Double perovskite Ba2Bi0.1Sc0.2Co1.7O6-x (BBSC) demonstrates low polarization resistance between 600 and 750 °C due to the high oxygen reduction rate of BBSC as reflected by its large DV and k values, which are derived from the face centered cubic structure and high cobalt content.

Perovskite-type oxide LaCoO3 nanofibers have been fabricated by electrospinning and subsequent calcination technology. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the morphology and structure. Rhodamine B (RhB) was used to evaluate the ultraviolet photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared nanofibers. The effect of calcination temperature and pH of the reaction solution on the decolorization of RhB were investigated. Results showed that the samples calcined at 600°C exhibited the best photocatalytic activity at pH 4. Additionally, the recycling experiments confirmed the attractive stability of the catalysts.

A concise synthesis of two imidazolium ion-tagged prolinamide organocatalysts 3 and 4, varying in anionic component (CF3COO- and PF6 -, respectively) is presented. The latter could be classified as an ionic liquid with a melting point of 66.3 °C, and glass transition temperature of 14.5 °C. The efficiency of each catalyst was compared via a direct aldol reaction revealing a large contrast in catalytic performance, with the catalyst bearing the PF6 - anion being superior. The optimal conditions were determined to be an on-water reaction system, and substrate scoping gave a range of desired aldol products in high conversion (up to >99 %), dr (up to 98:2), and er (up to 96:4). The application of these catalysts to beta-nitrostyrene conjugate addition is also presented. Graphical Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

We describe the history, construction, and use of a portable walk-in wader trap (i.e., modified Ottenby trap) designed to be used in field expedition conditions. It is rectangular-shaped, 120 × 41 × 32 cm when operational, weighs between 1.5 and 2 kg (depending on materials used) and can be folded flat for easy transportation. It consists of several metal frames filled with fishing net, and has a netted roof attached by an elastic chord. Traps are placed either singly or in groups, with the optimal trapping situation occurring when birds are feeding along some kind of leading line such as the edge of a estuary, lake, or other water body. The trap is highly efficient for waders up to around 100 g, but is also suitable for ground-feeding passerines.

Abstract The incorporation of a high percentage of targeting molecules into drug delivery system is one of the important methods for improving efficacy of targeting therapeutic drugs to cancer cells. PLGA-based drug delivery carriers with folic acid (FA) as targeting molecule have a low targeting efficiency due to a low FA conjugation ratio. In this work, we fabricated a FA-conjugated PLGA system using a crosslinker 1, 3-diaminopropane and have achieved a high conjugation ratio of 46.7% (mol/mol). The as-prepared PLGA-based biomaterial was used to encapsulate therapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) into nanoparticles. In the in vitro experiments, an IC50 of 5.69 µg/mL has been achieved for 5-FU loaded PLGA-1, 3-diaminopropane-folic acid nanoparticles on HT-29 cancer cells and is significantly lower than that of 5-FU and 5-FU loaded PLGA nanoparticles which only have an IC50 of 22.9 and 14.17 µg/mL, respectively. The fluorescent microscopy images showed that nanoparticles with FA are largely taken up by HT-29 cancer cells and the targeting nanoparticles have more affinity to cancer cells than the pure drugs and untreated nanoparticles. Therefore, the 1, 3-diaminopropane can facilitate the conjugation of FA to PLGA to form a novel polymer and 5-FU loaded PLGA-1, 3-diaminopropane-folic acid nanoparticles can be a highly efficient system for specific delivery of drugs to cancer cells.

While capitalism has long made highly efficient ideological use of Darwin's 'survival of the fittest' principle to justify ruthless business practices, this appropriation of animal metaphor has taken on new and considerably more problematic resonances in the wake of globalization. At a time when the negative consequences of corporate greed are becoming more apparent, as inequalities widen and power is shifted beyond governments and their borders, there is a spate of children's novels that explicitly challenges this new world order.

This article gives an overview of our recent research into separation and detection of analytes of forensic interest. This work has been carried out in collaboration with local forensic service providers and is based on our previous studies of chemiluminescence detection, flow analysis and capillary electrophoresis as applied to process analytical chemistry for the pharmaceutical industry. Chemiluminescence has the potential to provide low limits of detection in combination with high selectivity, while capillary electrophoresis allows for rapid, highly efficient separations. Examples of recent forensic applications are presented and future directions are discussed.

We report on the use of a radially polarized beam for photothermal therapy of cancer cells labeled with gold nanorods. Due to a three-dimensionally distributed electromagnetic field in the focal volume, the radially polarized beam is proven to be a highly efficient laser mode to excite gold nanorods randomly oriented in cancer cells. As a result, the energy fluence for effective cancer cell damage is reduced to one fifth of that required for a linearly polarized beam, which is only 9.3% of the medical safety level.

Conducting polymers-based gas sensors have attracted increasing research attention these years. The introduction of inorganic sensitizers (noble metals or inorganic semiconductors) within the conducting polymers-based gas sensors has been regarded as the generally effective route for further enhanced sensors. Here we demonstrate a novel route for highly-efficient conducting polymers-based gas sensors by introduction of polymeric sensitizers (polymeric adsorbent) within the conducting polymeric nanostructures to form onedimensional polymeric adsorbent/conducting polymer core−shell nanocomposites, via electrospinning and solution-phase polymerization. The adsorption effect of the SPEEK toward NH3 can facilitate the mass diffusion of NH3 through the PPy layers, resulting in the enhanced sensing signals. On the basis of the SPEEK/PPy nanofibers, the sensors exhibit large gas responses, even when exposed to very low concentration of NH3 (20 ppb) at room temperature.

RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) transcription and pre-mRNA 3' end formation are linked through physical and functional interactions. We describe here a highly efficient yeast in vitro system that reproduces both transcription and 3' end formation in a single reaction. The system is based on simple whole-cell extracts that were supplemented with a hybrid Gal4-VP16 transcriptional activator and supercoiled plasmid DNA templates encoding G-less cassette reporters. We found that the coupling of transcription and processing in vitro enhanced pre-mRNA 3' end formation and reproduced requirements for poly(A) signals and polyadenylation factors. Unexpectedly, however, we show that in vitro transcripts lacked m⁷G-caps. Reconstitution experiments with CF IA factor assembled entirely from heterologous components suggested that the CTD interaction domain of the Pcf11 subunit was required for proper RNAP II termination but not 3' end formation. Moreover, we observed reduced termination activity associated with extracts prepared from cells carrying a mutation in the 5'-3' exonuclease Rat1 or following chemical inhibition of exonuclease activity. Thus, in vitro transcription coupled to pre-mRNA processing recapitulates hallmarks of poly(A)-dependent RNAP II termination. The in vitro transcription/processing system presented here should provide a useful tool to further define the role of factors involved in coupling.
