During the conduct of a research project into influences on the use of management accounting information, the use of activity-based techniques and information in two British banks was studied by the application of grounded theory principles. Juxtaposition of these two case studies reveals insights about the managers' significantly different experiences of ongoing applications, and the different outcomes of implementation that may arise, despite commonality in the organization and industry environment. This paper presents these two case studies, highlights the similarities and differences between them, and draws some conclusions about the causes of the differences. Factors that can be managed to achieve a greater use of these particular management accounting techniques, and the information they generate, are revealed. In particular, the findings suggest that the introduction of transfer charging between the bank's internal units highlights the need for activity-based techniques, and that education, communication and implementor support are vital, both for implementation success and for the widespread continuing use of the resultant applications. Further, between the two cases the greatest consensus was found in a common concern about the amount of detail in the databank and reports.

We developed a method for obtaining viable buccal cells from mouthwash samples for use as a source of mRNA and protein. Immunofluorescent analysis showed that most cells were derived from nonkeratinized parabasal epithelia, with a minor proportion of proliferative cells. Gene expression was detected in buccal cells using reverse transcription PCR, Western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence. Using a keratinocyte-specific medium, buccal cells could be cultured on Matrigel™-coated permeable filters for up to 2 weeks while maintaining the expression of some epithelial-specific markers, including cytokeratin 13, cytokeratin 10, transferrin receptor, and β-integrin. The basal marker cytokeratin 14 and Ki67, an indicator of cellular proliferation, were detected in a few cells. We show that buccal cells can be obtained from a noninvasive procedure for use as a source of material for biochemical analyses. A population of the buccal cells can be maintained in culture for up to 2 weeks using keratinocyte-specific medium in combination with extracellular matrix.

The topic of “comfort letters” is an ongoing debate in Australia. There are arguments for and against enforceability of comfort letters, yet little has been said about how the “law” can be reformed. In support of enforceability, this article provides a comparative perspective on the American and Australian models and suggests that certain principles from the former could be adopted in Australia to eliminate the inconsistency in the treatment of comfort letter cases. The article also analyses Gate Gourmet and Lasalle Bank, two recent cases from Australia and the United States, respectively.

Hurdle technology employs the intelligent combination of different preservation factors to achieve mild but reliable preservation effects. Fresh coconut gratings treated with different combinations of hurdles such as acidulants, humectants, preservatives, antioxidants, a mild heat treatment and packaging were evaluated for changes in physicochemical and sensory properties. It is possible to preserve the grating for four weeks in laminated polythene packages at 5 degrees C in combination with 3% sodium chloride, 0.3% citric acid, 0.009% sodium citrate, 0.02% butylated hydroxyanisole.

The Fresh Kids programme utilized the Health Promoting Schools (HPSs) framework to design a whole-of-school, multifaceted intervention targeting specific behaviours to promote healthy eating and reduce the risk factors associated with childhood obesity. The aim of the programme was to evaluate the effectiveness of the HPS framework to increase fruit and water consumption among primary school-aged children over a 2-year period. The study design was an interrupted time series. Four primary schools in the inner west of Melbourne, Australia, participated in the programme intervention. Baseline data were collected using a lunch box audit to assess the frequency of children with fresh fruit, water and sweet drinks, either brought from home or selected from canteen lunch orders. The lunch box audit was repeated periodically for up to 2 years following programme implementation to assess the sustainability of dietary changes. Across all participating schools, significant increases between 25 and 50% were observed in the proportion of children bringing fresh fruit. Similarly, all schools recorded increases between 15 and 60% in the proportion of students bringing filled water bottles to school and reductions between 8 and 38% in the proportion of children bringing sweet drinks. These significant changes in dietary patterns were sustained for up to 2 years following programme implementation. Targeting key nutrition behaviours and using the HPS framework is an effective and simple approach which could be readily implemented in similar childhood settings. Effective strategies include facilitating organizational change within the school; integrating curriculum activities; formalizing school policy and establishing project partnerships with local community nutrition and dietetic services.

The new translations of Freud into English highlight the question as to the nature of Freud's quest and achievement. They show a livelier Freud than the Strachey translations (Freud, 1953-1974), who used everyday language in his work instead of trying to establish a new technical vocabulary for an esoteric new discipline. However, with the new Penguin editions thus far, fresh Freud is no longer lost in translation. The Standard Edition was created importantly to create an authoritative international trademark and was made more natural "scientific" in appearance. The fresh translations show a Freud in tune with Karl Popper's (1976) approach in his later work that viewed science as essentially problem solving. The example of "Mourning and Melancholia" (Freud, 1917/ 1964, 1917/1981, 1917/2005) is discussed as an exercise in exploration, conjectures, criticism, construct formation, and problem solving. Translation issues are discussed. Instead of being a particular trade mark, the very fact of there being new and different translations opens Freud's works to further questioning about their meanings and intents in the marketplace of ideas and practices

Helicoverpa spp. is the primary pest in the Australian fresh-market tomato industry. We describe the spatial distribution of Helicoverpa spp. eggs on fresh-market tomato crops in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, and present a sequential sampling plan for monitoring population densities. The distribution of Helicoverpa spp. eggs was highly contagious, as indicated by a Taylor's b-value of 1.59. This high level of contagion meant that relatively large sample sizes would need to be collected to obtain an estimate of population density. High-precision sampling plans generally necessitated impractical sample sizes, and thus the plan we present is a relatively low-precision level plan (SE/mean = 0.3). Nonetheless, this level of precision is considered adequate for most agronomic scenarios. The plan was validated using a statistical re-sampling approach. The level of precision achieved was generally close to the nominal level. Likewise, the number of samples collected generally showed little departure from the theoretically calculated minimum sample size.

A series of three experiments were conducted with second cross ([Merino×Border Leicester]×Poll Dorset) wether lambs to evaluate the effects of dietary treatments on manipulation of muscle long-chain (LC) omega-3 fatty acids (FA) on the color stability and oxidative stability of fresh and vacuum packaged lamb. At the end of 7-, 6- and 6-week experimental periods for experiments (Exp.) 1–3 respectively, lambs were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. At 24 h post-mortem, muscle longissimus lumborum (LL) and longissimus thoracis (LT) were removed and evaluated for color and lipid oxidative stability under specified commercial storage and display condition. Of the dietary supplements used, fish meal and fish oil moderately (P<0.01) and markedly (P<0.001) increased muscle omega-3 FA content, while both protected canola seed (P<0.001) and protected sunflower meal protein significantly (P<0.02) increased muscle omega-6 FA content or ratio of omega-6/omega-3 of the longissimus muscle. In all experiments, the substantial increase (P<0.001) in muscle LC omega-3 and omega-6 FA had no consistent significant effect on color values (redness (a*), yellowness (b*) and lightness (L*)) for fresh and vacuum packaged lamb over a 6-day display period. Lipid oxidation, determined by the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) indicated the enrichment of muscle polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels in lambs did not produce significant differences resulting either from main treatment effects or for treatment×day×type interactions (where type was fresh and vacuum packaged). Present results demonstrated the color and lipid oxidative stability of lamb longissimus muscle during refrigerated display was not affected by enhanced levels of omega-3 and omega-6 FA due to dietary treatments.

The research aims to gain a deeper understanding of direct buyer-supplier relationships within the Australian fresh produce industry. Specifically, dependence and power within the buyer-supplier relationship are considered in terms of their antecedents and their relationships their-in. In-depth interviews with buyers and suppliers provided the means by which to expose perceptions with regard to the relative importance of dependence and power within the relationship. The research reveals that relationship antecedents (trading offer: price and quality) impact power and dependence and are, in tum, impacted by them.
