The microstructural evolution during compression (at 350°C and a strain rate of 0.01s-1) was examined for magnesium alloy AZ31 received in the "as-cast" condition. It was revealed that at low strains, many twins are produced and dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains form as a necklace along pre-existing grain boundaries. At higher strains, DRX stagnates, most likely due to the accommodation of deformation in the DRX fraction of the material. It was also observed that twin boundaries act as sites for the nucleation of DRX grains. The analysis was repeated for samples pre-compressed to a strain of 0.15 at room temperature prior to the hot deformation step. The idea of these additional tests was to increase the degree of twinning and therefore the density of sites for the nucleation of DRX. It was found that statically recrystallized (SRX) grains developed at the twins during heating to the test temperature. When these samples were deformed, the peak flow stress was reduced by approximately 20% and the development of DRX was enhanced. This can be attributed to the accelerated nucleation of DRX in the refined SRX structure.

A small number of crystal plasticity simulations and tensile tests are carried out with the aim of demonstrating that control of twinning can improve the uniform elongation of magnesium based alloys, It is suggested that this can be accomplished through texture manipulation because texture influences both the fraction of grains that undergo twinning and the strain required for the twinning reaction to go to completion.

The progress of “c-axis tension” twinning in magnesium is represented in an analytical framework and this is used as a basis for predicting the flow stress. The difference in the stress–strain curves between tension and compression can thus be modelled with a change to a parameter that reflects the fraction of grains that undergo twinning.

Magnesium alloys are attractive for automotive and aerospace industries, due to their low density. One problem with these alloys is their limited formability at room temperature. Twinning plays a dominant role in deformation behaviour and it can be expected that an increased understanding of twinning will help improve formability. In the present work, the behaviour of different twinning systems in as-cast Mg-3AI-IZn is investigated using in-situ tensile tests in a scanning electron microscope. Electron backscatter diffraction and back scatter electron imaging were carried out during the tests. The results show both "tension" and "compression" twinning are active at room temperature and that twinning and untwinning occur both during loading and unloading.

Magnesium and its alloys do not in general undergo the same extended range of plasticity as their competitor structural metals. The present work presents part II of a study that examines some of the roles deformation twinning might play in the phenomenon. A series of tensile and compression tests results are reported for common wrought alloys: AZ31, ZK60 and ZM20. These data are combined with EBSD analysis and simple flow stress models to argue the following: (i) that “contraction” double twinning (which enables contraction along the c axis) can decrease the uniform elongation, and (ii) that compression double twinning can also account for shear failure at low strains. The last of these is described as a combined consequence of strain softening of the continuum and the local generation of twin sized voids.

The present work is part I of a study that examines some of the roles deformation twinning might play in the phenomenon. A series of tensile test results are reported for the common wrought alloy AZ31. These data are employed in conjunction with a simple constitutive model to argue that View the MathML source twinning (which gives extension along the c-axis) can increase the uniform elongation in tensile tests. This effect appears to be similar to that seen in Ti, Zr and Cu–Si and in the so called TWIP phenomenon in steel.

The present work combines electron backscattering diffraction and Schmid analysis to investigate secondary twinning in the magnesium alloy Mg–3Al–1Zn. Inspection of the misorientations between the parent and {1011} - {1012} doubly twinned volumes reveals that there are four possible variants. One of these variants (the one that forms a misorientation with the matrix characterized by 38°⟨1210⟩ ) is favoured much more than the others. This variant involves the activation of secondary twinning systems quite inconsistent with Schmid-type behaviour. For the secondary twin to grow significantly it must take on a shape enforced by the primary twin. This is non-optimal for strain compatibility. It is argued that the 38°⟨1210⟩ variant occurs most because it provides the closest match between the primary and secondary twinning planes, thus minimizing the compatibility strain.

In metals that yield as a consequence of mechanical twinning, the yield stress is a function of the grain size in much the same way as it is for dislocation glide. However, the sensitivity to grain size is typically greater. The intent of the present communication is to show that this can be understood, at least in part, in terms of a size effect that accompanies twinning. Some confirmatory data from a magnesium alloy are presented.

The magnesium alloy Mg–5%Y–2%Nd–2%RE–0.5Zr, known as WE54, was heat treated to produce different particle dispersions. Specimens were then compressed to a strain of 8%, and this resulted in prolific mechanical twinning.EBSD analysis revealed that {1121} twins were operative in this alloy, a twinning mode not reported before in magnesium alloys. Activation of this twinning mode is ascribed to the presence of alloying elements in solution. Removal of alloying elements from solution by precipitation treatments completely inhibited this twin mode.

The effect of grain size and deformation temperature on the behavior of wire-drawn a-Ti during compression has been examined. At strains of 0.3, the flow stress exhibited a negative Hall–Petch slope. This is proposed to result from the prevalence of twinning during the compressive deformation. Electron backscattered diffraction revealed that {1012} was the most prolific twin type across all the deformation temperatures and grain sizes examined. Of the twinning modes observed, {1122} twinning was the most sensitive to the grain size and deformation temperature. The range of morphologies exhibited by deformation twins is also described.

The effect of grain size on the mechanical properties and deformation twinning behaviour in high manganese steel was investigated. In order to generate different grain sizes, the samples were subjected to hot rolling, cold rolling and annealing. Room temperature tensile testing of the steel with different grain sizes (5-50 µm) indicated the occurrence of twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) in all the samples. Also, changes in work-hardening behaviour accompanied changes in the grain size. The results are discussed in terms of the enhanced sensitivity of twinning to the grain size.
