In this paper, we investigated the Langmuir film and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) monolayer film of a nonionic amphiphilic molecule, 4-(6-p-pyridyloxyl)hexyloxyl-4′-dodecyloxylazobenzene (C12AzoC6Py) and its mixture with poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) at different subphase pH values (2.0, 2.6, 3.3, 4.4, and 6.5, respectively) by surface pressure–area (π–A) isotherms, in situ interface Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). For pure C12AzoC6Py, its π–A isotherms display a plateau when the subphase pH value is lower than 3.0. The pressure of the plateau increases with the decrease of pH until 2.0. Over the plateau, the π–A isotherms become almost identical to the one under neutral conditions. The appearance of such a plateau can be explained as the coexistence of protonation and unprotonation of pyridyl head groups of the employed amphiphile. In contrast to the homogeneous surface morphology of pure C12AzoC6Py near the plateau by BAM observation, the surface in the case of its mixing with PLG exhibits a dendritic crystalline state under low surface pressure at subphase pH lower than 3.0. The crystalline state becomes soft and gradually melts into homogeneous aggregates with surface pressure increasing to a higher value than that of the plateau. Meanwhile, the hydrolysis of PLG in the mixture system at the interface has been affirmed to be restrained to a very large extent. And the PLG was believed to be compelled to the up layer of the LB film due to the phase separation, which is examined by AFM. Based on the experimental results, the corresponding discussion was also performed.

A fundamental challenge to the timely diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the reliance on the observation of a set of aberrant behavior. Consequently, the diagnostic process requires that the child reach an age where the behaviors would typically be exhibited. The identification of a reliable biological marker (biomarker) could be of considerable benefit to the diagnostic process. As a diagnostic biomarker, porphyrins present an attractive prospect as previous studies have reported consistent findings of children with ASD showing significant elevations in porphyrin levels in contrast to controls. Furthermore, there is some evidence that ASD severity may be associated with porphyrins, which would be a valuable characteristic of any ASD biomarker. Importantly, for practical use, porphyrins can be tested non-invasively via a sample of urine. The present study sought to investigate whether porphyrin profiles can reliably be used to (a) differentiate ASD cases from healthy controls; and (b) predict ASD severity. The study compared the porphyrin levels of three groups of children aged 2-6 years: Group 1-children diagnosed with ASD (n = 70); Group 2-healthy, normally developing siblings of children diagnosed with ASD (n = 36); and Group 3-healthy, normally developing children with no known blood relative diagnosed with ASD (n = 54). The results of logistic regression analyses failed to find support for the hypotheses that porphyrin levels could be used as a valid tool to detect ASD cases or predict severity. A novel tri-block copolymer poly(oxopentanoate ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(pyridyl disulfide ethyl acrylate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol acrylate) [poly(OEMA-b-PDEA-b-PEGA)], retaining active keto groups and pyridyl disulfide (PDS) side functionalities, was synthesized as a drug delivery vehicle using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method. One mimic drug pyridine-2-thione (PT) was introduced into the monomer, PDEA for copolymerization. The other mimic drug O-benzylhydroxylamine (BHA) was conjugated with tri-block copolymer via efficient oxime coupling chemistry, followed by the attachment onto graphene via π-π stacking interaction to obtain a graphene/tri-block copolymer composite. 1H NMR, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to verify the successful step-wise preparation of the tri-block copolymer and drug loaded composite. In vitro release behaviors of BHA and PT from graphene/tri-block copolymer composite via dual drug release mechanisms were investigated. BHA can be released under acid environment, while PT will be released in the presence of reducing agents, such as dithiothreitol (DTT) or glutathione (GSH). It can be envisioned that this novel composite could be exploited as a novel intracellular drug delivery system via dual release mechanisms.

Incorporating phenylpyridine- and triazolylpyridine-based ligands decorated with methylsulfonate or tetraethylene glycol (TEG) groups, a series of iridium(III) complexes has been created for green and blue electrogenerated chemiluminescence under analytically useful aqueous conditions, with tri-n-propylamine as a coreactant. The relative electrochemiluminescence (ECL) intensities of the complexes were dependent on the sensitivity of the photodetector over the wavelength range and the pulse time of the applied electrochemical potential. In terms of the integrated area of corrected ECL spectra, with a pulse time of 0.5 s, the intensities of the Ir(III) complexes were between 18 and 102 % that of [Ru(bpy)3 ](2+) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine). However, when the intensities were measured with a typical bialkali photomultiplier tube, the signal of the most effective blue emitter, [Ir(df-ppy)2 (pt-TEG)](+) (df-ppy=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine anion, pt-TEG=1-(2-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)-4-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole), was over 1200 % that of the orange-red emitter [Ru(bpy)3 ](2+) . A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the Ir(III) complexes indicated that the greater intensity from [Ir(df-ppy)2 (pt-TEG)](+) relative to those of the other Ir(III) complexes resulted from a combination of many factors, rather than being significantly favored in one area.

A modular approach has been developed for the synthesis of rigid linear di- and tritopic ligands based on a fused [6]polynorbornane scaffold. The design provides up to three sites for installing functionality, including both "ends" and a "central" position with the advantage that each region can be independently addressed during synthesis. To illustrate the utility of the approach, both pyridyl and picolyl units were incorporated to provide six new ligands, with centers and ends either matched or mismatched. Indeed, both [M2 L4 ] cages with endohedral functionality and [M3 L4 ] complexes were cleanly produced from these ligands with assembled structures confirmed by using (1) H NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and molecular modelling.

A range of 1,4-substituted 2-pyridyl-N-phenyl triazoles were synthesised and evaluated for their antiproliferative properties against lymph node cancer of the prostate (LNCaP) and bone metastasis of prostate cancer (PC-3) cells. Excellent-to-low IC50 values were determined (5.6-250 μM), and a representative group of 4 ligands were then complexed to iridium(III) giving highly luminescent species. Re-evaluation of these compounds against both cell lines was then undertaken and improved potency (up to 72-fold) was observed, giving IC50 values of 0.36-11 μM for LNCaP and 0.85-5.9 μM for PC-3. Preliminary screens for in vivo toxicity were conducted using a zebrafish model showing a wide range of induced toxicity depending of the compound evaluated. Apoptosis and Caspase-3 levels were also determined and showed no statistical difference between some of the treated specimens and the controls. This study may identify novel therapeutic agents for advanced stage of prostate cancer in humans.
