As someone with Asperger's Syndrome, Wendy Lawson knows all about the social difficulties that accompany the condition. In this book, she guides others on the autism spectrum through the confusing map of life, tackling the building bricks of social existence one by one with humour, insight and practical suggestions. Exploring what it is like to be an adult in an alien world, she looks at the concepts of 'self' and 'other' and talks about the people in our lives -- how to relate to them, how we can use their support and how we can protect ourselves in the process. Using poetry and illustrations, she goes on to explain the difficult notion of putting on a face, looks at how to assess personal skills in order to develop them into a suitable career and how to deal with unwelcome changes in life. This book is essential reading for all those on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum, helping them to get the best out of a world that is often confusing and aiding those close to them to understand their perspective. The purpose of this article is to consider a peculiar type of will known in equity as a mutual will. The major focus is a consideration of the interplay of the legal effect of mutual wills and the practical use of such wills, It is hoped that this discussion will assist legal practitioners in identifying those clients who may benefit from executing mutual wills, identifying those clients who might intend to execute mutual wills, advising clients as to the pros and cons of mutual wills and the benefits of accompanying such wills with a deed or contract.

This paper formulates the problem of learning Bayesian network structures from data as determining the structure that best approximates the probability distribution indicated by the data. A new metric, Penalized Mutual Information metric, is proposed, and a evolutionary algorithm is designed to search for the best structure among alternatives. The experimental results show that this approach is reliable and promising.

In collaborative learning, instruction is learner-centered rather than teacher-centered and knowledge is viewed as a social construct, facilitated by peer interaction, evaluation and mutual support [1]. Such computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) enables and encourages learners to confer, reflect and help to develop meaningful learning in an environment where significant learning can be achieved through interactions supported by electronic communication and discourse [2]. This paper proposes a theory that supports educational collaboration in a peer-to-peer computing environment, thus blending the two disciplines.

We address the problem of adaptive blind source separation (BSS) from instantaneous multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels. It is known that the constant modulus (CM) criterion can be used to extract unknown source signals. However, the existing CM based algorithms normally extract the source signals in a serial manner. Consequently, the accuracy in extracting each source signal, except for the first one, depends on the accuracy of previous source extraction. This estimation error propagation (accumulation) causes severe performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive separation algorithm that can separate all source signals simultaneously by directly updating the separation matrix. The superior performance of the new algorithm is demonstrated by simulation examples

In this paper, we describe how a wiki has been used to help break the ice between cultures in an online subject. The number of International student enrollments has been on the increase in recent years and therefore the student demographics within the classroom have changed. It is the intension of this paper to show how a wiki has been implemented to promote interaction between students from different cultures.

For those waiting for tertiary offers and start dates, the next couple of months can be stressful. There is no "right" way to spend this time, but the following suggestions might be helpful in preparing for uni and keeping that stress at a minimum.

The aim of this study was to examine women's views on the usefulness of various types of information and practical sessions on weight control, their preferences for program delivery, and likelihood of participation. Cross-sectional survey of 462 women aged 18–33 years randomly selected from the community was conducted. We examined the perceived usefulness of various types of information and practical classes on weight control; preferred mode of delivery; willingness to participate. Among the women 82% were interested in trying to lose or control weight. Information on weight control was considered to be more useful than practical sessions. Information about meal planning, cooking and low-fat recipes and how to manage stress was considered most useful. Fifty-eight per cent of women reported they would prefer to participate in an individual face-to-face program delivered by a health professional. Thirty-one per cent of women reported it was very likely that they would participate in a program if it included the sort of things they considered useful and was offered in the way they preferred; a further 35% felt it 'likely'. It appears that health professional-delivered, individual, information-based programs appear most popular among this target group. Tailoring the content and delivery mode of weight management programs to young women's preferences may enhance program participation.

Purpose – The aim of this study is to identify the methods used by providers to evaluate their food services and identify elements of their service that would benefit from adopting a benchmarking system.

Design/methodology/approach – In-depth interviews were conducted with 26 food services providers and key informants in day-care settings in Surrey.

Findings – Few providers formally evaluated their service provision and most had not considered benchmarking their services against other food service providers. Factors such as food variety, food quality, cost and environment have been identified as issues that could be benchmarked and may benefit from the adoption of this process.

Research limitations/implications – The study was conducted only in one country – in the UK – further research is needed into the evaluation practices of other local authorities. The benchmarking model that has been developed by the authors needs to be applied in a food service setting to establish its usefulness to food service managers.

Practical implications – A model has been developed from the outcome of this research, which could aid evaluation processes for food service providers to identify aspects of the service in need of improvement.

Originality/value – There has been little research conducted on the evaluation of food service provision for older people, especially for congregate meals. This paper provides a model, that food service providers may find useful, to identify areas of their food services that are suitable for benchmarking.

This exploratory study examines the motivation for helping from the perspective of Generation X and Y. A study of 422 respondents was conducted to investigate their perception of helping based on intrinsic (social or community need) and extrinsic motivation (personal need). The findings suggested significant group differences. Although there was no significant main effect for motivation to help as a personal need (extrinsic motivation) across the generations, an examination of the social and community need (intrinsic motivation) indicated that generation X considered social and community need more important than Generation Y.

This paper tells a story of synergism of two cutting edge technologies — agents and data mining. By integrating these two technologies, the power for each of them is enhanced. Integrating agents into data mining systems, or constructing data mining systems from agent perspectives, the flexibility of data mining systems can be greatly improved. New data mining techniques can add to the systems dynamically in the form of agents, while the out-of-date ones can also be deleted from systems at run-time. Equipping agents with data mining capabilities, the agents are much smarter and more adaptable. In this way, the performance of these agent systems can be improved. A new way to integrate these two techniques –ontology-based integration is also discussed. Case studies will be given to demonstrate such mutual enhancement.

There exist many web design methodologies and the new ones are constantly being added to the pool of those offered to practitioners. However as previous research shows, practitioners either do not know, do not use or even do not care for these development approaches. This paper examines web design practice, and the design of visual aspects in particular, in order to establish whether any of the existing methodologies would actually address the practitioners concerns. Through grounded theory analysis, it transpires that from amongst several examined approaches, IS-based web design methods are dealing with great many practical issues which designers perceive as most pressing.
