As someone with Asperger's Syndrome, Wendy Lawson knows all about the social difficulties that accompany the condition. In this book, she guides others on the autism spectrum through the confusing map of life, tackling the building bricks of social existence one by one with humour, insight and practical suggestions. Exploring what it is like to be an adult in an alien world, she looks at the concepts of 'self' and 'other' and talks about the people in our lives -- how to relate to them, how we can use their support and how we can protect ourselves in the process. The study examined the impact of body mass index (BMI), negative affect, self-esteem, and sociocultural influences in the development of weight and muscle concerns among preadolescent boys. Body dissatisfaction, importance placed on weight and muscles, weight loss strategies, and strategies to increase muscles were evaluated. Participants were 237 boys aged between 8 and 11 years who were tested at three assessment periods 8 months apart. The main predictor of boys’ body change strategies was their perceived pressures to modify weight and muscles from parents, peers, and the media. The other main predictor of boys’ body change strategies and the sole predictor of body dissatisfaction was BMI. Self-esteem and negative affect were found to be weak and generally nonsignificant predictors of boys’ body image concerns and body change strategies. Additional studies that examine the risk and protective factors associated with boys’ weight and muscle concerns are needed to assist in the development of prevention programs for preadolescent boys.

The aim of this study was to assess the ability of the Demand-Control-Support (DCS) model as well as the psychological contract model (PCM) to predict the wellbeing experienced by 2,566 Australian police officers. While the level of explained variance attributed to the PCM was substantially less than the DCS, measures of contract breach and organisational fairness still captured significant portions of intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction. Overall, the results of this study suggest that both the DCS and the PCM should figure prominently in strategies aimed at reducing or preventing police stress.

It is found that geographic diversity, respect for differing beliefs, encouraging feedback, active participation and interaction with the students, and techniques such as active listening, contribute an architecture and atmosphere to student learning, teacher effectiveness and program excellence in virtual education. One functioning teaching team in University of Maryland University College’s online MBA program provides the action research foundation underpinning the findings. A widely dispersed team of academics and assistants have documented the ways they enhance educational information for students in the program. Assessment activities, supplementary communications and biographical information contribute to student perception of the quality of management education in the program. Mechanisms for effectively tapping a global faculty team are discussed and are informative for administrators and academics alike.

Outsourcing is generally framed in terms of benefits and cost savings, rather than risks. One important risk is “data theft”. This paper draws upon a longitudinal study into IT and business process outsourcing to present a theoretical model incorporating risk. Sources include qualitative interviews with purchasers, non purchasers, and vendors of outsourced business process services. It concludes that data theft is an under-acknowledged risk in all business process outsourcing (BPO), but is higher for offshore outsourcing. This risk may be mitigated, but when factored into the business case can invalidate typically small cost savings. In acknowledging and adequately costing this risk, decision-makers may find BPO, particularly where offshore vendors are involved, less attractive.

We discuss the emergence of the craft movement known as Stitch’nBitch. Prevalent around the globe, particularly among women, this movement organises in local places, such as hotels and cafes, and virtually using the Internet. The women meet to knit, stitch and talk, using new technologies as an enabler and resource exchange. At the same time, their presence can be seen, in part, as a response to social and technological changes, both at work and in wider society. We introduce five themes to assist in the interpretation of this new form of organising, discussing (1) remedial, (2) progressive, (3) resistance, (4) nostalgic, and (5) ironic possibilities and we draw on illustrative interview data to outline possibilities for further research.

Faced with increasing environmental complexity and uncertainty, organisations have been urged to replace traditional bureaucratic structures with more flexible, responsive forms of organising. However, the emerging paradox is that exploration and experimentation, features of new forms of organising, benefit from the planning, coordinating and direction-setting mechanisms that underpin traditional forms of organising. It is therefore important to recognise the distinctive and complementary features of traditional and new forms of organising. This demands a dualities-sensitive perspective which encourages, rather than tries to resolve, a constructive tension between seemingly contradictory organising forms such as flexibility and efficiency, autonomy and control, hierarchy and networks, focus and diversification. Managing continuity and change through forms of organising becomes central to building healthy organisations.

This paper reports on a national survey which identified priorities that are considered important to the success of Australian family businesses. The FBA and KPMG Family Business Needs Survey 2005 targeted organisations of all sizes and industries across all states. Findings from the survey are extensive and provide noteworthy progress in understanding the issues deemed most important to family businesses, such as balancing family concerns and business interests, balancing short-term and long-term business decisions and increasing profits. As a result of this project, it has: provided an instrument that will allow research investigation on an annual basis; provided initial data sets that highlight key issues facing family business survival; and provided a substantial data set that can be utilised by a range of researchers and practitioners.

This paper examines performance appraisals in Australian universities. It identifies the political imperatives which drove the changes in higher education and saw the inculcation of managerial practices, one of which was performance appraisals, into academia. The paper then briefly examines the history of performance appraisals in Australian universities and identifies questions for further research.

The Australian government is currently committed to the goal of increasing organisational participation in employee share ownership plans (ESOP) from 4% of all companies to 11% by 2009. The Nelson Report into ESOPs commissioned by the Honourable Brendan Nelson highlighted the lack of comprehensive information on the nature and extent of ESO plans in Australia. ” (Nelson 2000). This paper places the program in context by reviewing overseas experiences and considers the viewpoints of both employers and employees. The preliminary investigation concludes by highlighting the need for further thorough research before success for all types of businesses can be confidently predicted. ”

The freshman year of college is a period of heightened risk for weight gain. This study examined measures of restrained eating, disinhibition, and emotional eating as predictors of weight gain during the freshman year. Using Lowe's multi-factorial model of dieting, it also examined three different types of dieting as predictors of weight gain. Sixty-nine females were assessed at three points during the school year. Weight gain during the freshman year averaged 2.1 kg. None of the traditional self-report measures of restraint, disinhibition, or emotional eating were predictive of weight gain. However, both a history of weight loss dieting and weight suppression (discrepancy between highest weight ever and current weight) predicted greater weight gain, and these effects appeared to be largely independent of one another. Individuals who said they were currently dieting to lose weight gained twice as much (5.0 kg) as former dieters (2.5 kg) and three times as much as never dieters (1.6 kg), but the import of this finding was unclear because there was only a small number of current dieters (N=7). Overall the results indicate that specific subtypes of dieting predicts weight gain during the freshman year better than more global measures of restraint or overeating.
