The ionic liquid (IL) 2-butylthiolonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, [mimSBu][NTf2], facilitates the efficient extraction of silver(i) from aqueous media via interaction with both the cation and anion components of the IL. Studies with a conventional aqueous-IL two phase system as well as microextraction of silver(i) by a thick IL film adhered to an electrode monitored in situ by cyclic voltammetry, established that [mimSBu][NTf2] can extract electroactive silver(i) ions from an aqueous solution. The pH of the aqueous phase decreases upon addition of [mimSBu]+, which is attributed to partial release of the hydrogen attached to the N(3) nitrogen atom of the imidazolium ring. The presence of silver(i) further increase the acidity of the aqueous phase as a consequence of coordination with the IL cation component. Voltammetric and 1H and 13C NMR techniques have been used to establish the nature of the silver(i) complexes extracted, and show that the form of interaction with the IL differs from that outlined previously for the extraction of copper(ii). Insights on the competition established when silver(i) is extracted in the presence of copper(ii) are provided. Finally, it is noted that metallic silver can be directly electrodeposited at the electrode surface after extraction of silver(i) into [mimSBu][NTf2] and that back extraction of silver(i) into aqueous media is achieved by addition of an acidic aqueous solution.

Three new ortho -metallated palladium complexes, [Pd(O,O’-hfacac)(κ2-2-C6F4PPh2)] (11), [Pd2(O,O’hfacac)2(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)2](12) and [Pd(O,O’-hfacac)(κC-2-C6F4PPh2)(PPh3)] (13) (hfacac = hexafluoroace-tylacetonate), have been prepared and fully characterised. The electrochemical reductions of complexes 11–13, together with those of other cyclopalladated complexes containing 2C6R4PPh2 ligands (R = H, F) were studied by cyclic, rotating disk and microelectrode voltammetry. Evidence for the one-electron reduction of [PdI(κ2-2-C6F4PPh2)(PPh2Fc)] (6) was obtained from coulometric analysis, although the product is unstable and undergoes further chemical processes. Preparative electro-reduction of [Pd2(μ-Br)2(κ2-2-C6F4PPh2)2] (7) in CH2Cl2 causes reductive cleavage of its Pd–C σ-bonds and formation of the complex [PdBr2{PPh2(2-C6F4H)}2](14); possible mechanisms are discussed.

The mean total length (LT), mass and age of ready to migrate female silver shortfin eels Anguilla australis from the Hopkins River estuary and the mouth of the Merri River in south-eastern Australia, were 83·2 ± 1·2 cm, 1051 ± 51 g, and 17·2 ± 1·79 years, respectively. The eye index (IE) of the silver shortfin eels was < 5·2 (mean 7·64 ± 0·29) and differed significantly from that of the yellow shortfin eels collected from two other sites. The IE increased with LT (mm) and was related by log IE= 2·656 log LT6·925. The per cent moisture, protein and ash content of the liver of silver shortfin eels was significantly lower than in yellow shortfin eels, but lipid content was significantly higher in the former (35·5 ± 2·0%). The mean mass μg mg lipid ‾) of saturates (230·4 ± 2·6 v. 181·7 ±2·6), monoenes (367·4 ± 6·3 v. 290·8 ± 8·9) and PUFA (177·3 ± 5·3 v. 159·7 ± 4·6) in muscle was significantly higher, and the great majority of individual fatty acids was found also in higher quantities in silver shortfin eels. In the liver, the PUFA found in the highest quantity was 22:6n-3, except in shortfin eels from Hopkins River estuary, and the amount of 18:2n-6 in the liver of silver shortfin eels was significantly higher than that in yellow shortfin eels but the reverse was true of 20:4n-6. In both muscle and liver tissues the saturate 16:0 and the monoene 18:ln-9 collectively accounted for >50% of all the fatty acids in the lipid.

Recent advances in high throughput experiments and annotations via published literature have provided a wealth of interaction maps of several biomolecular networks, including metabolic, protein-protein, and protein-DNA interaction networks. The architecture of these molecular networks reveals important principles of cellular organization and molecular functions. Analyzing such networks, i.e., discovering dense regions in the network, is an important way to identify protein complexes and functional modules. This task has been formulated as the problem of finding heavy subgraphs, the Heaviest k-Subgraph Problem (k-HSP), which itself is NPhard. However, any method based on the k-HSP requires the parameter k and an exact solution of k-HSP may still end up as a “spurious” heavy subgraph, thus reducing its practicability in analyzing large scale biological networks. We proposed a new formulation, called the rank-HSP, and two dynamical systems to approximate its results. In addition, a novel metric, called the Standard deviation and Mean Ratio (SMR), is proposed for use in “spurious” heavy subgraphs to automate the discovery by setting a fixed threshold. Empirical results on both the simulated graphs and biological networks have demonstrated the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposal.

The complexes [Hpy][Cu(H3L)(H2O)] 1 (L6 = nitrilotrimethylenetrisphosphonate) and [Cu(HL°)(py)]2·2Me2CO 2 [(L°)3 = P,P,P" -triphenylnitrilotrismethylenetrisphosphinate)] have been isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, near IR-visible spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. The structure determination has shown the complexes to be constituted by monomeric and dimeric units respectively. In the monomer the metal atom is surrounded by the phosphonate ligand and a water molecule, with a geometry between a trigonal bipyramid and a square pyramid. The two copper atoms in the dimer are held together by an arm of the tripod ligand, with a pyridine molecule as additional ligand, and display octahedral geometry. The presence of monomeric and dimeric species in aqueous solutions of 1 and 2 has been shown by ESMS studies. The formation in water solution of the dimer [{Cu(H3L)}2]2-, as a minor species, has been supported by potentiometric measurements, whereas only the monomeric anion [CuL°] has been ascertained to be present. In general the ligand H3L° forms less stable copper(II) complexes than H6L.

The interactions of the beryllium(II) ion with the cyclopentadienyltris(diethylphosphito-P)cobaltate monoanion, L-, have been investigated, in aqueous solution, by synthetic methods, potentiometry, ESMS, and 1H, 31P, and 9Be NMR spectroscopy. L- has been found able to displace either two or three water molecules in the beryllium(II) coordination sphere, to form mononuclear, dinuclear, and trinuclear derivatives, in which the metal ion is pseudotetrahedrally coordinated. The species [BeL(H2O)]+ and [Be2L2(μ-OH)]+ have been identified in solution while complexes of formula BeL2 and [Be3L4](ClO4)2 have been isolated as solid materials. The species [BeL(OPPh2)]+, closely related to [BeL(H2O)]+, has been characterized in acetone solution and isolated as tetraphenylborate salt. The structure of the unusual trimeric complex [Be3L4]2+ has been elucidated by an unprecedented 2D 9Be-31P NMR correlation spectrum showing the presence of a single central beryllium nucleus and two equivalent terminal beryllium nuclei. The three beryllium centers are held together by four cobaltate ligands, which display two different bonding modes: two ligands are terminally linked with all the three oxygen donors to one terminal beryllium, and the other two bridge two metal centers, sharing the oxygen donors between central and terminal beryllium atoms.

Nanostructured poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) interpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPECs) were prepared by casting from THF/ethanol solution. The morphological behaviour of this amphiphilic block copolymer/polyelectrolyte complexes with respect to the composition was investigated in a solvent mixture. The phase behaviour, specific interactions and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy (OM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Micelle formation occurred due to the aggregation of hydrogen bonded P2VP block and polyelectrolyte (PAA) from non-interacted PCL blocks. It was observed that the hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the micelles in solution decreased with increasing PAA content up to 40 wt%. After 50 wt% PAA content, Dh again increased. The micelle formation in PCL-b-P2VP/PAA IPECs was due to the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between PAA homopolymer units and P2VP blocks of the block copolymer. The penetration of PAA homopolymers into the shell of the PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer micelles resulted in the folding of the P2VP chains, which in turn reduced the hydrodynamic size of the micelles. After the saturation of the shell with PAA homopolymers, the size of the micelles increased due to the absorption of added PAA onto the surface of the micelles.

To assess the physico-chemical characteristics of protein-protein interactions, protein sequences and overall structural folds have been analyzed previously. To highlight this, discovery and examination of amino acid patterns at the binding sites defined by structural proximity in 3-dimensional (3D) space are essential. In this paper, we investigate the interacting preferences of 3D pattern pairs discovered separately in transient and obligate protein complexes. These 3D pattern pairs are not necessarily sequence-consecutive, but each residue in two groups of amino acids from two proteins in a complex is within certain °A threshold to most residues in the other group. We develop an algorithm called AA-pairs by which every pair of interacting proteins is represented as a bipartite graph, and it discovers all maximal quasi-bicliques from every bipartite graph to form our 3D pattern pairs. From 112 and 2533 highly conserved 3D pattern pairs discovered in the transient and obligate complexes respectively, we observe that Ala and Leu is the highest occuring amino acid in interacting 3D patterns of transient (20.91%) and obligate (33.82%) complexes respectively. From the study on the dipeptide composition on each side of interacting 3D pattern pairs, dipeptides Ala-Ala and Ala-Leu are popular in 3D patterns of both transient and obligate complexes. The interactions between amino acids with large hydrophobicity difference are present more in the transient than in the obligate complexes. On contrary, in obligate complexes, interactions between hydrophobic residues account for the top 5 most occuring amino acid pairings.

Variable-temperature four-probe conductivity measurements and Raman spectroscopy were investigated for iodine in poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and NaI3 in PPO. The Raman spectra indicate the presence of both triiodide and polyiodide species in samples of I2-doped PPO. The conductivity of these PPO/I2 samples increased with increasing I2 concentration and reached a plateau at approximately 12 vol % iodine. Raman spectra at 20 °C indicate that, at concentrations less than 23 vol % I3-, the dominant species is the triiodide. Polymer salt complexes with varying amounts of I3- appear to display a conductivity threshold near Tg, at 0.2 vol fraction of triiodide.

A new method was investigated to produce new multiscale fibrous nanocomposites comprised of titanium oxide (TiO2) nanofibers and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs). The process involved electrospinning TiO2 precursor solution containing colloidal solution of Ag NPs, and organic solvent (dimethyl-n′n-formamide) to fabricate a porous, nonwoven, free-standing nanofiber mesh. Postprocess heating of the electrospun nanofibers entailed calcination in air environment at 500°C for 3 h. Microemulsion processing was used to generate NPs of Ag in a monodispersed distribution throughout the colloidal solution. X-ray diffraction data were consistent with the anatase phase of TiO2, while transmission electron microscopy and hydrogen desorption measurements revealed a very porous microstructure. It was demonstrated that NP colloidal stability is solvent dependent. It is anticipated that incorporation of metal particles in nanofibers will lead to enhanced photocurrent generation, when used in functional devices.

Four new complexes, [PdX(κ2-2-C6R4PPh2)(PPh2Fc)] [X = Br, R = H (1), R = F (2); X = I, R = H (3), R = F (4)], containing ferrocenyldiphenylphosphine (PPh2Fc) have been prepared and fully characterised. The X-ray structures of complexes trans-1, cis-2 and cis-4, and that of a decomposition product of 4, [Pd(κ2-2-C6F4PPh2)(μ-I)(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)PdI(PPh2Fc)] (5), have been determined. These complexes show a distorted square planar geometry about the metal atom, the bite angles of the chelate ligands being about 69°, as expected. The cis/trans ratio of 1–4 in solution is strongly dependent on solvent. The new complexes and the uncoordinated PPh2Fc ligand were electrochemically characterised by cyclic and rotating disk voltammetry, UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry, and bulk electrolysis in dichloromethane and acetonitrile. In both cases, oxidation occurs at both the ferrocene and phosphine centres, but the complexes oxidise at more positive potentials than uncoordinated PPh2Fc; subsequently, the metal–phosphorus bond is cleaved, leading to free PPh2Fc+, which undergoes further chemical and electrochemical reactions.

The high sensitivity that can be attained using a bienzymatic system and mediated by the redox polymer [Os(bpy)2ClPyCH2NHpoly(allylamine)] (Os-PAA), has been verified by on-line interfacing of a rotating bioreactor and continuous-flow/stopped-flow/continuous-flow processing. When the hydrogen peroxide formed by LOx layer reaches the inner layer, the electronic flow between the immobilized peroxidase and the electrode surface produces a current, proportional to lactate concentration. The determination of lactate was possible with a limit of detection of 5 nmol l−1 in the processing of as many as 30 samples per hour. This arrangement allows working in undiluted milk samples with a good stability and reproducibility. Horseradish peroxidase [EC 1.11.1.7] and Os-PAA were covalently immobilized on the glassy carbon electrode surface (upper cell body), lactate oxidase [EC 1.1.3.x] was immobilized on a disk that can be rotated.
