Translating text into motion : performance analysis for singers and directors

The study proposes a method of interpretation, which gives the contemporary singer-actor and director a method of performance analysis considering both the visual and the auditory aspects of vocal performance. The analysis begins with an analysis of the structure, which maps out the key ideas and translates them into main states of mind. The text analysis is followed by an analysis of the musical treatment of the text, also scanning for extra dramatic meaning inherent in vocal line and musical accompaniment. The so isolated dramatic ideas in text and musical structure and content are finally discussed in terms of their physical aspects, using the system of gesture as practiced by actors and singers before, during and beyond the Baroque period. The method is exemplified by the obbligato recitative "In quali eccessi" from Donna Elvira’s scene in the second act of the opera "Don Giovanni" by L. Da Ponte and W. A. Mozart. The musical example includes gestural notation and a table gestural notation symbols.

Baltic winter (amped folk instruments-ethereal and haunting with female vocals)

Baltic Winter - a Slavic mermaid rests upon a rock on the edge of the Baltic Sea. It is night time during the depths of winter. She risks not being able to return to the sea as it could freeze in the time that she drapes the snow crested pine trees with her ethereal calls. Her voice travels through the Medieval forest in search of her nymph . . . will he hear her? Or will her calls only serve to sing her loneliness?

OK . . . now for the technical . . . I wrote this with a documentary in mind. I have used a sampled Finnish/Estonian Kantele, a touch of an acoustic guitar, female vocals, percussion, and a couple of synths.

Villages that never were : the museum village as a heritage genre

Villages of relocated buildings now constitute a phenomenon of the world's repertoire of heritage. They go by a multitude of names depending on particular inflection: open air museum, folk museum, living history museum, heritage village, museum village and so forth. 1 This paper reviews the context of the form of the genre's manifestation in Australia, where it is often known as the `pioneer village'. They are the fruit of a populist vision of national history which celebrates white rural settlement as its central theme. In practice, the villages manifest a deep commitment to collecting and saving old buildings as the meaningful construction of a favourite historical identity. But the generation that established Australia's villages has been overtaken. Today, the intersection of museum villages with the managerialist pressures of local economy enhancement and modern professional standards of heritage management challenge most villages' survival.

Sveta Bogorodica (The Church of the Holy Mother), Zavoj, Macedonia : writing about an insignificant vernacular building

Sveta Bogorodica (Church of the Holy Mother), Zavoj, is a small church built in 1934 in a village in the Republic of Macedonia. It presented a quintessential architectural division between a richly ornamented interior and a pure white formal exterior. The paper will examine the question of tradition in relation to architecture. What of the formal Byzantine architectural tradition is inherited in this folk vernacular church building? Secondly, tradition as an inherited liturgical ritual and ceremony. How are these two forms of tradition autonomous or intertwined, and how the question about transcendence in architecture pursued in the 2005 paper on Hagia Sofia might be understood within the parameters offered by this church building, will be explored in the paper .

A qualitative examination of the experience of 'depression' in hospitalized medically ill patients

Background: Research into depression in the medically ill has progressed without sufficient attention being given to the validity, in this group, of the taxonomic categories. We aimed to describe, using qualitative interviews, the experience of 'being depressed', separating experiences that are unique to depression from experiences that are common to being ill and in hospital.
Method: Forty-nine patients hospitalized for medical illness underwent a 30-min interview in which they were asked to 'Describe how you have been unwell and, in particular, how that has made you feel.' From the transcripts, a 'folk' taxonomy was constructed using a phenomenological framework involving four steps: frame elicitation to identify the important themes, componential analysis to systematically cluster the attributes into domains, a comparison of the experiences of patients screening depressed and  not-depressed, and a theoretical analysis comparing the resulting taxonomy with currently used theoretical constructs.
Results: Experiences common to all patients were being in hospital, being ill or in pain, adjusting to not being able to do things, and having time to think. In addition, all participants described being depressed, down or sad. Patients who were identified by screening as being depressed described unique experiences of depression, which included 'having to think about things' (a forceful intrusive thinking), 'not being able to sleep', 'having to rely on others', 'being a burden' to others (with associated shame and guilt), feelings of 'not getting better' and 'feeling like giving up'. Theoretical analysis suggested that this experience of depression fitted well with the concept of demoralization described by Jerome Frank.
Conclusions: Demoralization, which involves feelings of being unable to cope, helplessness, hopelessness and diminished personal esteem, characterizes much of the depression seen in hospitalized medically ill patients

This chapter was originally prefaced with an audio-visual presentation showing key scenes from Martin Scorsese’s film, The Last Temptation of Christ, cut to the folk hymn, ‘Go Tell Everyone’, which is reproduced below. The video segued into a short duologue, which dramatised the ambiguity inherent in God’s call. The presentation concluded with the same hymn accompanied by images of the poor, the marginalised and the powerful.

Living with cancer : an ethnographic study of Thai cancer patients

This thesis is an ethnographic investigation aimed at describing the lived experiences of Thai cancer patients residing in Cancer Hostel, a shelter provided for the needy whilst undergoing radiation treatment at Siam Hospital. All names, including the hospital, the shelter, and all respondents have been altered to preserve anonymity. The practice of withholding the true diagnosis from Thai patients meant that very little was known about their own feelings on cancer and its treatment. That, coupled with entrenched medical practice beliefs, presented an unusual challenge, for which an ethnographic research method was advocated as being most appropriate in helping toward a better understanding of the problem and resolving the existing dilemma. To understand the real experiences of Thai cancer patients, it was extremely important that the researcher get as near as possible to becoming one of them. Therefore, by physically 'being with’, establishing rapport, and gaining patients trust, the researcher was assured of acceptance as an insider, and was thus allowed to share the experiences of their life encounters. Research findings graphically illustrated the flaws in the practice of protecting patients from their diagnosis, who almost universally, wanted to know more about their diagnosis in order to seek help from the medical care system. Towards this, patients created meaning by linking folk beliefs, culturally inherited knowledge and a common sense, albeit naive approach in trying to make sense of their illness and treatment. Although patients saw cancer illness and its treatment, especially radiotherapy, as life threatening, it was the fear of radiation treatment, not cancer illness which turned patients away from medical treatment. As well, uncertainty, fear and frustration through the lack of information and involvement in their treatment saw patients employ strategies of both reciprocal and fatalistic acceptance; stoic resistance; and thinking positively in their efforts at coping with those life threatening situations.

Author's intent and translation : some Runyankore culture-bound expressions

This thesis explores the movement of the author's intent in the process of translating expressions (originally oral) deemed to be culture-reflecting. The author's intent can be freed from the bondage thrust upon a text through particularities of culture, linguistics and genre in the process of translation. These elements constitute the toolkit used by the author to deliver his/her intent. A translation owes it's existance to the original text with it's intent and this element should be preserved through the translator's assumption of authorial powers.
