nickel, the four known carcinogenic metals that are best understood. The key areas of speciation, bioavailability, and mechanisms of action are discussed with particular reference to the role of metals in alteration of gene expression and maintenance of genomic integrity.

The microstructural processes of Cr(N,C) coating formation by thermoreactive deposition and diffusion (TRD) on pre-nitrocarburised H13 tool steel were studied. Both nitrocarburising and TRD were performed in fluidized bed furnaces at 570 °C. During TRD, chromium was transferred from chromium powder in the fluidized bed, to the nitrocarburised substrates by gas-phase reactions initiated by reaction of HCl gas with the chromium. Addition of 30% H2 to the input inert gas was found to increase the rate of coating formation, although hydrogen reduction resulted in rapid loss of nitrogen to the surface. The reason for the increased rate of coating formation could not be established without further investigation, although several possible explanations have been proposed. It was found that porosity and the formation of an iron nitride ‘cover layer’ during nitrocarburising were the biggest influences on the microstructure of the Cr(N,C) coating. Microstructural characterization of the coatings was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES).

The concentrations of 12 trace metals were assessed in wild and cultured specimens of blacklip abalone, Haliotis rubra, from each of two sites, Geelong and Port Fairy, in Victoria, Australia. Cadmium, copper, iron and zinc were quantified in the foot muscle of specimens from all four populations but the concentrations of aluminium, arsenic, beryllium, chromium, lead, manganese, nickel and vanadium were below the detection limits of the instrumental techniques employed. When similar sized specimens from each population were compared, the concentrations of each of the quantifiable metals varied according to location. The Geelong wild population had the highest or equal highest concentrations of each metal. Metal concentrations in the wild populations were usually greater than or equal to the concentrations in the corresponding cultured population. The concentrations of the regulated essential elements, copper and zinc, decreased with an increase in abalone length whereas the concentrations of iron, manganese and cadmium were independent of length. Metal concentrations in H. rubra from all sites complied with the Australian Food Code and other standards of food safety.

A duplex surface treatment has been developed involving the pre-treatment of hardened and tempered AISI H13 chromium hot-work tool steel by a ferritic nitrocarburising process, and a subsequent treatment of the nitrocarburised surface by a low-temperature chromium thermo-reactive deposition process.  The process formed a thin and hard chromium carbonitride surface layer above a hardened diffusion zone, and the low processing temperature allowed the properties of the core material to be retained. It is expected this surface treatment will find application in the treatment  of tooling used for aluminium forming operations.

Australia is a water-stressed nation and demand on potable water supply is increasing. Consequently water conservation and reuse are increasingly becoming important. Irrigation of recycled wastewater on water repellent soils is a technology that is being trialled as a means of improving crop production and conserving potable supply. However, recycled water contains potentially harmful heavy metals. This paper reports the competitive sorption and desorption of several common heavy metals found in soils collected from a farm located in the south-east of South Australia. The soil from this location is severely water repellent, but some sites were amended with kaolinite clay (Si4Al4O10(OH)8) about 7 and 15 years ago. The metals studied were Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn. Competitive sorption of the metals was distinctly observed. For all heavy metals, the quantity of metal sorbed was higher in amended soil, and there was a strong correlation between the specific sorption to total sorption ratio and the amount of clay in the soil. The sorption intensities varied with metal, Cr, Pb, and Cu having a high sorption tendencies and Zn, Cd, and Ni having comparatively low sorption tendencies. The total sorption capacity for all metals increased in clay-treated soils compared with non-treated soils. On average, clay-amended water repellent soils had a 20–40% increased capacity to adsorb total metals; however, this increase was largely caused by the increased capacities to adsorb Zn, Cd, and Ni. The effect of clay treatment largely enhanced the sorption capacity of relatively weakly adsorbing heavy metals. The implications for using recycled wastewater on the long-term sustainable agro-environmental management of these soils are discussed.

Surface finish is an important factor in creating the durable metal components, and fatigue strength can be improved if compressive residual stresses are produced in the surface. Burnishing is a finishing process and compressive residual stresses are induced during the process. The present study of minimizing the surface roughness based on the experimental work, and finite element model was developed to evaluate the analytical results. Commercial purity Mild Steel and Aluminium were selected as work specimens and a high carbon high chromium roller was used as a tool for the burnishing process.

The aim of this project was to investigate the effects of oral contraceptives on the nutrient composition of breast milk. The design of the study also allowed the effects of stage of lactation and maternal diet on milk composition to be observed. A prospective study was designed to measure maternal dietary intake and vitamin and trace element concentration in milk and plasma. Vitamin A, ascorbic acid and iron, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, cobalt, chromium, rubidium and caesium were measured. Two groups of women participated, oral contraceptive users and controls. Fasting milk and blood samples and 24-hour food records were collected from the women once a week for 20 weeks commencing 3-8 weeks post-partum, and 1-2 weeks before they began to take oral contraceptives. Fifteen women participated in the study; 5 took progestogen-only oral contraceptives, 1 took an oestrogen-progestogen oral contraceptive and 9 acted as controls. Progestogen-only oral contraceptives did not affect the milk or plasma concentration of the vitamins and trace elements measured. As only 1 subject took an oestrogen-progestogen preparation no conclusion could be drawn as to its effect. The mean milk and plasma concentration of all nutrients studied did not change significantly with the progression of lactation, with the exception of iron and zinc. The mean milk iron concentration was significantly higher at 16 weeks post-partum than at 8 and 23 weeks post-partum. The mean milk zinc concentration was significantly lower at 23 weeks post-partum than at 8 and 16 weeks post-partum. The infants1 mean estimated daily intakes of ascorbic acid and vitamin A from breast milk were above the U.S. and British Recommended Dietary Allowance for those vitamins. However, their mean estimated intakes of iron, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium were well below the U.S. recommendations. Effects of the maternal dietary intake on milk and plasma composition were variable. Implications of these findings have been discussed.

A new duplex surface engineering process has been developed that involves the deposition of chromium on ferritic nitrocarburised steel surfaces at low temperatures. This process formed a thin and hard chromium carbonitride surface layer and is to be applied to hardened tooling used in metal forming operations for improved wear performance and die life.
