This paper introduces an aggregation algorithm for airborne swarming guided weapon systems, which can aggregate munitions into a given shape while reaching the surface. The algorithm uses an artificial force based controller to navigate the members of the swarm into the desired geographical position and evenly distribute them inside the shape. Inter-member repulsion forces are used to avoid collisions among members, which is crucial for a weapon deployment system. Moreover, a lower bound for the release height was obtained which guarantee convergence of the complete weapon system into the target area. The proposed swarming guided weapon system was tested using computer simulations.

The single factor limiting the harnessing of the enormous computing power of clusters for parallel computing is the lack of appropriate software. Present cluster operating systems are not built to support parallel computing – they do not provide services to manage parallelism. The cluster operating environments that are used to assist the execution of parallel applications do not provide support for both Message Passing (MP) or Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) paradigms. They are only offered as separate components implemented at the user level as library and independent servers. Due to poor operating systems users must deal with computers of a cluster rather than to see this cluster as a single powerful computer. A Single System Image of the cluster is not offered to users. There is a need for an operating system for clusters. We claim and demonstrate that it is possible to develop a cluster operating system that is
able to efficiently manage parallelism, support Message Passing and DSM and offer the Single System Image. In order to substantiate the claim the first version of a cluster operating system, called GENESIS, that manages parallelism and offers the Single System Image has been developed.

Fuzzy logic provides a mathematical formalism for a unified treatment of vagueness and imprecision that are ever present in decision support and expert systems in many areas. The choice of aggregation operators is crucial to the behavior of the system that is intended to mimic human decision making. This paper discusses how aggregation operators can be selected and adjusted to fit empirical data—a series of test cases. Both parametric and nonparametric regression are considered and compared. A practical application of the proposed methods to electronic implementation of clinical guidelines is presented

Present operating systems are not built to support parallel computing––they do not provide services to manage parallelism, i.e., to globally manage parallel processes and computational resources. The cluster operating environments that are used to assist the execution of parallel applications do not provide support for both programming paradigms, message passing (MP) or distributed shared memory (DSM)––they are mainly offered as separate components implemented at the user level as library and independent server processes. Due to poor operating systems users must deal with clusters as a set of independent computers rather than to see this cluster as a single powerful computer. A single system image (SSI) of the cluster is not offered to users. There is a need for an operating system for clusters. We claim and demonstrate in this paper that it is possible to develop a cluster operating system that is able to efficiently manage parallelism; use cluster resources efficiently; support MP in the form of standard MP and PVM, and DSM; offer SSI; and make it easy to use. We show that to achieve these aims this operating system should inherit many features of a distributed operating system and provide new services which address the needs of parallel processes, cluster's resources, and application developers. In order to substantiate the claim the first version of a cluster operating system managing parallelism and offering SSI, called GENESIS, has been developed.

The need for monotone approximation of scattered data often arises in many problems of regression, when the monotonicity is semantically important. One such domain is fuzzy set theory, where membership functions and aggregation operators are order preserving. Least squares polynomial splines provide great flexbility when modeling non-linear functions, but may fail to be monotone. Linear restrictions on spline coefficients provide necessary and sufficient conditions for spline monotonicity. The basis for splines is selected in such a way that these restrictions take an especially simple form. The resulting non-negative least squares problem can be solved by a variety of standard proven techniques. Additional interpolation requirements can also be imposed in the same framework. The method is applied to fuzzy systems, where membership functions and aggregation operators are constructed from empirical data.

This article discusses a range of regression techniques specifically tailored to building aggregation operators from empirical data. These techniques identify optimal parameters of aggregation operators from various classes (triangular norms, uninorms, copulas, ordered weighted aggregation (OWA), generalized means, and compensatory and general aggregation operators), while allowing one to preserve specific properties such as commutativity or associativity. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Recent research efforts of parallel processing on non-dedicated clusters have focused on high execution performance, parallelism management, transparent access to resources, and making clusters easy to use. However, as a collection of independent computers used by multiple users, clusters are susceptible to failure. This paper shows the development of a coordinated checkpointing facility for the GENESIS cluster operating system. This facility was developed by exploiting existing operating system services. High performance and low overheads are achieved by allowing the processes of a parallel application to continue executing during the creation of checkpoints, while maintaining low demands on cluster resources by using coordinated checkpointing.

This paper treats the problem of fitting general aggregation operators with unfixed number of arguments to empirical data. We discuss methods applicable to associative operators (t-norms, t-conorms, uninorms and nullnorms), means and Choquet integral based operators with respect to a universal fuzzy measure. Special attention is paid to k-order additive symmetric fuzzy measures.

Job scheduling is a complex problem, yet it is fundamental to sustaining and improving the performance of parallel processing systems. In this paper, we address an on-line parallel job scheduling problem in heterogeneous multi-cluster computing systems. We propose a new space-sharing scheduling policy and show that it performs substantially better than the conventional policies.

Studies have shown that most of the computers in a non-dedicated cluster are often idle or lightly loaded. The underutilized computers in a non-dedicated cluster can be employed to execute parallel applications. The aim of this study is to learn how concurrent execution of a computation-bound and sequential applications influence their execution performance and cluster utilization. The result of the study has demonstrated that a computation-bound parallel application benefits from load balancing, and at the same time sequential applications suffer only an insignificant slowdown of execution. Overall, the utilization of a non-dedicated cluster is improved.
