The protein quality and physico-functional properties of Australian sweet lupin protein concentrates, prepared by isoelectric precipitation or ultrafiltration, were assessed. The ultrafiltration process resulted in a higher yield of protein than did the isoelectric precipitation process. The lupin kernel and the two lupin protein concentrates had similar essential amino acid compositions that were inferior to ideal human requirements. True digestibilities of the isoelectrically precipitated (ISO) and the ultrafiltered (UF) lupin protein concentrates were similar but significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of casein. Net protein utilisations (NPU) of the ISO and UF protein concentrates were similar but significantly lower (P<0.05) than that of casein. The UF protein concentrate had higher protein solubility than did the ISO protein concentrate (P<0.05). Low foaming capacity, low viscosity, but high emulsification capacity (particularly at low pH) were observed for lupin protein concentrates.

The National Australia Bank’s (NAB) experience of corporate governance has been contrary to current standards of good corporate governance, accountability and risk management. Over the last few years NAB’s misadventures have brought it under intensive media scrutiny with the HomeSide losses and the investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission in the USA for breaches of auditor independence. More recently the unauthorised trading by its foreign exchange dealers violated NABs risk management practices and the subsequent board crisis resulted in significant downgrading of the share price on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). This paper briefly reviews the international history of corporate accountability and its growth in Australia. The increasing shareholder and legislative pressure to improve sustainability, accountability and board functionality have driven these issues to the forefront of Governing Boards’ agendas worldwide. The board remains ultimately responsible for all actions of the company and this is highlighted by APRA’s recent release of the new governance standard APG510 for implementation by October 2006. The impact of NAB’s board dysfunction on its overall performance is compared with the other major banks in Australia. Cost efficiency ratios, share price and total shareholder return are used as measures of performance and profitability. It is clear, from NAB’s recent experience, as the worst performer of all the majors, with a 19.7% fall in net profit and a cost to income ratio of 57.4% in 2004, that the NAB board needs to improve its performance and accountability to meet a sustainable increase in profitability and higher return for investors.

Manipulation of the composition of milkfat has the potential to improve the nutritional properties and physical functionality of milkfat and its acceptability in the market. The modifications that have been targeted from a nutritional perspective have included:
(a) reducing the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids;
(b) increasing the level of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids; and
(c) increasing the content of conjugated linoleic acid.
From a physical functionality viewpoint, the outcome targeted has been an improvement in the spreadability of butter by altering milkfat composition to reduce the hardness of milkfat. Both on-farm strategies and the application of appropriate post-farm processing technologies may be used to alter the milkfat composition to enhance its nutritional image and its physical functionality for a range of product applications. However, changes in milkfat composition that are desirable for a specific nutritional purpose or for one type of milk-based product may not meet all the desirable requirements of another milkfat or dairy product. Furthermore, modification of the milkfat composition can also have an influence on the processing characteristics of milk and the quality of finished dairy products. It is essential to substantiate the benefits of specific target nutritional or physical functionality outcomes before the introduction of breeding goals, altered milk production systems or post-farm processing operations to manipulate milkfat composition. This paper reviews the variation in milkfat characteristics and the strategies that have been used to modify milkfat composition to achieve milkfat with altered nutritional and physical functional properties.

This paper investigates the competing rationalities of scientific and lay epidemiology and how the tension between the two impacts on the efficacy of health promotion messages for injecting drug users (IDUs). It proposes that behaviours, which may be difficult to understand when viewed at an individual level, are, in fact, rational within particular cultural contexts. The study used qualitative semi-structured interviews with 60 heroin users. A number of different types of risk neutralisation were observed in this group of interviewees, including: scapegoating, self-confidence and risk comparison. Interviewees commonly used lay epidemiology to justify and rationalise their risk neutralisation strategies. The paper provides concrete examples of the ways in which this group of IDUs neutralise risk through the use of these strategies. The findings illustrate how many of the psychological constructs surrounding the perception of risk which focus on individual behaviour are fundamentally simplistic and often unhelpful in understanding the behaviours of this group of people. It is concluded that some ‘risk’ behaviours are often functional and rational within the context of prohibitionist drug policies which create an environment in which the IDU often has little real agency to reduce the risks associated with their drug use.

A novel approach to producing improved bio-interfaces by combining continuous wave (CW) and pulsed plasma polymerization (PP) modes is reported. This approach has enabled the generation of stable interfaces with a higher density of primary amine functionality on metal, ceramic and semiconductor surfaces. Heptylamine (HA) was used as the amine-precursor. In this new design, a thin CW PPHA layer is introduced to provide strong cross-linking and attachment to the metal or semiconductor surfaces and to provide a good foundation for better bonding a pulsed PPHA layer with high retention of functional groups. The combined mode provides the pulsed mode advantage of a 3-fold higher density of primary amines, while retaining much of the markedly higher stability in aqueous solutions of the continuous mode.

Excess dietary fat consumption is recognized as a strong contributing factor in the development of overweight and obesity. Understanding why some individuals are better than others at regulating fat intake will become increasingly important and emerging associative evidence implicates attenuated fatty acid sensing in both the oral cavity and gastrointestinal (GI) tract in the development of obesity. Functional implications of impaired fatty acid chemoreception include diminished activation of the gustatory system, the cephalic response and satiety. This review will focus on knowledge from animal and human studies supporting the existence of oral fatty acid chemoreception including putative oral detection mechanisms, and how sensitivity to fatty acids is associated with fat consumption and fatty food preference.

The objectives of this study were to examine the contribution of anxiety and fundamental emotions to perceived emotion functionality and evaluate the informational value of anxiety measures used in sport versus measures of fundamental emotions in terms of appraisal. A battery of questionnaires comprising the somatic and cognitive subscale of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), the State Anxiety Inventory, the Differential Emotions Scale–IV, a perceived functionality of emotions single item, and two items assessing challenge and threat appraisals was administered to 202 athletes competing in individual sports in the United Kingdom. They were tested on recalled pre-competitive emotions experienced before their best and worst competition ever and momentary emotions experienced one hour before an actual competition. In general, measures of fundamental emotions with clear approach or avoidance action tendencies were better predictors of emotion functionality than anxiety measures. Results also suggested that the CSAI-2 does not convey clear information about an athlete’s appraisal of a competition. Measures of negative and positive fundamental emotions with clear action tendencies were better indicators of athletes’ appraisal patterns. It was concluded that assessment of athletes’ emotional state should not be exclusively based on anxiety measures but should encompass or be replaced with measures of emotions conveying unambiguous information about the athlete-competition relationship.

This research intends to increase the photocatalytic efficiency of cotton fabrics coated with TiO2-based nanocomposites under illumination particularly visible light. The fabrics were functionalized using a low-temperature sol-gel method of TiO2/Metal/SiO2 nanocomposite systems. Integrating silica and noble metals into TiO2 sol was put forth for boosting its functionality. Three noble metals (gold (Au), platinum (Pt) and silver (Ag)) with four different concentrations were employed. The photocatalytic activity of the functionalized fabrics was assessed through coffee stain-removal test and photodecomposition of methylene blue (MB) under UV and visible light. The impact of coating layers on fabrics' hydrophilicity was analyzed through measuring the water contact angle as well as the water absorption time. The fabrics were characterized using XRD, SEM and EDS. It was corroborated that the presence of silica enhanced the self-stain-removal capability of fabrics under UV. Moreover, the self-cleaning property of fabrics improved under both UV and visible light after integrating the metals into the colloids. In the same line, the self-cleaning activity threshold of fabrics was shifted to visible region.

The performance of composite laminates depends on the adhesion between the fibre reinforcement and matrix, with the surface properties of the fibres playing a key role in determining the level of adhesion achieved. For this reason it is important to develop an in-depth understanding of the surface functionalities on the reinforcement fibres. In this work, multi-scale surface analysis of carbon fibre during the three stages of manufacture; carbonisation, electrolytic oxidation, and epoxy sizing was carried out. The surface topography was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed longitudinal ridges and striations along the fibre-axis for all fibre types. A small difference in surface roughness was observed by scanning probe microscopy (SPM), while the coefficient of friction measured by an automated single fibre tester showed 51% and 98% increase for the oxidised and sized fibres, respectively. The fibres were found to exhibit heterogeneity in surface energy as evidenced from SPM force measurements. The unsized fibres were much more energetically heterogeneous than the sized fibre. A good correlation was found between fibre properties (both physical and chemical) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites made from all three fibre types. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

We take a functional genomics approach to congenital heart disease mechanism. We used DamID to establish a robust set of target genes for NKX2-5 wild type and disease associated NKX2-5 mutations to model loss-of-function in gene regulatory networks. NKX2-5 mutants, including those with a crippled homeodomain, bound hundreds of targets including NKX2-5 wild type targets and a unique set of "off-targets", and retained partial functionality. NKXΔHD, which lacks the homeodomain completely, could heterodimerize with NKX2-5 wild type and its cofactors, including E26 transformationspecific (ETS) family members, through a tyrosine-rich homophilic interaction domain (YRD). Off-targets of NKX2-5 mutants, but not those of an NKX2-5 YRD mutant, showed overrepresentation of ETS binding sites and were occupied by ETS proteins, as determined by DamID. Analysis of kernel transcription factor and ETS targets show that ETS proteins are highly embedded within the cardiac gene regulatory network. Our study reveals binding and activities of NKX2-5 mutations on WT target and off-targets, guided by interactions with their normal cardiac and general cofactors, and suggest a novel type of gainof- function in congenital heart disease.
