Using the volatile memory of other computers within a system to store checkpoints is an alternative to the traditional approach of using stable storage. The objective of this study is to develop a storage mechanism using at-least-k delivery semantics. This semantics allows data to be saved to a minimum number of computers simultaneously using group communications, without requiring that each group computer successfully acknowledge the receipt. The new storage mechanism is implemented in the GENESIS checkpointing facility v2.0. The results showed that at-least-k storage mechanisms provide low storage latency times; however, the incurred execution overheads on the applications executing within the system are higher than that when using remote stable storage to store checkpoints.

The application of the graphitic anode is restricted by its low theoretical specific capacity of 372 mA h g(-1). Higher capacity can be achieved in the graphitic anode by modifying its structure, but the detailed storage mechanism is still not clear. In this work, the mechanism of the lithium storage in a disordered graphitic structure has been systematically studied. It is found that the enhanced capacity of the distorted graphitic structure does not come from lithium-intercalation, but through a capacitive process, which depends on the disordering degree and the porous structure.

The successful commercialization of smart wearable garments is hindered by the lack of fully integrated carbon-based energy storage devices into smart wearables. Since electrodes are the active components that determine the performance of energy storage systems, it is important to rationally design and engineer hierarchical architectures atboth the nano- and macroscale that can enjoy all of the necessary requirements for a perfect electrode. Here we demonstrate a large-scale flexible fabrication of highly porous high-performance multifunctional graphene oxide (GO) and rGO fibers and yarns by taking advantage of the intrinsic soft self-assembly behavior of ultralarge graphene oxide liquid crystalline dispersions. The produced yarns, which are the only practical form of these architectures for real-life device applications, were found to be mechanically robust (Young's modulus in excess of 29 GPa) and exhibited high native electrical conductivity (2508 ± 632 S m(-1)) and exceptionally high specific surface area (2605 m(2) g(-1) before reduction and 2210 m(2) g(-1) after reduction). Furthermore, the highly porous nature of these architectures enabled us to translate the superior electrochemical properties of individual graphene sheets into practical everyday use devices with complex geometrical architectures. The as-prepared final architectures exhibited an open network structure with a continuous ion transport network, resulting in unrivaled charge storage capacity (409 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) and rate capability (56 F g(-1) at 100 A g(-1)) while maintaining their strong flexible nature.

With the expected theoretical capacity of 2596 mA h g-1, phosphorus is considered to be the highest capacity anode material for sodium-ion batteries and one of the most attractive anode materials for lithium-ion systems. This work presents a comprehensive study of phosphorus-carbon nanocomposite anodes for both lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. The composite electrodes are able to display high initial capacities of approximately 1700 and 1300 mA h g-1 in lithium and sodium half-cells, respectively, when the cells are tested within a larger potential windows of 2.0-0.01 V vs. Li/Li+ and Na/Na+. The level of demonstrated capacity is underpinned by the storage mechanism, based on the transformation of phosphorus to Li3P phase for lithium cells and an incomplete transformation to Na3P phase for sodium cells. The capacity deteriorates upon cycling, which is shown to originate from disintegration of electrodes and their delamination from current collectors by post-cycling ex situ electron microscopy. Stable cyclic performance at the level of ∼700 and ∼350-400 mA h g-1 can be achieved if the potential windows are restricted to 2.0-0.67 V vs. Li/Li+ for lithium and 2-0.33 vs. Na/Na+ for sodium half-cells. The results are critically discussed in light of existing literature reports

Liquid plasma, produced by nanosecond pulses, provides an efficient and simple way to fabricate a nanocomposite architecture of Co3O4/CNTs from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and clusters of Co3O4 nanoparticles in deionized water. The crucial feature of the composite's structure is that Co3O4 nanoparticle clusters are uniformly dispersed and anchored to CNT networks in which Co3O4 guarantees high electrochemical reactivity towards sodium, and CNTs provide conductivity and stabilize the anode structure. We demonstrated that the Co3O4/CNT nanocomposite is capable of delivering a stable and high capacity of 403 mA h g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles where the sodium uptake/extract is confirmed in the way of reversible conversion reaction by adopting ex situ techniques. The rate capability of the composite is significantly improved and its reversible capacity is measured to be 212 mA h g(-1) at 1.6 A g(-1) and 190 mA h g(-1) at 3.2 A g(-1), respectively. Due to the simple synthesis technique with high electrochemical performance, Co3O4/CNT nanocomposites have great potential as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Leaf material from nine Ni hyperaccumulating species was collected in New Caledonia: Homalium kanaliense (Vieill.) Briq., Casearia silvana Schltr, Geissois hirsuta Brongn. & Gris, Hybanthus austrocaledonicusSeem, Psychotria douarrei (G. Beauvis.) Däniker, Pycnandra acuminata (Pierre ex Baill.) Swenson & Munzinger (syn Sebertia acuminata Pierre ex Baill.), Geissois pruinosa Brongn. & Gris, Homalium deplanchei (Viell) Warb. and Geissois bradfordii (H.C. Hopkins). The elemental concentration was determined by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and from these results it was foundthat the species contained Ni concentrations from to 250–28,000 mg/kg dry mass. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS)-based metabolite profiling was then used to analyse leaves of each species. The aim of this study was to target Ni-binding ligands through correlation analysis of the metabolite levels and leaf Ni concentration. Approximately 258 compounds were detected in each sample. As has been observed before, a correlation was found between the citric acid and Ni concentrations in the leaves for all species collected. However, the strongest Ni accumulator, P. douarrei, has been found to contain particularly high concentrations of malonic acid, suggesting an additional storage mechanism for Ni. A size exclusion chromatography separation protocol for the separation of Ni-complexes in P. acuminata sap was also applied to aqueous leaf extracts of each species. A number of metabolites were identified in complexes with Ni including Ni-malonate from P. douarrei. Furthermore, the levels for some metabolites were found to correlate with the leaf Ni concentration. These data show that Ni ions can be bound by a range of small molecules in Ni hyperaccumulation in plants.

High conductivity in solid-state electrolytes is a critical requirement for many advanced energy and other electrochemical applications. Plastic crystalline materials have shown promise in this regard, and the inclusion of nanosized inorganic particles in both amorphous and crystalline materials has indicated order of magnitude enhancements in ion transport induced by space charge or other defect enhancement. In this paper we present conductivity enhancements in the plastic crystal N,N‘-ethylmethylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C2mpyr][NTf2]) induced by nanosized SiO2 particles. The addition of the nanoparticles dramatically increases plasticity and ion mobility. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements indicate an increase in mean defect size and defect concentration as a result of nanoparticle inclusion. The scaling of the conductivity with size suggests that a “trivial space charge” effect is operable, although a strain induced enhancement of defects (in particular extended defects) is also likely given the observed increase in plasticity.

Ambient temperature sodium batteries hold the promise of a new generation of high energy density, low-cost energy storage technologies. Particularly challenging in sodium electrochemistry is achieving high stability at high charge/discharge rates. We report here mixtures of inorganic/organic cation fluorosulfonamide (FSI) ionic liquids that exhibit unexpectedly high Na+ transference numbers due to a structural diffusion mechanism not previously observed in this type of electrolyte. The electrolyte can therefore support high current density cycling of sodium. We investigate the effect of NaFSI salt concentration in methylpropylpyrrolidinium (C3mpyr) FSI ionic liquid (IL) on the reversible plating and dissolution of sodium metal, both on a copper electrode and in a symmetric Na/Na metal cell. NaFSI is highly soluble in the IL allowing the preparation of mixtures that contain very high Na contents, greater than 3.2 mol/kg (50 mol %) at room temperature. Despite the fact that overall ion diffusivity decreases substantially with increasing alkali salt concentration, we have found that these high Na+ content electrolytes can support higher current densities (1 mA/cm2) and greater stability upon continued cycling. EIS measurements indicate that the interfacial impedance is decreased in the high concentration systems, which provides for a particularly low-resistance solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in faster charge transfer at the interface. Na+ transference numbers determined by the Bruce-Vincent method increased substantially with increasing NaFSI content, approaching >0.3 at the saturation concentration limit which may explain the improved performance. NMR spectroscopy, PFG diffusion measurements, and molecular dynamics simulations reveal a changeover to a facile structural diffusion mechanism for sodium ion transport at high concentrations in these electrolytes.

This paper presents the control and charge management strategy of a photovoltaic system (PV) with plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) as energy storage. The hybrid energy storage system (HESS) of PHEV consists of battery and supercapacitor. A simulation model for the PV system with PHEV energy storage has been developed using Matlab/SimpowerSystems. The system consists of PV arrays, SEPIC dc-dc converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT), hybrid battery-supercapacitor energy storage with bidirectional dc-dc converter and inverter for grid connection. A charge management algorithm for the hybrid energy storage system is proposed to control the power flows among the PV system, energy storage and the grid. Results show that the proposed power management algorithm can control the power flows in an efficient manner.

In this paper, we propose a two-factor data security protection mechanism with factor revocability for cloud storage system. Our system allows a sender to send an encrypted message to a receiver through a cloud storage server. The sender only needs to know the identity of the receiver but no other information (such as its public key or its certificate). The receiver needs to possess two things in order to decrypt the ciphertext. The first thing is his/her secret key stored in the computer. The second thing is a unique personal security device which connects to the computer. It is impossible to decrypt the ciphertext without either piece. More importantly, once the security device is stolen or lost, this device is revoked. It cannot be used to decrypt any ciphertext. This can be done by the cloud server which will immediately execute some algorithms to change the existing ciphertext to be un-decryptable by this device. This process is completely transparent to the sender. Furthermore, the cloud server cannot decrypt any ciphertext at any time. The security and efficiency analysis show that our system is not only secure but also practical.

This paper describes aspects of a study that was conducted to determine women's needs for information related to laparoscopy for endometriosis. Sixty-one women attended focus groups, during which they described endometriosis as a disease of multiple losses: of relationships, of career and of a sense of self-worth. The women indicated that the pathway to diagnosis and treatment had been long and unnecessarily difficult. Many women said that they had reached a point where they decided enough was enough: the medical merry-go-round had to finish. They had to become assertive, take control and decide for themselves how they were going to manage their disease and their quality of life. For all but one woman in the study, complementary therapies were vital. For some women, alternative therapies had replaced allopathic medicine completely. Complementary/alternative therapies were a mechanism for regaining control.

We consider the privatization of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) of which markets can be opened to competition once privatization takes place and competitors can compete successfully against them in a few years. The currently used "Revenue Maximization (RM)" scheme maximizes the government revenue from privatization but does not provide incentives for the privatized SOE to charge a price lower than the monopoly price until competition arises. We propose the "Welfare Maximization (WMY scheme, which induces the privatized SOE to charge a competitive price without resorting to regulation. Also, WM provides greater incentives for post-privatization cost reduction.

Ultralong SnS2 nanobelts with a high production yield up to _98% were synthesized via a gram-scale and template-free solvothermal route. The synthetic mechanism of these intriguing ultralong nanobelts was proposed to be from the synergetic effect of the layered CdI2-type structure of SnS2 and surfacemodification of the capping reagent dodecanethiol. The resulting SnS2 nanobelts showed a high specific capacity of 640 mA h g_1 and stable cycling ability (560 mA h g_1 after 50 cycles), which is much better than a graphite anode.

The charging of an undivided cerium–zinc redox battery by various current waveforms some of which mimic the output of renewable energy (solar, wind, tidal, biofuel burning) to electricity transducers is considered in this work, where the battery operates through diffusion-only conditions, and is discharged galvanostatically. Under reasonable assumption, the mathematical model developed enables the observation that the performance characteristic of the cells charged with a constant power input differentiates between the various current–charge waveforms, with cell geometry and electrode kinetics playing subtle, but significant, roles; in particular, high efficiency is observed for sunlight-charged batteries which are thin and suffer no corrosion of the sacrificial electrode, and which have already experienced a charge–discharge cycle. The performance characteristics of the systems are interpreted in the light of consequences for smart grid realisation, and indicate that, for a constant power input, the most matched renewable is biofuel burning with a current output that linearly increases with time.

The present study examined the acute effects of metformin on fatty acid (FA) metabolism in oxidative soleus (SOL) and glycolytic epitrochlearis (EPT) rodent muscle. SOL and EPT were incubated for either 30 or 180 min in the absence or presence of 2 mM metformin and with or without insulin (10 mU/ml). Metformin did not alter basal FA metabolism but countered the effects of insulin on FA oxidation and incorporation into triacylglyerol (TAG). Specifically, metformin prevented the insulin-induced suppression of FA oxidation in SOL but did not alter FA incorporation into lipid pools. In contrast, in EPT metformin blunted the incorporation of FA into TAG when insulin was present but did not alter FA oxidation. In SOL, metformin resulted in a 50% increase in AMP-activated protein kinase α2 activity and prevented the insulin-induced increase in malonyl-CoA content. In both fiber types, basal and insulin-stimulated glucose oxidation were not significantly altered by metformin. All effects were similar regardless of whether they were measured after 30 or 180 min. Because increased muscle lipid storage and impaired FA oxidation have been associated with insulin resistance in this tissue, the ability of metformin to reverse these abnormalities in muscle FA metabolism may be a part of the mechanism by which metformin improves glucose clearance and insulin sensitivity. The present data also suggest that increased glucose clearance is not due to its enhanced subsequent oxidation. Additional studies are warranted to determine whether chronic metformin treatment has similar effects on muscle FA metabolism.
