Carbon black (CB) fillers were used to study the feasibility of achieving multiple percolation using an immiscible (polar) polymer blend matrix. By tailoring the morphology of the insulating dual phase matrix it has been shown that the percolation thresholdc) can be reduced over single-phase matrices. Cocontinuity in the polymer matrix is important in reducing Фc by either preferentially isolating the conducting filler at the interface of the two phases or within one particular continuous phase of the matrix thereby forming a continuous conducting network within a continuous network (multiple percolation). Actual melt processing time has been found to influence the dispersion of the fillers and hence Фc. Polarity of the matrix as well as the processing method has also been found to influence the dispersion of the filler within the host polymer.

Percolative dielectric composites of sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone) (SPAEK) and acidified graphite nanosheets (AGSs) were fabricated by a solution method. The dielectric constant of the as-prepared composite with 4.01 vol % AGSs was found to be 330 at 1000 Hz; this was a significant increase compared to that of pure SPAEK. Through the calculation, a low percolation threshold of the AGS/SPAEK composite was confirmed at 3.18 vol % (0.0318 volume fraction) AGSs; this was attributed to the large surface area and high conductivity of the AGSs. Additionally, our percolative dielectric composites also exhibited good mechanical performances and good thermostability, with a tensile strength of 71.7 MPa, a tensile modulus of 1.91 GPa, a breaking elongation of 16.4%, and a mass loss temperature at 5% of 336°C.

Electrically conductive elastic nanocomposites with well-organized graphene architectures offer significant improvement in various properties. However, achieving desirable graphene architectures in cross-linked rubber is challenging due to high viscosity and cross-linked nature of rubber matrices. Here, three dimensional (3D) interconnected graphene networks in natural rubber (NR) matrix are framed with self-assembly integrating latex compounding technology by employing electrostatic adsorption between poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) modified graphene (positively charged) and NR latex particles (negatively charged) as the driving force. The 3D graphene structure endows the resulted nanocomposites with excellent electrical conductivity of 7.31. S/m with a graphene content of 4.16. vol.%, extremely low percolation threshold of 0.21. vol.% and also analogous reinforcement in mechanical properties. The developed strategy will provide a practical approach for developing elastic nanocomposites with multi-functional properties. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Electrically conductive graphene-filled polystyrene nanocomposites with well-organized three dimensional (3D) microstructures were simply prepared by electrostatic assembly integrated latex technology. First, positively charged polystyrene was synthesized via disperse polymerization in ethanol/water medium by using a cationic co-monomer, and then directly co-assembled with graphene oxide. Eventually, a honeycomb-like graphene 3D framework was embedded in polystyrene matrix after in situ chemical reduction and hot compression molding. Due to the 3D conductive pathway derived from graphene based network evidenced by morphology studies, the fabricated nanocomposites show excellent electrical properties, i.e. extremely low percolation threshold of 0.09 vol% and high saturated conductivity of 25.2 S/m at GNs content of 1.22 vol%. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

The present paper compares improvements to the fracture energy and electrical conductivity of epoxy nanocomposites reinforced by one-dimensional carbon nanofibres (CNFs) or two-dimensional graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The focus of this investigation is on the effects of the shape, orientation and concentration (i.e. 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 wt%) of nanoscale carbon reinforcements on the property improvements. Alignment of the nano-reinforcements in the epoxy nanocomposites was achieved through the application of an alternating current (AC) electric-field before gelation and curing of the epoxy resin. Alignment of the nano-reinforcements increased the electrical conductivity and simultaneously lowered the percolation threshold necessary to form a conductive network in the nanocomposites. Nano-reinforcement alignment also increased greatly the fracture energy of the epoxy due to a higher fraction of the nano-reinforcement participating in multiple intrinsic (e.g. interfacial debonding and void growth) and extrinsic (e.g. pull-out and bridging) toughening mechanisms. A mechanistic model is presented to quantify the contributions from the different toughening mechanisms induced by CNFs and GNPs to the large improvements in fracture toughness. The model results show that one-dimensional CNFs are more effective than GNPs at increasing the intrinsic toughness of epoxy via void growth, whereas two-dimensional GNPs are more effective than CNFs at improving the extrinsic toughness via crack bridging and pull-out.

Recent advances in wearable electronics, technical textiles, and wearable strain sensing devices have resulted in extensive research on stretchable electrically conductive fibers. Addressing these areas require the development of efficient fiber processing methodologies that do not compromise the mechanical properties of the polymer (typically an elastomer) when nanomaterials are added as conductive fillers. It is highly desirable that the addition of conductive fillers provides not only electrical conductivity, but that these fillers also enhance the stiffness, strength, stretchability, and toughness of the polymer. Here, the compatibility of polyurethane (PU) and graphene oxide (GO) is utilized for the study of the properties of elastomeric conductive fibers prepared by wet-spinning. The GO-reinforced PU fibers demonstrate outstanding mechanical properties with a 200-fold and a threefold enhancement in Young's modulus and toughness, respectively. Postspinning thermal annealing of the fibers results in electrically conductive fibers with a low percolation threshold (≈0.37 wt% GO). An investigation into optimized fiber's electromechanical behavior reveals linear strain sensing abilities up to 70%. Results presented here provide practical insights on how to simultaneously maintain or improve electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical properties in conductive elastomer fibers.

Variable-temperature four-probe conductivity measurements and Raman spectroscopy were investigated for iodine in poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and NaI3 in PPO. The Raman spectra indicate the presence of both triiodide and polyiodide species in samples of I2-doped PPO. The conductivity of these PPO/I2 samples increased with increasing I2 concentration and reached a plateau at approximately 12 vol % iodine. Raman spectra at 20 °C indicate that, at concentrations less than 23 vol % I3-, the dominant species is the triiodide. Polymer salt complexes with varying amounts of I3- appear to display a conductivity threshold near Tg, at 0.2 vol fraction of triiodide.

The accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD) method assumes a linear VO<sub>2</sub>-power relationship for exercise intensities increasing from below the lactate threshold (BLT) to above the lactate threshold (ALT). Factors that were likely to effect the linearity of the VO<sub>2</sub>-power regression and the precision of the estimated total energy demand (ETED) were investigated. These included the slow component of VO<sub>2</sub> kinetics (SC), a forced resting y-intercept and exercise intensities BLT and ALT. Criteria for linearity and precision included the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) of the VO<sub>2</sub>-power relationship, the length of the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the ETED and the standard error of the predicted value (SEP), respectively. Eight trained male and one trained female triathlete completed the required cycling tests to establish the AOD when pedalling at 80 rev/min. The influence of the SC on the linear extrapolation of the ETED was reduced by measuring VO<sub>2</sub> after three min of exercise. Measuring VO<sub>2</sub> at this time provided a new linear extrapolation method consisting of ten regression points spread evenly from BLT and ALT. This method produced an ETED with increased precision compared to using regression equations developed from intensities BLT with no forced y-intercept value; (95%CI (L), 0.70±0.26 versus 1.85±1.10, P<0.01; SEP(L/Watt), 0.07±0.02 versus 0.28±0.17; P<0.01). Including a forced y-intercept value with five regression points either BLT or ALT increased the precision of estimating the total energy demand to the same level as when using 10 regression points, (5 points BLT + y-intercept versus 5 points ALT + y-intercept versus 10 points; 95%CI(l), 0.61±0.32, 0.87±0.40, 0.70±0.26; SEP(L/Watt), 0.07±0.03, 0.08±0.04, 0.07±0.02; p>0.05). Over-representation of indigenous persons in the criminal justice system has changed little since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) - claim by the Victorian Department of Justice that a key recommendation of RCIADIC had been implemented, namely that imprisonment should be a sentence of last resort for indigenous offenders - how to ensure that imprisonment is a sanction of last resort when indigenous prisoners present for sentence.

Detection thresholds and psychophysical curves were established for caffeine, quinine-HCl (QHCl), and propylthiouracil (PROP) in a sample of 33 subjects (28 female mean age 24 ± 4). The mean detection threshold (±standard error) for caffeine, QHCl, and PROP was 1.2 ± 0.12, 0.0083 ± 0.001, and 0.088 ± 0.07 mM, respectively. Pearson product–moment analysis revealed no significant correlations between detection thresholds of the compounds. Psychophysical curves were constructed for each bitter compound over 6 concentrations. There were significant correlations between incremental points of the individual psychophysical curves for QHCl and PROP. Regarding caffeine, there was a specific concentration (6 mM) below and above which the incremental steps in bitterness were correlated. Between compounds, analysis of psychophysical curves revealed no correlations with PROP, but there were significant correlations between the bitterness of caffeine and QHCl at higher concentrations on the psychophysical curve (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis of detection threshold and suprathreshold intensity within a compound revealed a significant correlation between PROP threshold and suprathreshold intensity (r = 0.46–0.4, P < 0.05), a significant negative correlation for QHCl (r = –0.33 to –0.4, P < 0.05), and no correlation for caffeine. The results suggest a complex relationship between chemical concentration, detection threshold, and suprathreshold intensity.

Preferential flow affects solute transport in natural soils, leading to high spatiotemporal variation of concentration. A multicompartment solute sampler (MCS), yielding multiple breakthrough curves at a given depth, can monitor tracer movement in a heterogeneous soil. We present a technique to estimate from MCS data whether a soil monolith is sufficiently large to capture preferential flow, which is a necessity for tracer breakthrough curves to be representative. For several soils, we estimate that an MCS should be larger than 0.1 to 0.2 m2. We also expand dilution theory to analyze the concentration variations of a tracer passing the control plane monitored by the MCS, in addition to the conventional plume spreading analysis. We characterize the set of locally observed breakthrough curves by the entropy-based dilution index. For given first and second-central moment, the spatially uniform log-normal breakthrough curve maximizes the dilution index. The ratio between observed and maximum dilution index is denoted reactor ratio. For a 300-compartment solute sampler, covering an area of 0.75 m2, we compute a reactor ratio of 0.665, compared with 0.04 for stochastic-convective and 1 for convective-dispersive transport. With a single, large collector the reactor ratio would be 0.958, severely underestimating concentration variations. Large collector areas are clearly inadequate to estimate dilution. Values of the dilution index and the reactor ratio for individual sampling compartments indicate efficient longitudinal mixing in most but not all cases, and considerable spatial variation of the leaching process.

This paper investigates the behaviour of US stock prices using an unrestricted two-regime threshold autoregressive (TAR) model with an autoregressive unit root. The TAR model is applied to monthly stock price (NYSE Common Stocks) data for the US for the period 1964:06 to 2003:04. Amongst our main results, we find that the US stock price is a nonlinear series that is characterized by a unit root process, consistent with the efficient market hypothesis.

The goal of this paper is to examine evidence for co-integration between nominal exchange rates for Canada, the UK, Japan, Germany, Italy and France (G6) vis-à-vis the US dollar, and the relative price ratios using monthly data over the period 1973:01 to 1997:04. Motivated by the fact that exchange rate adjustment may be asymmetric, we allowed for asymmetric adjustment in exchange rates by using the threshold autoregressive model and the momentum threshold autoregressive model. We do not find any evidence of a co-integrating relationship; hence, we fail to establish long-run purchasing power parity.
