Steric control over molecular structure and supramolecular association exerted by tin- and ligand-bound groups in diorganotin carboxylates

Structural data (X-ray and solution and solid-state ^₁₁₉Sn NMR) show that skew-trapezoidal-bipyramidal diorganotin compounds of 2-quinaldate are invariably monomeric, owing to the steric bulk of the carboxylate ligand. In contrast, most of the analogous compounds of 2-picolinate (2-pic) can increase their coordination number by polymerization or the incorporation of solvent in their coordination sphere in the solid state. The exceptional compound is tBu₂Sn(2-pic)₂ (3), for which no increase in coordination number is apparent, a result that is correlated with the bulky tert-butyl groups. Thus, judicious choice of tin or ligand substituents can be exploited to dictate coordination number and/or the degree of supramolecular aggregation in the investigated systems.

Scheduling of a parallel computation-bound application and sequential applications executing concurrently on a cluster - a case study

Studies have shown that most of the computers in a non-dedicated cluster are often idle or lightly loaded. The underutilized computers in a non-dedicated cluster can be employed to execute parallel applications. The aim of this study is to learn how concurrent execution of a computation-bound and sequential applications influence their execution performance and cluster utilization. The result of the study has demonstrated that a computation-bound parallel application benefits from load balancing, and at the same time sequential applications suffer only an insignificant slowdown of execution. Overall, the utilization of a non-dedicated cluster is improved.

Determination of lower-bound ductility for AZ31 magnesium alloy by use of the bulge specimens

Despite the high demand for industrial applications of magnesium, the forming technology for wrought magnesium alloys is not fully developed due to the limited ductility and high sensitivity to the processing parameters. The processing window for magnesium alloys could be significantly widened if the lower-bound ductility (LBD) for a range of stresses, temperature, and strain rates was known. LBD is the critical strain at the moment of fracture as a function of stress state and temperature. Measurements of LBD are normally performed by testing in a hyperbaric chamber, which is highly specialized, complex, and rare equipment. In this paper an alternative approach to determine LBD is demonstrated using wrought magnesium alloy AZ31 as an example. A series of compression tests of bulge specimens combined with finite element simulation of the tests were performed. The LBD diagram was then deduced by backward calculation.

A lower bound on effective performance testing for digital forensic tools

The increasing complexity and number of digital forensic tasks required in criminal investigations demand the development of an effective and efficient testing methodology, enabling tools of similar functionalities to be compared based on their performance. Assuming that the tool tester is familiar with the underlying testing platform and has the ability to use the tools correctly, we provide a numerical solution for the lower bound on the number of testing cases needed to determine comparative capabilities of any set of digital forensic tools. We also present a case study on the performance testing of password cracking tools, which allows us to confirm that the lower bound on the number of testing runs needed is closely related to the row size of certain orthogonal arrays. We show how to reduce the number of test runs by using knowledge of the underlying system

Src homology 3-domain growth factor receptor-bound 2-like (endophilin) interacting protein 1, a novel neuronal protein that regulates energy balance

To identify genes involved in the central regulation of energy balance, we compared hypothalamic mRNA from lean and obese Psammomys obesus, a polygenic model of obesity, using differential display PCR. One mRNA transcript was observed to be elevated in obese, and obese diabetic, P. obesus compared with lean animals and was subsequently found to be increased 4-fold in the hypothalamus of lethal yellow agouti (Ay/a) mice, a murine model of obesity and diabetes. Intracerebroventricular infusion of antisense oligonucleotide targeted to this transcript selectively suppressed its hypothalamic mRNA levels and resulted in loss of body weight in both P. obesus and Sprague Dawley rats. Reductions in body weight were mediated by profoundly reduced food intake without a concomitant reduction in metabolic rate. Yeast two-hybrid screening, and confirmation in mammalian cells by bioluminescence resonance energy transfer analysis, demonstrated that the protein it encodes interacts with endophilins, mediators of synaptic vesicle recycling and receptor endocytosis in the brain. We therefore named this transcript Src homology 3-domain growth factor receptor-bound 2-like (endophilin) interacting protein 1 (SGIP1). SGIP1 encodes a large proline-rich protein that is expressed predominantly in the brain and is highly conserved between species. Together these data suggest that SGIP1 is an important and novel member of the group of neuronal molecules required for the regulation of energy homeostasis.

Earth bound: the rise and fall of a ground-breaking venture

Earth Sanctuaries Ltd (ESL) intends to offer its entire asset base for sale. ESL's primary objective is to conserve Australia's biodiversity, by breeding and preserving fauna profitably by running sanctuaries, environmental consultancies and related tourist facilities. This "ailing company" is also undergoing a management restructuring and attempting cost reduction. ESL was was one of the first firms to adopt AASB 1037. The implications for the accounting profession are discussed.

Honour bound in Australia : from defensive nationalism to critical nationalism

The imprisonment and trial of Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks catalysed widespread public debate in Australia over issues of nationalism and citizenship. This article discusses the competing forms of nationalism that underpinned this debate, especially critical nationalism, which evidences both a critique of and caring for the nation. Following Ghassan Hage's notion of the dichotomy between national caring and worrying, the article looks at a theatre production based on the David Hicks story to illustrate the role the arts play in challenging and redefining our attachment to the nation.

Author's intent and translation : some Runyankore culture-bound expressions

This thesis explores the movement of the author's intent in the process of translating expressions (originally oral) deemed to be culture-reflecting. The author's intent can be freed from the bondage thrust upon a text through particularities of culture, linguistics and genre in the process of translation. These elements constitute the toolkit used by the author to deliver his/her intent. A translation owes it's existance to the original text with it's intent and this element should be preserved through the translator's assumption of authorial powers.
