In this study, we proposed an adaptive fuzzy multi-surface sliding control (AFMSSC) for trajectory tracking of 6 degrees of freedom inertia coupled aerial vehicles with multiple inputs and multiple outputs (MIMO). It is shown that an adaptive fuzzy logic-based function approximator can be used to estimate the system uncertainties and an iterative multi-surface sliding control design can be carried out to control flight. Using AFMSSC on MIMO autonomous flight systems creates confluent control that can account for both matched and mismatched uncertainties, system disturbances and excitation in internal dynamics. It is proved that the AFMSSC system guarantees asymptotic output tracking and ultimate uniform boundedness of the tracking error. Simulation results are presented to validate the analysis.

In this study, we have electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) nanofibres and PVA composite nanofibres containing multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) (4.5 wt%), and examined the effect of the carbon nanotubes and the PVA morphology change induced by post-spinning treatments on the tensile properties, surface hydrophilicity and thermal stability of the nanofibres. Through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) characterizations, we have observed that the presence of the carbon nanotubes nucleated crystallization of PVA in the MWNTs/PVA composite nanofibres, and hence considerably improved the fibre tensile strength. Also, the presence of carbon nanotubes in PVA reduced the fibre diameter and the surface hydrophilicity of the nanofibre mat. The MWNTs/PVA composite nanofibres and the neat PVA nanofibres responded differently to post-spinning treatments, such as soaking in methanol and crosslinking with glutaric dialdehyde, with the purpose of increasing PVA crystallinity and establishing a crosslinked PVA network, respectively. The presence of carbon nanotubes reduced the PVA crystallization rate during the methanol treatment, but prevented the decrease of crystallinity induced by the crosslinking reaction. In comparison with the crosslinking reaction, the methanol treatment resulted in better improvement in the fibre tensile strength and less reduction in the tensile strain. In addition, the presence of carbon nanotubes reduced the onset decomposition temperature of the composite nanofibres, but stabilized the thermal degradation for the post-spinning treated nanofibres. The MWNTs/PVA composite nanofibres treated by both methanol and crosslinking reaction gave the largest improvement in the fibre tensile strength, water contact angle and thermal stability.

Introduction: Neck injuries are common in high performance combat pilots and have been attributed to high gravitational forces and the non-neutral head postures adopted during aerial combat maneuvers. There is still little known about the pathomechanics of these injuries.

Methods: Six Royal Australian Air Force Hawk pilots flew a sortie that included combinations of three +Gz levels (1, 3, and 5) and four head postures (Neutral, Turn, Extension, and Check-6). Surface electromyography from neck and shoulder muscles was recorded in flight. Three-dimensional measures of head postures adopted in flight were estimated postflight with respect to end-range of the cervical spine using an electromagnetic tracking device.

Results: Mean muscle activation increased significantly with both increasing +Gz and non-neutral head postures. Check-6 at +5 Gz (mean activation of all muscles = 51% MVIC) elicited significantly greater muscle activation in most muscles when compared with Neutral, Extension, and Turn head postures. High levels of muscle co-contraction were evident in high acceleration and non-neutral head postures. Head kinematics showed Check-6 was closest to end-range in any movement plane (86% ROM in rotation) and produced the greatest magnitude of rotation in other planes. Turn and Extension showed a large magnitude of rotation with reference to end-range in the primary plane of motion but displayed smaller rotations in other planes.

Discussion: High levels of neck muscle activation and co-contraction due to high +Gz and head postures close to end range were evident in this study, suggesting the major influence of these factors on the pathomechanics of neck injuries in high performance combat pilots.
A challenge in designing a RF MEMS switch is the determination of its parameters to satisfy the application requirements. Often this is done through a set of comprehensive time consuming simulations. This paper employs neural networks and develops a supervised learner that is capable of determining S11 parameter for a RF MEMS shunt switch. The inputs are the length its L and the height of its gap. The outputs are S11s for eight different frequency points from 0 to V band. The developed learner helps prevent repetitive simulations when designing the specified switch. Simulation results are presented.
Understanding, and improving, the behavior of thin surface films under exposure to externally applied forces is important for applications such as mimicking biological membranes, water evaporation mitigation, and recovery of oil spills. This paper demonstrates that the incorporation of a water-soluble polymer into the surface film composition, i.e., formation of a three-duolayer system, shows improved performance under an applied dynamic stress, with an evaporation saving of 84% observed after 16 h, compared to 74% for the insoluble three-monolayer alone. Canal viscometry and spreading rate experiments, performed using the same conditions, demonstrated an increased surface viscosity and faster spreading rate for the three-duolayer system, likely contributing to the observed improvement in dynamic performance. Brewster angle microscopy and dye-tagged polymers were used to visualize the system and demonstrated that the duolayer and monolayer system both form a homogeneous film of uniform, single-molecule thickness, with the excess material compacting into small floating reservoirs on the surface. It was also observed that both components have to be applied to the water surface together in order to achieve improved performance under dynamic conditions. These findings have important implications for the use of surface films in various applications where resistance to external disturbance is required.

Friction plays an important role in sheet metal forming (SMF) and the roughness of the surface of the sheet is a major factor that influences friction. In finite element method (FEM) models of metal forming, the roughness has usually been assumed to be constant; even though it is commonly observed that sheet drawn under tension over a tool radius results in the surface becoming shiny, indicating a major change in surface morphology. An elastic–plastic FEM model for micro-contact between a flat surface and a single roughness peak has been developed. The model was used to investigate the effect of the membrane stress in the sheet on the deformation of an artificial roughness peak. From the simulation results, the change in asperity, or deformation of the local peak, for a given nominal tool contact stress is significantly influenced by the local substrate stress. The height of the asperity decreases with increasing substrate stress and the local pressure is much higher than the nominal pressure. In addition, the local contact stress decreases with an increase in the substrate stress levels.
This paper is concerned with the problem of automatic inspection of metallic surface using machine vision. An experimental system has been developed to take images of external metallic surfaces and an intelligent approach based on morphology and genetic algorithms is proposed to detect structural defects on bumpy metallic surfaces. The approach employs genetic algorithms to automatically learn morphology processing parameters such as structuring elements and defect segmentation threshold. This paper describes the detailed procedures which include encoding scheme, genetic operation and evaluation function.

The proposed method has been implemented and tested on a number of metallic surfaces. The results suggest that the method can provide an accurate identification to the defects and can be developed into a viable commercial visual inspection system.

Water repellent soils are difficult to irrigate and susceptible to preferential flow, which enhances the potential for accelerated leaching to groundwater of hazardous substances. Over 5 Mha of Australian soil is water repellent, while treated municipal sewage is increasingly used for irrigation. Only if a critical water content is exceeded will repellent soils become wettable. To avoid excessive loss of water from the root zone via preferential flow paths, irrigation schemes should therefore aim to keep the soil wet enough to maintain soil wettability. Our objective was to monitor the near-surface water content and water repellency in a blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) plantation irrigated with treated sewage. The plantation's sandy soil surface was strongly water repellent when dry. For 4 months, three rows of 15 blue gum trees each received no irrigation, three other rows received 50% of the estimated potential water use minus rainfall, and three more rows received 100%. During this period, 162 soil samples were obtained in three sampling rounds, and their water content (% dry mass) and degree of water repellency determined. Both high and low irrigation effectively wetted up the soil and eliminated water repellency after 2 (high) or 4 (low) months. A single-peaked distribution of water contents was observed in the soil samples, but the water repellency distribution was dichotomous, with 44% extremely water-repellent and 36% wettable. This is consistent with a threshold water content at which a soil sample changes from water repellent to wettable, with spatial variability of this threshold creating a much wider transition zone at the field scale. We characterized this transition zone by expressing the fraction of wettable samples as a function of water content, and demonstrated a way to estimate from this the wettable portion of a field from a number of water content measurements. To keep the plantation soil wettable, the water content must be maintained at a level at which a significant downward flux is likely, with the associated enhanced leaching. At water contents with negligible downward flux, the field is water repellent, and leaching through preferential flow paths is likely. Careful management is needed to resolve these conflicting requirements.
The reductive voltammetry of the photovoltaic sensitizer [(H2-dcbpy)2Ru(NCS)2] (H2-dcbpy=2,2′-bipyridine-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid) and [(H3-tctpy)Ru(NCS)3]− (H3-tctpy=2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine-4,4′,4″-tricarboxylic acid) has been investigated in acetone. Significant surface interactions at both platinum and glassy carbon electrodes occur at 0.6 V prior to the reversible potential expected for ligand-based reduction process of the fully protonated acids. The origin of the surface interactions are attributed to the acid–base behaviour of the compounds, combined with overall deprotonation and reduction to hydrogen, since repetitive cycling of the potential reveals well-defined reversible reduction processes in the negative potential range, resulting from formation of doubly deprotonated [(H-dcbpy−)2Ru(NCS)2]2− and singly deprotonated [(H2-tctpy−)Ru(NCS)3]2−, respectively. The extent of the surface interactions has been estimated by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and chronocoulometric measurements. Under certain conditions, a thick conducting polymer consisting of several hundred monolayers is formed.
Plant-based management systems implementing deep-rooted, perennial vegetation have been identified as important in mitigating the spread of secondary dryland salinity due to its capacity to influence water table depth. The Glenelg Hopkins catchment is a highly modified watershed in the southwest region of Victoria, where dryland salinity management has been identified as a priority. Empirical relationships between the proportion of native vegetation and in-stream salinity were examined in the Glenelg Hopkins catchment using a linear regression approach. Whilst investigations of these relationships are not unique, this is the first comprehensive attempt to establish a link between land use and in-stream salinity in the study area. The results indicate that higher percentage land cover with native vegetation was negatively correlated with elevated in-stream salinity. This inverse correlation was consistent across the 3 years examined (1980, 1995, and 2002). Recognising the potential for erroneously inferring causal relationships, the methodology outlined here was both a time and cost-effective tool to inform management strategies at a regional scale, particularly in areas where processes may be operating at scales not easily addressed with on-site studies.
Current orthopaedic biomaterials research mainly focuses on designing implants that could induce controlled, guided and rapid healing. In the present study, the surface morphologies of titanium (Ti) and niobium (Nb) metals were tailored to form nanoporous, nanoplate and nanofibre-like structures through adjustment of the temperature in the alkali-heat treatment. The in vitro bioactivity of these structures was then evaluated by soaking the treated samples in simulated body fluid (SBF). It was found that the morphology of the modified surface significantly influenced the apatite-inducing ability. The Ti surface with a nanofibre-like structure showed better apatite-inducing ability than the nanoporous or nanoplate surface structures. A thick dense apatite layer formed on the Ti surface with nanofibre-like structure after 1 week of soaking in SBF. It is expected that the nanofibre-like surface could achieve good apatite formation in vivo and subsequently enhance osteoblast cell adhesion and bone formation.
A porous Ti–18 at.%Nb–4 at.%Sn (hereafter, Ti–18Nb–4Sn) alloy was prepared by powder metallurgy. The porous structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the phase constituents were analysed by X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties of the porous alloy were investigated using a compressive test. To enhance the bioactivity of the alloy surface, alkali-heat treatment was used to modify the surface. The bioactivity of the pre-treated alloy sample was investigated using a biomimetic process by soaking the sample into simulated body fluid (SBF). Results indicate that the elastic modulus and plateau stress of the porous Ti–18Nb–4Sn alloy decrease with decreasing relative density. The mechanical properties of the porous alloy can be tailored to match those of human bone. After soaking in SBF for 7 days, a hydroxyapatite layer formed on the surface of the pre-treated porous Ti–18Nb–4Sn alloy. The pre-treated porous Ti–18Nb–4Sn alloy therefore has the potential to be a bioactive implant material.
Merozoite surface protein 8 (MSP8) has shown promise as a vaccine candidate in the Plasmodium yoelii rodent malaria model and has a proposed role in merozoite invasion of erythrocytes. However, the temporal expression and localisation of MSP8 are unusual for a merozoite antigen. Moreover, in Plasmodium falciparum the MSP8 gene could be disrupted with no apparent effect on in vitro growth. To address the in vivo function of full-length MSP8, we truncated MSP8 in the rodent parasite Plasmodium berghei. PbΔMSP8 disruptant parasites displayed a normal blood-stage growth rate but no increase in reticulocyte preference, a phenomenon observed in P. yoelii MSP8 vaccinated mice. Expression levels of erythrocyte surface antigens were similar in P. berghei wild-type and PbΔMSP8-infected erythrocytes, suggesting that a parasitophorous vacuole function for MSP8 does not involve global trafficking of such antigens. These data demonstrate that a full-length membrane-associated form of PbMSP8 is not essential for blood-stage growth.
