Weight reduction increased the amount of deposited polypyrrole (PPy) on the polyester (PET) fiber surface, leading to a considerable decrease in electrical resistance and improved heat generation capacity for the PPy coated PET fabrics. Application of dc voltages to an insulated roll of PPy-coated fabric increased the temperature to about 90 °C. This showed the suitability of these fabrics for heating applications. The optimum PPy deposition of about 2.8% was obtained in samples weight reduced by aqueous sodium hydroxide treatment. AFM images revealed a smooth surface morphology of the untreated fiber whereas the treated fiber had a high surface roughness.

The main purpose of this study was producing conductive wool fabric applying carbon nanotubes. Raw and oxidized wool samples were treated with carbon nanotubes in the impregnating bath in the presence of citric acid as a crosslinking agent and sodium hypophosphite as a catalyst while sonicating them in the ultrasonic bath. Electrical resistance, washing durability, and color variation of treated samples were assessed. Through SEM images, the surface morphology of treated samples was studied confirming the surface coating through carbon nanotubes. According to the results, the electrical resistance of treated wool with carbon nanotubes reduced substantially. However, the single-walled carbon nanotubes are more useful to increase the conductivity. In addition, the wool color changed into gray after the treatment.

Electrically conductive, mechanically tough hydrogels based on a double network (DN) comprised of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PPEGMA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were produced. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was chemically polymerized within the tough DN gel to provide electronic conductivity. The effects of pH on the tensile and compressive mechanical properties of the fully swollen hydrogels, along with their electrical conductivity and swelling ratio were determined. Compressive and tensile strengths as high as 11.6 and 0.6 MPa, respectively, were obtained for hydrogels containing PEDOT with a maximum conductivity of 4.3 S cm–1. This conductivity is the highest yet reported for hydrogel materials of high swelling ratios. These hydrogels may be useful as soft strain sensors because their electrical resistance changed significantly when cyclically loaded in compression.

Biopolymer-single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-biopolymer fibers were prepared using a continuous flow spinning approach. Polyelectrolyte complexation was facilitated by injecting a SWNT-biopolymer dispersion into a coagulation bath containing a biopolymer of opposite charge. We showed that the ability to spin fibers and their properties depend on processing conditions such as polyelectrolyte pH, sonolysis regime (conditions employed to disperse SWNT) and the order of adding the anionic and cationic biopolymer solutions. Maximizing the ionic nature through changes in the pH increased spin-ability, while combining a sonicated dispersion with an as-prepared (non-sonicated) polyelectrolyte solution allowed us to optimize sonolysis conditions while retaining spin-ability of fibers with smooth surface morphology. Addition of the cationic biopolymer-SWNT dispersion to the anionic biopolymer solution resulted in mechanical reinforcement with the increase in SWNT loading fraction. All fibers decreased their electrical resistance upon exposure to water vapor.

V-sections were roll formed from two grades of steel, and the strain on the top and bottom of the strip near the edge was measured using electrical resistance strain gauges. The channels were bent to a radius of 2 and 15 mm along the centerline. The steel strips were of mild and dual phase steel of yield strength 367 MPa and 597 MPa respectively. The longitudinal bow was measured using a 3-dimensional scanning system. The strain measurements were analysed to determine bending and mid-surface strains at the edge during forming. The peak longitudinal edge strain increased with material yield strength for both profile radii. For the 15 mm radius, the bow was larger in the dual phase steel than in the mild steel. For the 2 mm profile radius, the bow was smaller compared with the 15 mm profile radius and it was similar for both steels. It was observed that the difference between the peak longitudinal edge strain and yield strength to Youngs modulus ratio of the material is an important factor in determining longitudinal bow.

Flexible sensors capable of detecting large strain are very useful for health monitoring and sport applications. Here a strain sensor is prepared by applying a thin layer of conducting polymer, polypyrrole (PPy), onto the fiber surface of an elastic fibrous membrane, electrospun polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The sensor shows a normal monotonic resistance response to strain in the range of 0–50%, but the response becomes “on-off switching” mode when the strain is between 100 and 200%. Both response modes are reversible and can work repeatedly for many cycles. This unique sensing behavior is attributed to overstretching of the polypyrrole coating, unique fibrous structure, and elasticity of PDMS fibers. It may be useful for monitoring the states where motions are only allowed in a particular range such as joint rehabilitation.

The effects of pyrrole, anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid (AQSA) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) concentrations, reaction time and temperature on the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole (PPy) - coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were investigated. With an increase in both the AQSA and FeCl3 concentrations, resistivity decreased to a point beyond which higher concentrations led to increased surface resistivity. Erosion of the polymer coating, in dynamic synthesis from continual abrasion, manifested as an exponential increase in the resistance of the coated textile substrate. This was not encountered in static synthesis conditions. Temperature affected the degree of surface and bulk polymerisation. The effect of polymerisation temperature on conductivity was negligible. Conductive polymer coating on textiles through chemical polymerisation enabled a smooth coherent film to encase individual fibres, which did not affect the tactile properties of the host substrate. The optimum FeCl3/pyrrole and AQSA FeCl3/pyrrole molar ratios were found to be 2.22 and 0.40 respectively.

We present a novel scheme for node localization in a Delay-Tolerant Sensor Network (DTN). In a DTN, sensor devices are often organized in network clusters that may be mutually disconnected. Some mobile robots may be used to collect data from the network clusters. The key idea in our scheme is to use this robot to perform location estimation for the sensor nodes it passes based on the signal strength of the radio messages received from them. Thus, we eliminate the processing constraints of static sensor nodes and the need for static reference beacons. Our mathematical contribution is the use of a Robust Extended Kalman Filter (REKF)-based state estimator to solve the localization. Compared to the standard extended Kalman filter, REKF is computationally efficient and also more robust. Finally, we have implemented our localization scheme on a hybrid sensor network test bed and show that it can achieve node localization accuracy within 1m in a large indoor setting.

In this paper we improve the guidance system performance via sensor fusion techniques. Vision based guidance systems can be improved in performance via radar tacking or employing video tracking by unmanned jying vehicles. We also introduce an image texture gradient based image segmentation technique to identify the target in a typical surface-to-air type application with the proposed Robust Extended Kalman Filter based state estimation technique for the implementation of the Proportional Navigation guidance controlleller.

Wireless sensor networks represent a new generation of real-time  embedded systems with significantly different communication constraints from the traditional networked systems. With their development, a new attack called a path-based DoS (PDoS) attack has appeared. In a PDoS attack, an adversary, either inside or outside the network, overwhelms sensor nodes by flooding a multi-hop endto- end communication path with either replayed packets or injected spurious packets. In this article, we propose a solution using mobile agents which can detect PDoS attacks easily.

In this paper we characterize the relative sensor-target geometry for bearing-only localization in R2. We analyze the geometry in terms of the Cramer-Rao inequality and the corresponding Fisher information matrix, aiming to characterize and state explicit results in terms of the potential localization performance. In particular, a number of interesting results are rigorously derived which highlight erroneous assumptions often made in the existing literature.

A commonly employed method of corrosion rate measurement is to determine the electrochemical impedance of the corroding material. One technique for estimating the impedance is the noise impedance calculation. While it has been shown to yield useful results, there are a number of problems that require attention. This paper identifies some of those problems-specifically, those of detrending and resolution-and provides a solution that allows continuous, time-varying noise resistance and noise impedance calculations to be performed with known time, frequency, and magnitude resolutions. Applications to synthetic and experimental data are included as illustrations

It is a challenge to retain the high stretchability of an elastomer when used in polymer composites. Likewise, the high conductivity of organic conductors is typically compromised when used as filler in composite systems. Here, it is possible to achieve elastomeric fiber composites with high electrical conductivity at relatively low loading of the conductor and, more importantly, to attain mechanical properties that are useful in strain-sensing applications. The preparation of homogenous composite formulations from polyurethane (PU) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) that are also processable by fiber wet-spinning techniques are systematically evaluated. With increasing PEDOT:PSS loading in the fiber composites, the Young's modulus increases exponentially and the yield stress increases linearly. A model describing the effects of the reversible and irreversible deformations as a result of the re-arrangement of PEDOT:PSS filler networks within PU and how this relates to the electromechanical properties of the fibers during the tensile and cyclic stretching is presented. Conducting elastomeric fibers based on a composite of polyurethane (PU) and PEDOT:PSS, produced by a wet-spinning method, have high electrical conductivity and stretchability. These fibers can sense large strains by changes in resistance. The PU/PEDOT:PSS fiber is optimized to achieve the best strain sensing. PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers can be produced on a large scale and integrated into conventional textiles by weaving or knitting. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
