The thermal stability of electrochemically prepared polypyrrole (PPy) films with p-toluenesulfonate (pTS) or perchlorate (ClO4) counterion (PPy/pTS and PPy/ClO4) is improved by simple treatment with aqueous sulfuric acid, sodium sulfate or sodium bisulfate. The degree of stabilization achieved depends on the solution, temperature and duration of treatment. Although the mechanism for improved stability is not yet clear, it is apparent that the level of ion exchange and the original polymer microstructure are important. A model for the conductivity decay as a function of thickness has been proposed. The early stages of ion exchange are not symmetrical, and diffusion is facilitated at the electrode side of the film. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction shows no evidence of morphological change after treatment of PPy/pTS (43 μm), but in PPy/pTS (12 μm) and PPy/ClO4 (41 μm) films an additional peak is indicative of more ordered structure following treatment. The glass transition temperature, Tg, of PPy/pTS and PPy/ClO4 films obtained by modulated differential scanning calorimetry is approximately 155°C.

This paper investigates the friction and deformation-induced heating that occurs during the stamping of high strength sheet steels, under room temperature conditions. A thermo-mechanical finite element model of a typical plane strain stamping process was developed to understand the temperature conditions experienced within the die and blank material; and this was validated against experimental measurements. A high level of correlation was achieved between the finite element model and experimental data for a range of operating conditions and parameters. The model showed that the heat generated during realistic production conditions can result in high temperatures of up to 108 °C and 181 °C in the blank and die materials, respectively, for what was traditionally expected to be 'cold' forming conditions. It was identified that frictional heating was primarily responsible for the peak temperatures at the die surface, whilst the peak blank temperatures were caused by a combination of frictional and deformation induced heating. The results provide new insights into the local conditions within the blank and die, and are of direct relevance to sheet formability and tool wear performance during industrial stamping processes. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Nanocomposite electrolytes of a fully amorphous trifunctional polyether (3PEG) and poly- (methylene ethylene oxide) (PMEO) have been complexed with two lithium salts and nanoparticulate (~20 nm) fillers of TiO2 and Al2O3. Addition of the fillers to the polymer salt complexes shows a significant change in the conformational modes of both polymers, especially the D-LAM region between 200 and 400 cm-1, indicating a reduced segmental flexibility of the chain. These changes are more pronounced with the use of TiO2 than Al2O3. Incorporation of the nanoparticulate fillers to the electrolytes fails to influence the degree of ion association, suggesting that the number of charge carriers available for conduction in both polymers using both LiClO4 and LiCF3SO3 is not the source of any conductivity increase. Addition of the fillers, which was seen to increase the conductivity in PEO-based systems, generally lowers the conductivity in the present PMEO systems, while the addition of TiO2 has little or no effect except in the cases of 3PEG 1.5 and 1.25 mol/kg LiClO4. In this case, 10 wt % TiO2 provides a conductivity increase of half an order of magnitude at approximately 60 °C. We also report for the first time a Raman spectroscopy investigation into the PEO-based nanocomposite electrolytes. The present results are discussed in terms of the electrostatic interactions involving dielectric properties of the fillers, of special interest being the interactions between the polymer and the fillers and between the ionic species and the fillers, when the effect of crystallization can be ignored.

Food security is a significant issue in the remote, high altitude areas of Nepal. Malnutrition is common because the harsh climate restricts production and access to fresh food. Humla is a province in north-west Nepal where the severe weather conditions and limited arable land restrict the growing season of vegetables to only 4-5 months a year. Passive solar greenhouses are a technology that can be used to extend the growing period of vegetables. For the greenhouse to be effective in Humla, the design must be appropriate to the climatic conditions, available resources and the social requirements of the community. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a family-sized solar greenhouse proposed for Humla. Three solar greenhouses built in other high altitude areas have initially been reviewed to see what techniques might be replicated in Humla. The thermal performance of the proposed family-sized greenhouse has been predicted using the solar simulation software, TRNSYS, and compared against an existing design in the area. The proposed design was found to be superior and average night-time temperatures in the coldest month were predicted to be approximately 7°C higher. Overheating was controlled in the hottest month by shading and natural ventilation.

Single pass warm rolling and compression experiments were carried out from ambient to 800°C for ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel with ∼100 ppm carbon and interstitial free (IF) steels, both with two levels of silicon. Subsequently, annealing was done in order to recrystallize the deformed specimens. The main purpose of this study was to understand the effects of rolling temperature and silicon on stress responses and textures. This study comprises two main themes: flow stress and strain rate sensitivity during compression and shear banding and textures in warm rolled specimens. The effects of deformation temperature on in-grain shear bands were different between ULC-Si and IF-Si steels. As in previous work with more conventional steels, in-grain shear bands in the IF grade had low sensitivity to rolling temperature, while those in the ULC grade depended significantly on the deformation temperature. However, the temperature profile of shear banding in the ULC grade was approximately 150°C higher than in previous work. Deformation and recrystallisation textures for both IF and ULC grades depended on their rolling temperatures. The variation of both grain size and texture after annealing can be explained by the rise and fall of in-grain shear banding activity which is related to the strain rate sensitivity.

This study investigated the effect of water deprivation on the expression of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and natriuretic peptide receptor B (NPR-B) mRNA, and the ability of NPR-B to generate cGMP in the Spinifex Hopping mouse, Notomys alexis. This rodent is a native of central and western Australia that is well adapted to survive in arid environments. Initially, CNP and NPR-B cDNAs (partial for NPR-B) were cloned and sequenced, and were shown to have high homology with those of rat and mouse. RT-PCR analysis showed CNP mRNA expression in the kidney, proximal and distal colon and small intestine, whilst NPR-B mRNA expression was found in the kidney, proximal and distal colon and the atria. Using a semi-quantitative multiplex PCR technique, the expression of renal CNP and NPR-B mRNA was determined in 7- and 14-day water-deprived hopping mice, in parallel with control hopping mice (access to water). Water deprivation significantly decreased the relative levels of CNP and NPR-B mRNA expression in both the 7- and 14-day water-deprived hopping mice, when compared to control hopping mice. In contrast, the ability of CNP to stimulate cGMP production was significantly increased after 14 days of water deprivation. This study shows that alterations in the renal CNP/NPR-B system may be an important physiological adjustment when water is scarce.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) plays a role in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and chronic hepatitis C (CHC). The difference in the cytokine responses between hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections may have implications in the pathogenesis of these diseases. We performed a comparative study to examine the possible differences in the TNF-TNF receptor (TNFR) response between CHB and CHC. We studied the cytokine levels of 38 patients with CHB, 40 patients with CHC and 9 patients with dual hepatitis B and C, and compared them with the baseline levels of 12 healthy controls. The plasma levels of TNF-, interferon-, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-10 and soluble TNFR-1 and 2 (sTNFR-1 and 2) were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The expression of TNFR-1 and 2 in liver tissues was examined in 30 cases of CHB and 15 cases of CHC by semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that sTNFR-1 levels correlated with liver inflammation in all patients, whereas this correlation was not found with sTNFR-2 or other cytokines. Liver inflammation indicators were higher in HCV RNA+ than in HCV RNA– CHC. Most significantly, sTNFR-1 levels correlated with liver inflammation in CHB, but not in CHC. However, the expression of TNFR-1 and 2 in liver was similar between CHB and CHC. These findings suggest that the TNFR signal transduction pathway is modulated differently in HBV and HCV infection.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to determine the contribution of transfusion in the past to the risk of current infection with hepatitis B or C among patients attending a large hospital for endoscopic procedures.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood samples had been tested for hepatitis markers by routine methods. Patients completed a comprehensive risk factor questionnaire and results were analyzed using computer software.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven percent of the 2120 participants in the study received transfusions in the past. There was no increase in prevalence of hepatitis B among those transfused. Compared with nontransfused participants, recipients of blood before the implementation of hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening in 1990 had a 4.6-fold increased risk of HCV infection, whereas those transfused with screened blood had a 3-fold increased risk. The difference between the odds ratios for patients before and after screening was not significant.
<b>CONCLUSIONS: Because screening has almost completely eliminated HCV from the blood supply, our finding of a continuing association of HCV infection with transfusion was unexpected. It implies that there are significant other nosocomial risks for hepatitis C transmission associated with the clinical situations where patients received blood. These should be actively investigated.

This thesis is an ethnographic investigation of a Catholic Brothers school, Christian Brothers College (C.B.C.), in the provincial city of Newburyport, Australia* The study explores the traditions and historical purposes of education at the independent, religious school, and examines the manner in which these have changed or are changing. All names, including the name of the school and the city, have been altered to preserve anonymity. The opening section discusses the emergence of the theoretical problem of the dialectic of change and continuity in the ongoing activity of C.B.C. actors. This is followed by an argument that an understanding of such activity requires an ethnographic perspective. Such a perspective, however, must not overlook the organisational and structural constraints within which participants operate. Hence, a critical ethnography, which takes account of both the agency of human actors and the structures which influence their activity, is advocated as the most suitable approach for understanding continuity and change within a complex organisation in its social context. This argument is followed by an ethnographic account of Christian Brothers College, which focuses on the perceptions and activities of teachers and administrators, Individual chapters deal with the Christian Brothers Order and its educational mission at C.B.C.; the nature of religious education at the school; the administration of the school; approaches to control and discipline; the curriculum and evaluation of pupils; and the relationship between C.B.C. and the wider Newburyport community. The concluding section integrates an analysis of continuity and change at C.B.C. with a discussion of theoretical perspectives on reproduction and transformation. The thesis concludes that, although change has occurred in many ways, an institutionalised image of C.B.C. as 'Brothers’ school'persists and impedes the formation of more democratic authority relations, curriculum, and evaluation. The potential for such change, however, is seen most strongly in the ongoing reform of religious education.

Hepatology and gastroenterology services are increasingly utilising the skills and experience of nurse practitioners and nurse specialists to help meet the increasing demand for health care. A new nurse-led assessment clinic has been established in the liver clinic at Geelong Hospital to utilise the expertise of nurses to assess and triage new patients and streamline their pathway through the health care system. The aim of this study is to quantitatively assess the first two years of operation of the nurse assessment clinic at Geelong Hospital, and to assess advantages and disadvantages of the nurse-led clinic. Data was extracted retrospectively from clinical records of new patients at the liver clinic. Quarterly one-month periods were recorded over two-years. Patients were categorised according to the path via which they saw a physician, including missed and rescheduled appointments. The number of appointments, the waiting time from referral to appointments and the number of ‘did-not-attend’ occasions were analysed before and after the institution of the nurse-led assessment clinic. The Mann-Whitney rank sum test of ordinal data was used to generate median wait times. There was shown to be a statistically significant longer waiting time for physician appointment if seen by the nurse first. The difference in waiting time was 10 days. However, there was also a reduction in the number of missed appointments at the subsequent physician clinic. Other advantages have also been identified including effective triage of patients, and organisation of appropriate investigations from the initial nurse assessment.
