Objective
Various TEL-JAK2 fusions have been identified in patients with lymphoblastic and myeloid leukemias that result in constitutive activation of the JAK2 kinase domain. Such fusions can mediate factor-independent growth of hematopoietic cell lines and induction of malignancy in mouse models.
Materials and methods
To assess whether zebrafish could be utilized as a suitable model for the study of myeloid oncogenesis, we generated a zebrafish tel-jak2a fusion oncoprotein based on that seen in a case of chronic myeloid leukemia. This was transiently expressed in zebrafish embryos under the control of the spi1 promoter, which is strongly active in myeloid precursors.
Results
Visual, histological, and molecular analysis revealed disruption of normal embryonic hematopoiesis, including perturbation of the myeloid and erythroid lineages.
Conclusion
These results indicate that the zebrafish tel-jak2a oncoprotein is functional, and suggest that this organism will be useful for the experimental study of myeloid malignancy.

This paper outlines an exploratory research project that draws on survey data from both primary and secondary school music teachers in Victoria. The research stems from a study that I undertook in 2002-2003 with final year Deakin University undergraduate students. That project investigated the potential of African music to enhance the generic musical experiences, learning, motivation, interest, confidence and competence of non-specialist primary teacher education students. The research project being reported in this paper is an extension of the previous study to focus on practising music teachers at both primary and secondary school levels. The research addresses the significance and contribution of African music and culture as a cross-cultural experience for music teachers, their students and the wider community. It further considers my role as an African music practitioner in terms of transformation and acculturation. This paper outlines the progress of, and provides preliminary data about, the emergence of an innovative area of teaching and learning based on African music in Victorian schools. It also explores the notion of why cross-cultural and multi-cultural engagement matters in the contemporary context of educational change.

Both copper transporting ATPases, ATP7A and ATP7B, are expressed in mammary epithelial cells but their role in copper delivery to milk has not been clarified. We investigated the role of ATP7A in delivery of copper to milk using transgenic mice that over-express human ATP7A. In mammary gland of transgenic mice, human ATP7A protein was 10- to 20-fold higher than in control mice, and was localized to the basolateral membrane of mammary epithelial cells in lactating mice. The copper concentration in the mammary gland of transgenic dams and stomach contents of transgenic pups was significantly reduced compared to non-transgenic mice. The mRNA levels of endogenous Atp7a, Atp7b, and Ctr1 copper transporters in the mammary gland were not altered by the expression of the ATP7A transgene, and the protein levels of Atp7b and ceruloplasmin were similar in transgenic and non-transgenic mice. These data suggest that ATP7A plays a role in removing excess copper from the mammary epithelial cells rather than supplying copper to milk.

Negativity bias has been well studied by psychologists but limited research has been conducted on it in a marketing context. Given previous research, this exploratory study aims to examine whether there are any negativity bias effects in brand beliefs and whether there is any influence on stated brand switching propensity amongst current users of a brand. The results suggest that there is a negativity bias evident in brand image data.

Deficits in auditory sensory memory at the electrophysiological level as indexed by mismatch negativity and those in auditory verbal memory at the neuropsychological level have been independently demonstrated in previous studies of schizophrenia. We predicted a specific association between these indices in schizophrenia. Mismatch negativities elicited by change in tone duration and phoneme duration were recorded in 23 schizophrenia patients, who were also evaluated for auditory verbal memory and executive function. Lower amplitude of mismatch negativity under the phoneme-duration condition was significantly associated with worse verbal memory. Phoneme-duration mismatch negativity was not correlated with executive function, nor was tone-duration mismatch negativity correlated with verbal memory. These results suggest that electrophysiological auditory sensory memory dysfunction underlies the basis for neuropsychological auditory verbal memory deficits in schizophrenia.

Australia comprises many cultures, ethnicities, and languages. Belonging to community music groups by older people can enhance quality of life, offer a sense fulfilment, and provide a space through which cultural and linguistic identity may be shared and celebrated. This qualitative case study explores engagement by older members of La Voce Della Luna, an Italian women’s community choir based in Melbourne, Victoria. Older Australians, particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds frequently rely on voluntary community arts organisations to enhance quality of life. Singing together can provide ways for individuals and communities to express themselves, build community identity, improve quality of life, and celebrate cultural heritage. The members of the choir know that under their inspiring conductor they would learn new songs, new languages and new ways of performing. Their music director saw that the women’s singing together opened new horizons of social engagement and new ideas such as social justice and women’s rights.
This case is from the larger ongoing joint research project (2008 ongoing), Well-being and ageing: community, diversity and the arts in Victoria. Data were gathered from documentary sources and by individual and focus group semi-structured interviews (2013) and were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Significant themes emerged: social connection and combatting isolation, the maintenance and transmission of cultural heritage, and opening horizons about music making and social justice. This paper demonstrates that active music making makes it possible for older women to learn new skills, new ideas, and create for themselves a resilient community.
