We explore the equilibrium properties of two types of "difference-form" persuasion contest functions derived in Skaperdas and Vaidya in which contestants spend resources to persuade an audience. We find that both types of functions generate interior pure strategy Nash equilibria unlike Baik and Che and Gale with characteristics different to existing literature. For one type of function, we find that the reaction function of each player is "flat" and nonresponsive to the level of resources devoted by the rival so that the "preemption effect" as defined by Che and Gale is absent. Further, the equilibrium is invariant to the sequencing of moves. For the second type of function, which applies when there is asymmetry among contestants with regard to the quality of evidence, we find that the reaction functions of the stronger and weaker players have gradients with opposite signs relative to Dixit and therefore their incentive to precommit expenditures in a sequential move game is also different. For both types of functions, the extent of rent dissipation is partial. From the equilibrium analysis, we are also able to establish the potential effects of some specific factors affecting persuasion such as evidence potency, the degree of truth, and bias on aggregate resource expenditures and welfare.

The aim of this paper was to develop a process for the production of DAG from butterfat through glycerolysis and short-path distillation and to evaluate the physical properties of the DAG in comparison with the original butterfat. Chemical glycerolysis produced a mixture of acylglycerols containing DAG together with MAG and TAG. From the mixture of glycerolysis products, MAG were removed through three consecutive distillations (vacuum <0.001 mbar) at 150°C. TAG were separated from DAG by distillation at 210°C, which gave a product with more than 80% DAG in the distillates. Distillation temperatures had significant effects on acyl migration. The formation of desirable 1,3-DAG was favored at higher temperatures. Under 210°C distillation, the equilibrium ratio of 6∶4 was obtained between 1,3-DAG and 1,2(2,3)-DAG. The FA profile of the DAG product was relatively similar to the original butterfat. The total DAG recovery was around 77% in the pilot-scale production. The different patterns of m.p. were observed between butterfat and the DAG fraction produced as well as the MAG fraction collected. Solid fat content profiles of the DAG fraction and its mixtures with rapeseed oil possessed trends similar to those of the corresponding butterfat and its mixtures with rapeseed oil. Compared with butterfat, the DAG fraction behaved differently in its thermal profiles, crystallization patterns, and rheological properties; for example, the dropping point was 13°C higher for the latter than for the former, and the crystal pattern was mostly β form for the latter, whereas the former was the β′ form.

A wool fabric has been subjected to an atmospheric-pressure treatment with a helium plasma for 30 seconds. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed removal of the covalently-bound fatty acid layer (F-layer) from the surface of the wool fibers, resulting in exposure of the underlying, hydrophilic protein material. Dye uptake experiments were carried out at 50 ºC to evaluate the effects of plasma on the rate of dye uptake by the fiber surface, as well as give an indication of the adsorption characteristics in the early stages of a typical dyeing cycle. The dyes used were typical, sulfonated wool dyes with a range of hydrophobic characteristics, as determined by their partitioning behavior between water and n-butanol. No significant effects of plasma on the rate of dye adsorption were observed with relatively hydrophobic dyes. In contrast, the relatively hydrophilic dyes were adsorbed more rapidly (and uniformly) by the plasma-treated fabric. It was concluded that adsorption of hydrophobic dyes on plasma-treated wool was influenced by hydrophobic interactions, whereas electrostatic effects predominated for dyes of more hydrophilic character. On heating the dyebath to 90 ºC in order to achieve fiber penetration, no significant effect of the plasma treatment on the extent of uptake or levelness of a relatively hydrophilic dye was observed as equilibrium conditions were approached.

The effects of solvent uptake on the relaxation behaviour, morphology and mechanical properties of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), poly(etherimide) (PEI) and a 50/50 PEEK/PEI blend have been investigated. Amorphous films were immersed in acetone at 25°C, 35°C and 45°C until equilibrium uptake was achieved. The films were then examined by wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.), dynamic mechanical relaxation spectroscopy and mechanical testing. WAXS and d.s.c. revealed that the degree of solvent induced crystallinity in PEEK is constant with immersion temperature, whereas the degree of induced crystallinity in the 50/50 blend is strongly temperature dependent. The dynamic mechanical studies confirmed that a significant decrease in glass transition temperature results from the plasticizing effect of the solvent and that solvent and thermally crystallized samples have different relaxation characteristics. Mechanical property tests showed that the yield stress and tensile strength of the blend are dominated by PEEK and the degree of crystallinity, while the modulus is more sensitive to the extent of plasticization.

Silk is a structural protein fiber that is stable over a wide pH range making it attractive for use in medical and environmental applications. Variation in amino acid composition has the potential for selective binding for ions under varying conditions. Here we report on the metal ion separation potential of Mulberry and Eri silk fibers and powders over a range of pH. Highly sensitive radiotracer probes, 64Cu2+, 109Cd2+, and 57Co2+ were used to study the absorption of their respective stable metal ions Cu2+, Cd2+, and Co2+ into and from the silk sorbents. The total amount of each metal ion absorbed and time taken to reach equilibrium occurred in the following order: Cu2+ > Cd2+ > Co 2+. In all cases the silk powders absorbed metal ions faster than their respective silk fibers. Intensive degumming of the fibers and powders significantly reduced the time to absorb respective metal ions and the time to reach equilibrium was reduced from hours to 5-15 min at pH 8. Once bound, 45-100% of the metal ions were released from the sorbents after exposure to pH 3 buffer for 30 min. The transition metal ion loading capacity for the silk sorbents was considerably higher than that found for commercial ion exchange resins (AG MP-50 and AG 50W-X2) under similar conditions. Interestingly, total Cu2+ bound was found to be higher than theoretically predicted values based on known specific Cu2+ binding sites (AHGGYSGY), suggesting that additional (new) sites for transition metal ion binding sites are present in silk fibers.

The plausibility of the entropic repulsion of electrical double layers acting to stabilize an equilibrium thickness of intergranular glass films in polycrystalline ceramics is explored. Estimates of the screening length, surface potential, and surface charge required to provide a repulsive force sufficiently large to balance the attractive van der Waals and capillary forces for observable thicknesses of intergranular film are calculated and do not appear to be beyond possibility. However, it has yet to be established whether crystalline particles in a liquid-phase sintering medium possess an electrical double layer at high temperatures. If they do, such a surface charge layer may well have important consequences not only for liquid-phase sintering but also for high-frequency electrical properties and microwave sintering of ceramics containing a liquid phase.

In this paper we derive conditions under which optimal tax rates for addictive goods exceed tax rates for non-addictive consumption goods within a rational addiction framework where exogenous government spending cannot be financed with lump sum taxes. We reexamine classic results on optimal commodity taxation and find a rich set of new findings. Two dynamic effects exist. First, households anticipating higher future addictive tax rates reduce current addictive consumption, so they will be less addicted when the tax rate increases. Therefore, addictive tax revenue falls prior to the tax increase. Surprisingly, the optimal tax rate on addictive goods is generally decreasing in the strength of tolerance, since strong tolerance strengthens this tax anticipation effect. Second, high current tax rates on addictive goods make households less addicted in the future, affecting all future tax revenues in a way which depends on how elasticities are changing over time. Classic results on uniform commodity taxation emerge as special cases when elasticities are constant and the addiction function is homogeneous of degree one. Finally, we also study features of addictive goods such as complementarity to leisure that, while not directly related to the definition of addiction, are nonetheless properties many addictive goods display.
