Polystyrene nanofibres were electrospun with the inclusion of cationic surfactants, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) or tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC), in the polymer solution. A small amount of cationic surfactant effectively stopped the formation of beaded fibres during the electrospinning. The cationic surfactants were also found to improve the solution conductivity, but had no effect on the viscosity. Only DTAB had an effect on the surface tension of the polymer solution, the surface tension decreasing slightly with an increase in the concentration of DTAB.

The formation of beaded fibres was attributed to an insufficient stretch of the filaments during the whipping of the jet, due to a low charge density. Adding the cationic surfactants improved the net charge density that enhanced the whipping instability. The jet was stretched under stronger charge repulsion and at a higher speed, resulting in an exhaustion of the bead structure. In addition, a polymer/surfactant interaction was found in the polystyrene–DTAB solution system, while this interaction was not found in the polystyrene–TBAC system. The polymer/surfactant interaction led to the formation of thinner fibres than those formed in the absence of the interaction.

The effects of a non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-405, on the electrospun fibres were also studied. The addition of Triton X-405 did not eliminate the fibre beads, but reduced the bead numbers and changed the morphology. Triton X-405 slightly improved the solution conductivity, and had a minor effect on the surface tension, but no effect on the viscosity.

The adsorption of DNA on the Langmuir film of a cationic surfactant, dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA·Br), and the change of the aggregation morphology of the composite monolayer with respect to surface pressure have been investigated by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). In contrast with the case of DODA·Br on pure water subphase, when DNA was dispersed into subphase, its adsorption to the interface monolayer through electrostatic interaction decreases the charge density and therefore promotes the formation of domain at low surface pressure. In addition, the electrostatic interaction changed the phase morphology of DODA·Br Langmuir monolayer under different surface pressure, that is, from flower-shaped crystalline domain on the pure water subphase to circular domain on the subphase dispersed with DNA. The result also shows that the monolayer of the composite at air/water interface under the high pressure is not homogeneous, but consists of incompletely fused domains. For the Langmuir film of the surfactant with shorter alkyl-chains, similar morphology can be observed both under the high and low surface pressure. But the tight-stacked circular domain is no longer observed.

Direct measurements of a long-range force between charged solid surfaces in a nonpolar liquid are presented for the first time. Measurements were made between mica surfaces in solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium di-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (AOT) at millimolar concentrations in n-decane using a surface force apparatus which has been modified to improve its sensitivity for detecting a weak and long-range force. Modifications include a magnetic drive system, the use of a weak cantilever spring with the apparatus mounted in a vertical configuration, and a detailed consideration of the interference optics to allow accurate measurements of surface separations up to several micrometers. The results show a repulsion that is well fitted by theoretical curves based on a model in which only counterions enter the calculation, in other words, in the absence of a reservoir of ions in the solvent. Fitting the theory to the data allows an estimate of the mica surface charge density of ∼1 mC/m2. A mechanism for surface charging of mica in this solution is proposed, which includes a role for trace amounts of water that are inevitably present and adsorbed surface aggregates of AOT. The relevance of the results to previously observed charge stabilization of colloids in nonaqueous solvents is discussed.

This paper proposes a ramp dual-pulse actuation-voltage waveform that reduces actuation-voltage shift in capacitive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches. The proposed waveform as well as two reported waveforms (dual pulse, and novel dual-pulse) are analyzed using equivalent-circuit and equation models. Based on the analysis outcome, the paper provides a clear understanding of trapped charge density in the dielectric. The results show that the proposed actuation-voltage waveform successfully reduces trapped charge and increases lifetime due to lowering of actuation-voltage shift. Using the proposed actuation-voltage waveform, the membrane reaches a steady state on the electrode faster.

Functionalized chitosan (CS) were widely used as drug delivery system in the chemotherapy of various disease. In this work, folate (FA) was conjugated into chitosan molecular as targeting ligand based on Schiff reaction between –NH2 group of CS and –COOH group of FA. And nanoparticles were made by emulsion method with vanillin novel cross-linking agent. The FA modified CS and its nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Zeta potential. SEM results confirmed the nanoparticles made from FA-CS conjugate were spherical in shape and were about 100 nm in size. Zeta potential analysis revealed that the nanoparticles were negatively charged with charge density of -7.73mV.

Hydrophilic and chemically reactive porous media were prepared by adsorbing functional polymers at the surface of sintered polyethylene membranes. Modification of the membrane was accomplished by first exposing the membrane to an oxygen glow discharge gas plasma to introduce an electrostatic charge at the membrane surfaces. Cationic polyelectrolyte polyethylenimine (PEI) was adsorbed from solution to the anionic-charged surface to form an adsorbed monolayer. The adsorption of a second anionic polyelectrolyte onto the PEI layer allows further modification of the membrane surface to form a polyelectrolyte-bilayer complex. The conformation and stability of the adsorbed monolayers and bilayers comprising the modified surface are probed as a function of the polymer structure, charge density, and solubility. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, we demonstrate that the presence of the polyelectrolyte multilayers drastically increases the density and specificity of the functional groups at the surface, more than what can be achieved through the plasma modification alone. Also, using the wicking rate of deionized, distilled water through the porous membrane to gauge the interfacial energy of the modified surface, we show that the membrane wicking rate can be controlled by varying the chemistry of the adsorbing polyelectrolytes and, to a lesser extent, by adjusting the polarity or ionic strength of the polyelectrolyte solution.

Flaxseed protein isolate (FPI) was extracted from flaxseeds, and its amino acid composition and functional properties (solubility, thermal stability, emulsifying properties and electrostatic charge density, water holding and fat absorption capacities) were determined. The highest purity of FPI (90.6%) was achieved by extraction at 60°C. FPI had a low lysine to arginine ratio of 0.25, which is desired in heart-healthy foods and infant formulas. The denaturation temperature of FPI was 105°C. FPI had the highest emulsion activity index (375.51 m(2)/g), highest emulsion stability index (179.5 h) and zeta potential (-67.4 mV) when compared to those of other commonly used proteins, such as sodium caseinate (SC), whey protein isolate (WPI), gelatin (Gel) and soy protein isolate (SPI). The average emulsion droplet size of emulsions stabilized by these proteins was in the order SC

Conducting polymers prepared by a templated vapour phase polymerisation process involving solid phase transition metal complexes are found to produce polymers with charge carriers that exhibit maximum drift velocity in the range of 1 m/s. This super-mobility seems to be related to a high degree of ordering in the materials as evidenced by the X-ray diffraction data. This may result from a templated polymerisation process. The high mobility manifests itself as a capacity to sustain very high current densities (>10000 A/cm2); such high current densities are of importance in thin film conductor applications.

Zwitterions with a cyano group on the side chain (CZ) were synthesized. Although the addition of CZ caused a slightly negative effect on viscosity, ionic conductivity, limiting current density, and lithium transference number, the oxidation limit of PEGDME/lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (LiTFSA) composites was improved to over 5 V. For charge/discharge testing using Li|electrolyte|LiCoO2 cells, the cycle stability of PEGDME/LiTFSA with CZ in the voltage range of 3.0-4.6 V was much higher than that of PEGDME/LiTFSA. Incorporating a small mole fraction of CZ into PEGDME-based electrolytes prevented an increase in the interface resistance between the electrolyte and cathode with increasing numbers of the cycle.
