High Mn steels demonstrate an exceptional combination of high strength and ductility due to their high work hardening rate during deformation. The microstructure evolution and work hardening behavior of Fe18Mn0.6C1.5Al TWIP steel in uni-axial tension were examined. The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of all the relevant deformation mechanism : slip, twinning and dynamic strain aging. Constitutive modeling was carried out based on the Kubin-Estrin model, in which the densities of mobile and forest dislocations are coupled in order to account for the continuous immobilization of mobile dislocations during straining. These coupled dislocation densities were also used for simulating the contribution of dynamic strain aging on the flow stress. The model was modified to include the effect of twinning.

The Australian government has set ambitious targets for increased higher-education participation of people from low socioeconomic backgrounds. There is, thus, a pressing need to explore how best to empower these students with what they require to progress and succeed at university. The paper draws on a literature review and qualitative data from a national study in which 89 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and 26 staff were interviewed. The paper argues that demystifying academic culture and discourses for these students is a key step institutions and staff can take in assisting students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to progress and succeed at university. A recurring theme to emerge from both the literature and interviews with students and staff was that teaching the discourse empowers and enables students to learn, has a positive impact on their sense of belonging and ultimately helps them succeed in higher education.

The reduction of the cost of infrared (IR) cameras in recent years has made IR imaging a highly viable modality for face recognition in practice. A particularly attractive advantage of IR-based over conventional, visible spectrumbased face recognition stems from its invariance to visible illumination. In this paper we argue that the main limitation of previous work on face recognition using IR lies in its ad hoc approach to treating different nuisance factors which affect appearance, prohibiting a unified approach that is capable of handling concurrent changes in multiple (or indeed all) major extrinsic sources of variability, which is needed in practice. We describe the first approach that attempts to achieve this – the framework we propose achieves outstanding recognition performance in the presence of variable (i) pose, (ii) facial expression, (iii) physiological state, (iv) partial occlusion due to eye-wear, and (v) quasi-occlusion due to facial hair growth.

Ten resistance trained (RT) and 6 non-resistance trained (NRT) subjects were used to determine differences in quadriceps activation between isometric single and double knee extensions and squat contractions. Greater inactivation, as measured by the interpolated twitch technique, was recorded with single (RT: 16.5%, NRT: 17.6%) than double leg extensions (RT: 8.4%, NRT: 13.4%) or squats (RT: 4.03%, NRT: 1.7%). There was no significant difference between the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force of the dominant leg during single and double leg extensions. However, in NRT subjects, the contralateral or non-dominant leg during double leg extensions exhibited significantly less force than the dominant leg (715.9 vs 566.9 N). This deficit may be due to a lesser reliance on the non-dominant limb. The contractions of multiple lower body muscle groups enhanced the activation of the dominant quadriceps. Greater levels of activation may be necessary to cope with the stabilization necessary for bilateral and multi-articular contractions.

This book is dedicated to women who shop. All retailers and the many industries associated with retail will gain useful knowledge from this book. It will also provide enlightenment for women themselves and their partners who are fascinated by the compulsion to shop. Minahan at Deakin Uni, Vic and Beverland at Uni of Melbourne, Vic.
